Marshall isnt the reason our midfield clearance work is poor, he creates a contest in the ruck the rest is up to the mids. Our midfield simpy couldnt win first hands on the ball, they were generally too stationary and cant read the ball drop and as a result are way too slow to react. A dominant tap ruckman would help, but all the opposition mids do then is work off your ruckman.

I must say after watching the Essendon game, I am not convinced anything has changed and we need to address it quickly.

Agreed, our guys need to get on the move more.

I think we need to accept what we have with Marshall. He's elite in a lot of areas.

Ideally we'd have a ruck forward who is a decent tap ruckman and can take a decent mark/crash a contest as well, but they aren't super common.

My biggest issue is if Marshall goes down, we are left with a 32 year old Campbell. That's where a ruck forward would come in handy.

Very left field suggestion but how would Doogs go as a pinch hitting ruck? Would obviously disrupt the match ups down back but he has the height at 199cm.

Lycett's form was awful as well.

Would rather play Campbell.

A pretty strong argument could be made that Campbell is a better forward than Lycett too.

Meanwhile West Coast were trying to coax Lycett out of retirement late last year.
They are close to the bone now, with Flynn injured.

Teams have won premierships recently being poor at clearance differential (more lost than won).

Yep and those teams had elite intercepting defenders. We have Wilkie who his opponents try to keep away from contests. He wins one on ones but cant help out his team mates as much as he used to.

Winnng clearances is a lot more pro active than attempting to win it back in defence.

Yep, they have but we probably need to work on the quality of clearance if we are going down that road.

Richmond used to lose clearance but their quality of clearance was always high.

Agree the Tigers in their sucessful years would have had one of the highest winning clearance to scoring rates.

How many burgers you have to flip to afford that?
A lot George.....a hell of a lot !!!!!!

After my stock market guidance this morning....I reckon I could afford to buy the front gate.......and that would be a push !!!!

Max gawn is very good at playing as a moving defensive wall.

I think marshall would be great at this with his size, speed and endurance.

If I had my way- I'd have marshall basically taking the centre square rucking- and then have him prowling around defensive wing to halfback all day.
Basically positioning himself in the same general areas as sinclair.

Tell him that his job is to:
1. Do all the ruckwork up to half-forward.
(Max and Owens take forward 50 ruck)
2. Repel attacks from kick coming from our half back line and set us up on the counter.

His role is likely to shift to more of this if we continue to play three tall forward in King, Sharman and Membrey. You won’t see Roma inside 50 with those guys there, which may allow him to play longer as he’s not covering quite so much ground.

Paddy Dow on his way to the DFC said to a fan that he had just been for a long run and everything was 'on the up and moving forward ahead of expected'. No time frame, could have just been footy speak to say nothing.

The benefit of a ruckman that doesn't spend much time forward is that when they do, they don't usually have an opponent of their size.

We do.

But Lyon and Co are building step by step a better team and one that will we hope become a contender. This is is not just a one or two year project, but each year we are getting better.

Keeler is one possibilty to complement Marshall.

Maybe Heath, but only if he can develop a better tank.

I am sure that Lyon and Co will also be looking at other avenues.

Goldstein wasn’t spoken too about coming here to play a depth role.

Lycett wasn’t asked to move interstate for similar.

They were spoken to about forming a duo with Marshall
Would you think 2 rucks is about a successor plan primarily or is there a tactical reasoning?
