Good post.
People need to understand that despite the fact that we've supposedly been rebuilding for the best part of a decade, we are only really just beginning now. That sounds grim and it is, but at least we've got one of the greatest coaches of all time in charge and have managed to...
We broke even at the clearances, which sounds strange in a 100 point loss but in modern football isn't really that surprising because scoring is generally from turnovers. Our problem was they would win the ball back and work through our zone with ease. Not in that haphazard style the good teams...
I don't think it's that simple. The Roos/Lyon coaching model is in my view the best the game has seen. Roos took a club that hadn't won a flag since the 1930s, had relocated to Sydney and was largely irrelevant and created a culture of sustained success that remains 20 years later. He then set a...
It's boring listening to the interstate sides complaining about all the "home" games Victorian clubs get as if it's 60,000 West Coast fans getting their team over the line at Optus Stadium rather than just 2 local clubs playing in a neutral game at Marvel Stadium. The fixture is odd, but I'm not...
I agree that it's a bit disingenuous to use our relative age and experience as an excuse. There's more to it than that though. Anybody who has ever played a team sport would know the importance of stability. When you have been playing with the same group playing the same roles for years things...
We played far too loose in defence and once they started dominating the midfield it was only going to end one way.
Sure we could've made some changes and limited the damage, but to what end? We aren't playing finals this year. The most important thing right now is instilling a solid game plan...
Similar to us with Brad Scott, he's a serviceable coach but after a certain period without the ultimate success it can all get a bit stale.
The problem for Port Adelaide fans if they keep winning is the only AFL coach I can remember getting sacked after making finals had fallen out with his...
I'm not of the view that umpires are intentionally biased against particular sides. I think they go out there with good intentions, they can just get swept up in the narrative at times. For example the narrative of 60,000 feral West Coast fans at Optus Stadium, the narrative of Curnow and McKay...
Ultimately we've been done by the obvious threat of going in undersized against Curnow and McKay. It hasn't helped that the umpires have been looking to pay every small infringement against them.
I always thought Carlton were the obvious choice for the Good Friday game, but it wasn't practical on a yearly basis because Easter occasionally occurs in round 1 when they are otherwise engaged. Perhaps the AFL moving the season forward a week helps in this regard.
I mean it's a little bit cringe but not sure it's a crime as such.
The biggest issue with him is that he doesn't seem like a particularly nice guy. People can change and he wouldn't be the first young man to mature in this regard, but I really hope we are addressing his development as a human...
It really was a fine piece of coaching from Sam Mitchell. This is essentially the same side that went 1-20 against professional teams last year, just with one of the greatest coaches of all time in charge. The first 2 rounds showed what we are capable of with clear directions in place. What...
I agree as it relates to the circumstances of the past players. They willingly engaged in a contact sport knowing the general risks involved. Unless there was specific medical negligence, I don't see how the AFL could've provided them with a safer workplace at the time.
I don't think the same...
The AFL had a class action filed against it in the Supreme Court a couple of weeks ago on behalf of hundreds of former players. This isn't a rule of the week type of thing, this is something that they need to be seen to be eradicating from the game if for no other reason than to avoid legal...
As much as people don't like it, this was always going to be the outcome in the current climate. The AFL need to be seen to be doing everything they can to get this action out of the game. The fact that Day didn't suffer concussion merely reduces the punishment from a few games to one game. It's...
Obviously a different type of player, but he reminds me a lot of LDU when he first came in. You can tell that his mind is one step ahead of everyone else, he just needs to get a little bit more experience at the level and then we will start to see that pay dividends.
Fun fact, the last time we went 2-0 we only won 1 more game for the rest of the season.
Anyway, we went out there without one of our captains and one of the Brownlow favourites and Hawthorn decided they were going to play the complete opposite to how they have been playing for the last 12...
If they're serious about getting that action out of the game - which they are - he will get suspended. Thankfully Day got straight up so hopefully not too severe a punishment.
Was at the game and watched him very closely. His work rate was at a level I didn't think we would ever see from him. It was especially pleasing to see him doing all of the little pressure acts that you don't get a stat for. Sure he still had a few dodgy moments, but that's all part of the...
