Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

Chad Warner
DOB: 19 May 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #39, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Willetton (WA)/Aquinas College (WA)/East Fremantle (WAFL)

You don't trade Chad a year early. The fact West Coast should be worse than Freo for 2025 will give us some leverage. Pay up Freo or he goes to his non preferred West Coast in the PSD.

Footy club: "Why yes, we would be interested in bringing in a great young player from our state"

Swans: "Keeping Chad is our priority"

Chads contract: "See you at the end of 2025"

Chad: "I want to win flags at the Swans"

Bigfooty: "Welp, guess he's gone!"
Also Chad:
'im happy for now'
'will think about the direction I want to go'
'still have time at the swans'

Not exact quotes but there's been a few choice words along those lines.

Jokes aside, that's fair, but I have to assume he's just reading from his manager's playbook on that one.
I don't think he's that bright lol. I rekn it's him slipping out exactly what he's thinking

Hope your right tho and it's just his manager steering him to generate interest and up the price. The only problem is other clubs are willing to pay a very very high price

You don't think he's that bright , wow we

Didn’t Hill request a trade to a Melbourne club 18 months ago “for family reasons” after his bout with ill-health? He’s probably got family in Perth too, but he seems like a restless (and quixotic) fellow.

Or has he decided he’s worth more than the Pies contracted him for, and reckons the Perth clubs can/will cough up?
He probably feels undervalued at Collingwood, and if he does, I agree. He's an absolute gun and should be paid accordingly. Not sure how tight the ourselves strings are at Collingwood, but Hill deserves a decent contract. Almost single handedly won them the GF last year.

I'd love to keep Warner, but I'm not overly concerned if he leaves. We have a great core unit, and if it's not Warner given the license to attack, we'll either find a replacement or we'll shuffle the magnets to cover his role with existing players.

How about this for a scenario, JMac in Warner's position and Campbell takes JMac's position on the wing. Not the worst alternative.

Warner looks great because we have Heeney, Gulden and Rowbottom supporting him. Put him in an underperforming midfield and you get 2023 Warner, not terrible, but nowhere near the force he is in 2024.

With all that said, I hope Warner re-signs and it's not at the inflated price bottom 4 sides are willing to pay.

Saw him last night at my watering hole, geez he's tiny , looked like he had a big minder with him , scary looking character tattoo's all over his cranium

Can't see Warner leaving. We'll throw almost as much cash at him as Freo or Eagles will be willing to.

Seems settled in Sydney, from all reports he loves it here. His family have all converted to big Swans fans too.

However it'll be a season of this......
If everyone shuts up it won't

Penrith Panthers and Melbourne Storm in the NRL provide the blue print for success despite losing players due to poaching by rivals and salary cap constraints. They have shed some out and out stars over the years but still have remained a premiership force by:
1) Maintaining their spine
2) Have an excellent coach
3) Well run club with excellent culture
4) Never ending production line of guys who can play their role and also guys who were previously role players becoming stars.
Now I'm not saying we offload Chad - I'd extend him now on big bucks if possible. But if he goes then so be it - we are a mature and successful club.

I agree with you but there comes a time where we can only afford so much. If you’re holding out it’s prob for a Freo or WC.
He still has 18 months to run on his current contract. With the rich run of form he's in it just makes business sense for him to ensure that his performances are being factored into the negotiations even if his intention is to ultimately stay. If he still has not signed late into 2025 then there's a solid chance he's going. Even so I wouldn't be too concerned if he keeps this form up because it'll maximise our chances of winning the 2024 and 2025 premierships.

Having said that if Freo / WC do come with a godfather offer, hypothetically, $14m over 8 years. I'm comfortable with the club letting Chad go instead of trying to compete with it. Chad's a rare talent, but he operates in a system that allows him to play to his strengths and be the superstar he currently is, we can't replace Chad but we can replace his role and maintain the same structure more or less.

If you want to build a premiership team, avoiding overpaying for individuals is crucial. If anything you need as many players overperforming their contract prices as possible.
