Travelling on a plane for a couple of extra hours has to be one of the most overrated 'disadvantages' in sport. West Coast are the most successful non Victorian team in the comp (although Brisbane equaled them this year), certainly doesn't seem to have stopped them winning flags regularly.

Its not the 2 extra hours - its the accumulation of extra hours over 10, 12 even 15 years.

There is a reason why there are only 3 WA based players who have played 300+ games in 30 odd seasons, and why so many others on the east coast who do a few 1 or 2 hour flights a year, have achieved the milestone.

Fremantle have 2 players in the top 22 for most games played in the history of the comp. Their number of 300 gamers is the same as Port in a similar time frame.

The Eagles only having 1 with 10 more years is a slight anomaly but I wouldn't call that rock solid evidence that the travel is a huge burden, especially when most of the players from one of their great eras were cooked by drug use.

GREATER Western Sydney has delisted three players, including two who were penalised for their actions at the club's end-of-season function in September. Josh Fahey, Lachie Keeffe and Jacob Wehr have all been cut from the Giants' primary list but the club intends to re-draft all three at November's Telstra AFL Rookie Draft, to free up list spots to be filled at the national draft.

I liked Fahey in his draft year. Has a cannon for a left leg.

Wish clubs would poach more players when these types of delistings happen. Plenty of clubs could use Jack Gunston.

Politically its kind of a smart move for the kangas

if everytime theres a shit sandwitch to be eaten they eat it for the AFL, gives a reason for the AFL to keep them around.

lets the AFL throw the 2 WA clubs a bone.

a very small one but if the WA clubs push for more the AFL can point to it and fob them off as "Hey we're trying over here"
It’s the only time North Melbourne will play in front of a decent crowd!

Nah, I can’t see how say 48 hours PER YEAR more than the SA teams in first and business class spread over 6 months on a plane will have an affect that great.

American sports stars do more, play more games AND have longer careers.

More likely the drug taking and whoring.

Melbourne footballer Joel Smith has been slapped with a career-ending four-year ban for cocaine use and trafficking.
Smith, 28, tested positive to cocaine following a match at the MCG in August 2023.He was later hit with additional drug trafficking charges by Sport Integrity Australia investigators.
The huge ban is expected to be announced by the AFL and SIA on Friday.
At least four of Smith’s Melbourne teammates have been sweating on the outcome of the trafficking probe.
A text message from Smith uncovered by SIA – in which he told them he had obtained several grams of cocaine and asked if they were interested – is understood to have been sent to a group of star Demons players.
The Smith camp was initially hoping for a suspension of just three months before the trafficking allegations surfaced.
Smith had the option to contest his case at the AFL anti-doping tribunal but his father, former Melbourne high-flyer Shaun Smith, believed he was being pressured to stay silent and take the fall in a bid to contain a bigger scandal.
“It feels like my son is being manipulated into being the fall guy here, in order to protect the AFL brand,” Smith said in April. “He’s being made a scapegoat, and I’m really worried for him.”

NFL seasons are not that long, Basketball & Baseball are irrelevant it's cricket level fitness.

Might be time to stop calling it the rookie list.

I wonder when this just gets extended to 20 blokes on 40k a year and effectively becomes a top up player list under the AFL cap.

West Coast and Freo fly ~60,000km a season

The Dallas Stars will fly 91000km this season. Their most experienced player is 35 and has played over 1100 games (excluding playoffs) including playing in all 82 games in the last 3 seasons.

West Coast and Freo will be fine.

Clubs are bracing for the commercial impact of delayed free-to-air AFL coverage on Saturdays from next year as Fox Footy holds exclusive live broadcast rights of the game nationally for the first eight rounds. The AFL’s lucrative new broadcast deal starts in 2025 and runs for seven years, and it is having an impact on the schedule for next season, with the league working to release the fixture by mid-November.

The $4.5 billion broadcast deal has some restrictions on the number of games teams can play on Saturdays for the first eight rounds to share the load across the competition, but that desire to spread the number of games each team plays on a Saturday is also making the development of the fixture more complicated. Clubs want clarity from the league as to how it will affect them, and their fans. The deal means that supporters of teams playing anywhere in Australia on Saturday in the first eight rounds will need a Foxtel or Kayo subscription to watch them live, with free-to-air coverage on Seven to be delayed. Only the Anzac eve, Anzac Day and Dreamtime games will be shown live on free-to-air if they fall on a Saturday.

But for Victorian audiences, that arrangement lasts longer, and extends to the first 15 rounds before Seven can broadcast Saturday night games live. Seven has the rights to broadcast Thursday and Friday night matches, and Sunday afternoon games, and the overall number of free-to-air games broadcast will remain the same as they were under the previous agreement. Fox Footy will use dedicated commentary teams for each match. The Age spoke to four senior club officials, on the condition of anonymity as the 2025 fixture was not yet finalised, who said they were uncertain what impact delayed free-to-air games on Saturdays would have on their sponsors’ exposure, and the game’s growth in non-traditional markets. Although they accepted the commercial logic of “Super Saturday” and its role in securing the league’s record-breaking broadcast deal, they wanted information from the AFL as they sell membership packages and deal with member queries.

I'm not saying they won't be fine it's just american sport isn't the heights of fitness it's a nonsense comparison.

I remember 7 advertising that they would have live streaming of all games in 2025 during the finals this year. Or did I mishear that?

Tim Membrey is officially a Pie as of today.
