Discussion on Footy Confidential about Cam Mooney's conflict of interest in being GWS Forwards coach and taking part in coach interviews as part of Fox coverage of GWS-Giants game.

Agree entirely. But not unprecedented.

How is this different to Mark Ricciuto's dual role as Crows' Football Director and commenting Crows (and Port) games? IIRC Ricciuto did try and enter Port changerooms at half time during a showdown a few years back and was refused entry?

An area of the commentary/coverage that needs cleaning up.

Remember the beat up when a few clubs banned Daisy Peace?

Typically, you don’t let the opposition into your rooms.

At very least, it’s $2M of income. Which is probably only cost them $150k in stickers, postage and wages.
Yes, clever marketing.

Helps if the name of your club/team is the Tassie Devils and your legal fight with Disney Corp to be able to use that name gets global media coverage, despite it being a unique indigenous marsupial from your own backyard.

And I'll go out on a limb here and say that a sticker for a Tassie Devil mascot is a bit more marketable globally than a dyna-jaw, mega-head mascot in teal called Thunda Powa.

The AFL is strongly considering granting Sydney and GWS Giants a cost of living allowance, with the Harbour City ranked second to Hong Kong as the world’s most unaffordable.
Because it is attractive to invest and live in.

They always ignore that part.

Who's list? They didn't make the top 10 in the Economist's Intelligence Unit top 10 when they did their survey between last August and September.

1. Singapore (tie)
1. Zurich, Switzerland (tie)
3. New York City (tie)
3. Geneva, Switzerland (tie)
5. Hong Kong
6. Los Angeles
7. Paris, France
8. Copenhagen, Denmark (tie)
8. Tel Aviv (tie)
10. San Francisco

Yes, Sydney is expensive to live in (I have first hand experience) but I don’t think either Sydney or GWS are struggling in terms of player retention and both are in the 8.

GWS lost a few when the natural rebalancing of their list occurred following their early days. The biggest names Sydney has really lost recently is Dawson, not to mention that they brought in Grundy.

Sounds like one of those club responses to the “equalisation debate”.

If they are serious about it though, a flat compensation amount, paid by the AFL that decreases as salary increases should be the go (it’s only really the Rookies that are significantly affected).

It should be external to the salary cap so Sydney can’t just bank it and land the next Buddy Franklin.

Edit: just found the article on Code. Sounds like it’s more connected to football soft cap than player wages. Makes sense given the average assistant coach wage is only $120k

On second thoughts…. If a COLA is on the cards….

The non-Victorian clubs should get a disturbance allowance. Every time they jump on plane over a set amount (say 5 rounds, as that’s the amount of travel Collingwood does), they should get extra money.

It might ease the pain in the west.

Gosh Sydney & GWS are really struggling at the moment, reintroducing COLA really should be a priority again.

And if their other advantage - Academy players - are disadvantaged any way by having to "pay" more in terms of draft picks for players, let's make sure we fiddle with the Father/Son rule as well.

Unbelievable.

I don't get the cost of living thing. Unless you index it for every team in the competition (ie Sydney teams would have the highest spend, Adelaide teams the lowest spend) then it's just more league sponsored manipulation.

Also, aren't the Sydney teams both perennial contenders? Doesn't seem to be hurting them.

It's a bit like the Perth teams asking for extra home games to make up for the travel. Last time I checked the WA teams have 4 flags between them as compared to 3 for SA, 3 for Queensland and 2 for NSW. So whatever impact the extra travel has obviously isn't too bad compared to their equivalents outside of Victoria.

Perth housing is cheaper than Adelaide ($734k v $700k average) so WA should have a cut in salary cap.

The AFL don't want to be seen as a comp that only the Vic's win (too much).

They also want to expand in Sydney.

So levelling the playing field slightly but only for Northern states teams makes sense.

Levelling the playing field how exactly?

More lucrative opportunities already exist outside footy in Brisbane/Sydney so why do they then need a COLA?

If anything, the Adelaide sides should be given an equalisation payment for the lack of outside revenue available.

Port Adelaide is unashamedly leading the charge on a national reserves competition and thinks it is a disgrace the AFL is not yet all in on the idea. They cannot believe the league would compromise the strength of the national game because of state league clubs.

Port also believes clubs should be forced to pay more for academy and father-son talent at the draft and are open to a mid-season trade period, though need more details on how it would work. The club is also strongly against priority picks and assistance packages for struggling clubs.

And for keeping your demanding girlfriend..

Despite emphasising that her relationship with Soldo remains solid, Chelsea admitted living in Adelaide “has been a struggle”.

“He had to move to Adelaide for his career and tbh it’s been a struggle for me. It [living in Adelaide] is just not for me permanently,” she said.

“Temporarily it’s fine. But long term in Aus I think Melbourne or Gold Coast are for me... maybe even Syd.”

When asked how Soldo was taking the news, Chelsea posted a photo of him standing dejectedly in the corner of a lift with the caption, “surprisingly taking it really well”.
Here’s to Chelsea.

Hawthorn’s 3rd point is interesting.

I also like how Collingwood is in favour of a second tier competition, as it reduces the burden on coaches, but Freo isn’t, as it increases burden on coaches…..

Giving Gil an 18 month farewell tour, who just regularly kicked the can down the road long before he called it quits, having a do nothing chair in Goyder, who will supposedly leave soon, just like he will supposedly leave soon from Qantas, but will do grand tours of both, having 2 lawyers in the 2 most important executive positions, who always have an eye on being sued, and the AFL more interested in winning Martin Luther King Jr awards than fixing problems is why the AFL doesn't give a stuff about making timely decisions, unless its about quick money in for them, or stopping money going out.

The boys on 360 discussed it tonight, after Kenny of all people gave the AFL a boot up the date on Monday night.
