Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

If you got past your negativity towards me, you’ll find I’m quite a funny fellow, everyone tells me so

The point is bigfooty has whipping boys and makes a lot of s**t up through silly half assed observations to suit narratives. Crouch was clearly the answer and was in front of Nicks the entire time and Nicks refused outright to play him. That is a galling selection blunder from a coach. He clearly thought we could win despite consistently losing the CBA's. I just dont understand how the Happy Clappers are fine with this.
I'd like to see a new Mid Field coach to inject some freshness. Between Laird, Crouch, Dawson (AA's) and Rachele, Pedlar, Rankine (very high draft picks), and Soligo, Berry and a broken down warhorse (Sloane), we have a good mix of talent, experience and potential. Also a good mix of inside and outside skills. This should always be reviewed and refreshed but so should the coaching.

I have no issue with Van Berlo but surely some of the Crouch "discovery" is as much an error from him as the head coach. Without any justification to say it, I feel Van Berlo has already peaked in his capability as Mid Field coach. Yet we have further growth required as a mid field. Like the players, we should look for elite where we can.

Just curious to see peoples general thoughts.. had we made the Finals in 2023, where close to nobody had thought so preseason, would anyone be upset if the club extends Nick’s contract now?

Technically, we did make the Finals if it weren’t for some umpiring howlers in at least 2-3 games in the dying stages.

Yes.

Only one part of coaching is win/loss and sometimes you can get lucky. Look, we played well.

I just dont see the harm in taking an extra precaution on how he is tracking next year. He is contracted. Dont see the rush.

The good judges look a little deeper. The greatest risk to our next flag was putting all our eggs in the quickest rise basket and ignoring our weakest component. Which happens to be the most important aspect. We go into 2024 a 6th to 10th side with a starting midfield group that Crouch, Laird & Sloane are the 3 of the primary 4. And when push comes to shove, we know Keays is next in. The kids are bit part players.

From First Crack… these figures show us we are definitely on the improve. Exciting times ahead, and I also think Nicks is the one to take us forward. You don’t reach these stats if you are a s**t coach with a s**t list.View attachment 1791962
Take Tex out of the picture and what would those stats look like.

Take any top player out of any team.. what a ridiculous statement.
I don't think so in this case. Those stats are good, but you are attributing them to Nicks's coaching. We had some really good performances, but Tex was the main reason we won some of those games. Take one game we played the Bulldogs without Tex. We were creamed. Tex is the general in our forward line.

Sorry, but what does this say?
We have the 4th ranked core midfield unit?

Seemingly. Given we were in a position to win probably 19 of our 23 games this year, a couple of unlucky results and probably 4-5 games where the major reason for the loss was not kicking straight - it does suggest our midfield are generally good.

our midfield has always competed well in terms of stats. Where we're no good is the damage we inflict with our possession verse what the oppo midfield is doing to us.

Disagree with that this year. I think our “worst” as a midfield was what stood out. Playing well and then giving up 5,7,9 straight goals and not able to stop it

With Dawson, Soligo, Schoenberg, Rachele and Pedlar through there at times with Milera, Hinge and Smith running through from the back half our midfield was pretty good. It was the goal runs (and our goalkicking) that killed us

Winning a final would be nice but a stretch.

I have heard plenty of ex coaches say the biggest jump up the ladder is getting into the top 8. Plenty have done what Nicksy has done so far but the hard part is about to come.
