Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

A losing dna. You're probably right, smith and sloane will be wheeled out ala Scott Thompson until it gets to the point of ridiculousness when they must be dropped.

Scott Thompson played only one game in 2017, round 16 vs Bulldogs.

He was obviously told end of 2016 that he wasn’t getting a game in the Seniors unless we had injuries.

Have we the gonads to do that with Sloane and Smith?

Has Smith been in the leadership group before or is this is first time?

Has Nicks taken any responsibility for our 0-3 start?

I listened to his presser last night, there was plenty about players being out of form, making poor decisions and not sticking to game plans, but not anything about how the coaching staff can improve or what they're learning from the losses.

If Nicks is patting himself on the back and thinking it's all the players fault then we're going nowhere.
You pick poorly skilled players that have a history of not executing under pressure then lament the fact they don't execute under pressure.

Not only do you pick these players but you celebrate them as leaders.

This ain't the players fault.

Probably agreed to after the final game last year.

Wouldn't surprise me if he had a trigger for an extension if he made Finals in either of the last two years.

Club honoured it in good faith after Hoskin funked up.

Wait a sec, you can’t then assume Sydney would lose to Melbourne in the final round. Sydney didn’t have to win against Melbourne to make finals last year because of what happened in our game.

If Sydney had lost to us, they may have beaten Melbourne in Sydney when their season was actually on the line.

If the club did it on this basis then people need to lose their jobs.

Listened to the press conference again and it is all on the players not executing etc, nothing on him.

Such a panicky decision to bring Tex back when he clearly isn't right.

We lost Round 1 and Thilthorpe was out. Tex's fitness becomes irrelevant to us. Panic Button = Pushed.

Now we've flown him to and from Perth with a 6 day break in front of us.

I’m still dumbfounded when we decided to extend his contract.

So we do it after a close loss but really never in it until the last quarter.

As all have said, his contract extension had been done and dusted in the preseason. If it had already been decided it needed to be done during the preseason. And this talk about putting undue pressure on him to perform if it hadn’t been announced, well, welcome to the big league fella. You want finals then suck it up.

Now the administration just looks stupid. But hey, they have been down that road before.

It does beggar belief, but what were they waiting for? And to admit they did it because they couldn’t handle external noise, that’s a new low. And we’ve plumbed some serious depths the last 15 years.

Without him our forward line can’t function. Connection has been orders of magnitude better the last 2 games.

It’s quite amazing that the ultimate irony has played out over these last 10 years at this football club, in 2014 Ricciuto came in thinking of himself as some sort of White Knight saviour figure and to save the club he had to viciously sack Sanderson, yet 5 years later he goes on to hire Brenton Sanderson 2.0.

Nicks & Sanderson are essentially the exact same coach with the exact same beliefs and flaws, the only difference is Sanderson had Dean Bailey to pretty much coach the team in 2012 to that prelim, as soon as Bailey was suspended and he actually had to coach himself he was just as much out of his depth as Nicks has been.

It was only because Sanderson had much better personnel in the midfield & down back that helped the team get over the line in some games over that 2013-2014 period otherwise we would’ve seen the same results Nicks has gotten.

It really sums up Ricciuto’s tenure over the past 10 years, he goes from saying one of those coaches is the source of everything that’s wrong with a football club and then says 10 years later the other is doing a good job and blindly backs him with a contract extension. Just gives jobs to people he likes and is just a bullish narcissist that talks-down to people whilst also being a total hypocrite with every decision he makes at the football club.

Nicks is so lucky that West Coast exist which prevents us from finishing last again.
Will be interesting to see at which point they go ahead of us, they’ve at least drafted some midfielders

Worked under hinkley most of his coaching career. Name would have been crossed off the list immediately. Wouldn't ask him for a 2nd interview. Would have given him one just to be polite

Why else sign him so early this season?

Goal decision is correct we played Finals, Nicks extended. We honour that even though we dudnt qualify because of the mistake.

Or

We re-sign him on the back of preseaon form and a happy vibe around the club in February
Announce it after losing Round 1.

Either way, poor decision.

Should have waited till at least Round 15/16ish.

Signing a coach early to reduce presssure has to up there with the dumbest things the club has said in a while.

I don't necessarily think changing coaches makes a huge difference for this year or the next, but I would be sweeping the broom through the recruiting department and bolstering player development like crazy.

Yes it's a Kane Cornes segment, but facts are facts. We have won precisely nine games away in Matthew Nicks' entire tenure, with the highest-ranked team we beat ranked 10th.

And this year we've gone from the highest-scoring team to the lowest. Our only real strength (and it was a big one) is gone, and our weaknesses enhanced like Scorpus said.

It reminds me of the worst latter days under Pyke, when every score looked like an inefficient, pushing shit uphill struggle.

I'm wondering how many of those games were at oppo actual home grounds too. Hawks in TAS and Dogs in Ballarat account for 2 of the 9.

And even some of those road wins need added context. The Carlton one was at Carrara and the St Kilda game was at Cazaly's (neither of these are their home grounds), and '22 North, '22 WCE and '23 WCE had a combined total of 7 wins out of 67 games.

We haven't won an away game against a team starting the round in the top 8 since Round 8 2019.

That Hawks one last year we pulled out of our arse as well

It’s ****ing unbelievable. How the **** did they think this was a good idea? So there would be noise, who cares? I’d rather noise than have signed up a dud.

Graeme Cornes on this topic was unbearable. “It’s exactly why we signed him, can you imagine if we were 0-3 and hadn’t signed him”

Um yeah I can, I’d be thinking thank **** we haven’t signed him yet.

“Rowey did you expect our start to be any better? Gold Coast, Geelong, Freo, did you really expect to beat Geelong?”

Rowey “yeah I did, we beat all those teams last year and we beat Geelong at home”
