I like Hugh, I think he is a good AA level player (on a wing) but I wouldn't be keen to sell the farm for him. Having said that, Dockers supporters would've said the same thing about Neale in 2018. Hugh doesn't have the same runs on the board at roughly the same age as Lachie did but he isn't a million miles away from that either.

dlanod it is January 2024, maybe you are mixing up the years. Year 2022 to 2023 was that increase of around $1.3 million.
Sorry, I should've used season rather than year, i.e. the cap went up this season just past, and it's going up for next season (the one this year). I can see that leading to confusion.
Then only $530K increase for seasons 2026 & 2027.
$530k for 2026, only $142k for 2027. Though it's also likely they'll sign a new CBA and move up that cap total before it becomes relevant.
You mentioned that Hugh usually signs in February?
I recalled he tends to sign relatively late so looked it up. Last time it was announced in mid-Feb, and before that it was late December. There's not really a "usually" because he's only signed two contract extensions (drafted in 2016, re-signed December 2017 for three years, re-signed February 2021 for three years).
I posed a question in another post about deadline for contracts in the current season.
Do you or anyone else know if Hugh could sign in February and include an increase for this year being 2024?
If we can do this by increasing his salary this year (2024) and by a fair bit more again in 2025 when that big increase is due.
Hugh might be happy with that deal.
You can. Collingwood players re-did their contracts for the coming season to bring in Beams back in 2018, so bumping a player's salary would work under the same logic.

In my opinion, The Gabba rebuild and future playing venue questions come into play. I don't think more years should be a priority for Hugh at this stage. Once that is settled each party at least knows where the playing ground will be for the years ahead.

The main thing about Hugh McCluggage is he is playing for the Lions in 2024
I'm not sure how much the redevelopment will really affect players that have been around a while but I guess it's wait and see.

A mill a year would make him one of if not the highest earner at the club. Very interesting… hopefully he can go up another level to justify that salary. First step is kicking more goals.

He has finished top 3 in the BnF for the past 5 years. Definitely deserving of being the top guy

Oh boy!!

If he has kept up his running ability, he certainly will make a difference physically his year.

Anyone know who the strong looking dude with tatts in pic 1875...the one after Fletch getting his jumper stretched?
He must be a new VFL player that i don't recognize.
Mr Ripper probably knows who the player is.

It is not any of the new draftees or Brandon Ryan.

Think it might be ex-Footscray lad Ewan MacPherson. But don’t quote me.

Can’t wait for the proper training guernseys with numbers.

Great photos Mr Ripper - many thanks!
As an aside, is this the fittest looking Rayner has ever been in a pre-season?
I reckon the preseason he did his knee, he came back in this type of nick. Looked set to break out that year after his preseason form and then as we know, did the knee in the last praccy game and that was all she wrote for the season. Let's hope for some better luck this year, because I agree, he looks primed now body wise to have a bigger impact & he is one that we would be banking on to do so, to hopefully get us across that last step.
