Another day of Melbourne in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Players are responsible for their own actions, but I would be asking questions of Goodwin too. I was one who last year was defending him when all the stories of his shenanigans were coming out, with the simple defence of, "It hasn't effected the team's success."

It's hard not to ponder if that is no longer the case. Their arrogance as a team that's been evident to all has led them to underperform in straight sets exits two years in a row. The Finn Maginness thing was embarrassing. Not selecting Grundy in finals seemed to be out of a mixture of spite and stubbornness, all in favour of a dud player (who ironically has just tested positive to cocaine, so shouldn't have been playing in the finals anyway.) One of their greatest ever players in Oliver doesn't seem to be doing all that well off the field. Kysaiah Pickett is turning into one of the worst snipers going around. Now a positive drug test.

To be honest if you took Gawn, Petracca & May out, they would barely even be a top 8 side let alone a top 4 team.

They just seem like a team that have too many things going on besides performing on-field. If the stories about Goodwin are even half-true, then it's no surprise. The fish rots from the head.

The Smith suspension is an interesting one regardless of what sanction WADA hand down. Melbourne should dump him the first chance possible if his game preparation is to get on the snorting powder a couple of days before a game.
The stupidity of this is that outside the WADA window of testing it gets swept up under the three strikes rules as recreational usage.
I would think with the WADA testing they have now is even more sensitive than previously and players who thought coke might be out of their system in a day or so are now at a serious risk of getting caught similar to Shayna Jack.
Playing devils advocate here but if WADA think that coke is performance enhancing then if it's being used during the week then why isn't it being tested for by the AFL as it could increase training loads and performance ?
I am no prude about drugs but players are getting a free pass with the three strikes policy and maybe Smith has got complacent with his usage and now is looking at a significant suspension and or the end of his footy career.
Potentially it could have been a matter of half a day earlier and he would have been clean and then worst case scenario he could have got a strike and the club would have not known.
But now he's down s##t creek without a paddle and he's given the club every right to dump him.

About Joel Smith, why has this information been made public? Normally when players are caught taking illicit drugs it is not made public (unless they are caught by police and charged/fined e.g. Michael Talia). Is it because cocaine is an exception and considered performance enhancing? Somehow I doubt it otherwise we would have heard about other instances with players caught taking cocaine. Did someone rat him out? What's the deal? Bit harsh on him when most players get to deal with this type of malfeasance behind closed doors.

About trade period, why do media tend to rate highest the clubs who are most active during trade period? Are they not able to recognise that sometimes the best strategy for a list is to sit tight (for whatever reasons)? This was kind of the case with us in some recent seasons. Is it a cynical reward to clubs for helping them to generate traffic and clicks and to incentivise them to do it more in future (this seems too long a bow, but I can't be sure).

Team does nothing isn't a catchy title.

Interesting listening to Gettable tonight. Twomey was waffling about how good clubs were getting better by trading and mentioned Pies and Dee's. Beveridge in a very small voice mentioned us with Grundy and Twomey just huffed. No doubt who is the big dog but good on you Riley!
Yeah, we're not Cal's favourite that's for sure. Mostly because when it comes to draft time we give him nothing.

It’s during the season that he tested positive so it’s a bigger breach than if he tested positive during the off season.
