Anyone think we're going to do anything notable on the trade front this year?

I can't see it. We'll have no retirements to free-up dollars and list spots. We also have very few uncontracted/frustrated players wanting out, other than perhaps Fin Macrae and Bianco, neither of whom I imagine would attract a pick much lower than about 40.

So I reckon we'll do very little this year and will set ourselves to be bigger players in 2024, when perhaps someone light Naughton could be gettable.

Any alternative views?
Very little in 2023. Shuffling of rookies, 1 or 2 low value trades if guys want to leave for opportunity (Ruscoe?), propably only 2 or 3 draft picks used.

Joint AFL-AFLW CBA 2024-2029 being negotiated now;
2024 will hopefully see list sizes increased back to pre covid;
2024 will have retirements;
"AFL clubs' salary caps and hard caps are also set to undergo increases";
2024 draft is looking deeper (at this stage);

Question: we have to delist/ retire how many players each year, also is there a minmum number of draftees we are a obligtated to draft each year?

The way the list is we are one over with Markov. We could elevate Begg and Johnson and only bring in one player through the ND. We would have to delist 3 but then could re-rookie one of those. So the minimum delistings/retirees is 2 plus Wilson as a Cat B.

I don't really know anything about him, but a bloke who can play tall and small in defence would be handy. I've got a feeling that Jezza might retire.

Honestly if we win the flag this year, it might be wise for a bunch of them to call it a day

Interest in Buku Khamis? I know some posters on here like him.
41 goals in 18 games in the VFL is a good effort.
Where does he fit? We already have AJ, Kreuger and Reef all vying for that medium/tall marking forward spot, and I’m not sure he’s superior, or even as good as any of those 3.

Perhaps as the club's media manager - plenty of clicks guaranteed at least
I’m sure he has a good handle on concussion protocols and what should be done in the event of any Tribunal cases that may arise.

from what Ive been told a few days back, They view is that Ryan, Allan, Reef and Macrae have potential to be in our top 15 players going forward, so unless someone pops up that would be in our top 15, we wont be active as previously thought.
Wright doesn't want to bring in list cloggers at the risk of losing our genuinely talented kids.

2024 is the one where we'll be more active.

In case of emergency, break glass and allege a conspiracy

At VFL level he seems to be better than all of them, doesn't he?

He can also realistically play defence, as he has done often at reserve level. I think with the injury concerns that we seem to have in the three guys you've listed, we can afford to have another depth player there. Especially if he can help out down back too. I'm not clamouring for him, but I think there's room.

We don't have list spots to be able to add more forward depth.
Buku is 191cm and 23 turning 24 early next year.

I would back 194cm Reef, soon to be 21, in to be a better forward at the same age.
AJ has already shown he has a higher ceiling and is contracted.
Kreuger is 196cm, +5cm on Buku, and can play back and pinch hit in the ruck.
Begg is also on the list.

We need to be looking for either best 22 players or developing players to replace our 30+ year olds.

I agree on Reef.

Why does Johnson have a higher ceiling than Khamis? He is older than him, and I would say both are fairly similar in terms of physical tools.
Kreuger is taller, but his rucking is no better than Khamis' & he has less recent backline experience than Khamis does.
Begg is on the list, but not sure how he factors in. Khamis definitely more promising than he is.

I could see both Reef & Buku battling it out to try and develop into Elliott's hybrid role of a lead-up forward who applies pressure when it hits the deck.

AJ 1.5 goals per game, Buku 0.6.

The dogs have been crying out for a KPD all year but Buku was played forward.

Begg factors in because we don't have list spots. If Buku came in Begg or Krueger would have to go out. If not them then a mid like Carmi / Draper / Etc.

A player who has played exclusively as a forward kicks more goals than one who has played 50/50 forward and back, you're right.

Beveridge's failings are not Buku's. Do we hold Sam Darcy purely at fault for his disappointing season too?

I would happily let Begg go for Buku personally. I think Steene is the better prospect than Begg, who has failed to impress me almost weekly.

If Macrae is ever in our best 15 we’re in trouble! That’s not about where I rate him, but more about where the list stands. He’ll be behind the other 3 next year plus the best 23 from last Thursday. Then there’s Naicos and Noble which automatically puts him around 28-30 on the list (I have no idea where he stands v Frampton and AJ my guess is behind them). I don’t see him becoming a regular for at least 18 months unless we cop injuries and if he’s not a regular this time next year he’ll be gone.

I reckon if we win the flag we should go full tilt at winning it again and again. I reckon we manage the retirees at 2 a year or thereabouts. I think we can work our way to adding two a year and still being good

Reefs going to have a j daicos style break out season next year. His form in the vfl towards the end of the year was excellent, was playing well above the lvl. Overhead marking and goal kicking were particularly good
