    Bendigo FL discussion 2024

Why are Maryborough not looking at the North Central League? Yes travel every second week, but to warmer and better grounds than the Central Highlands. I would have thought this is next best option.......... Maryborough why has this not been in the discussion?

    Bendigo FL discussion 2024

I am not supporting this position, and have no insight to the Boards thinking. However, allowing the Country Clubs to fold definitely makes it easier to make it a Bendigo (only) focused league with maybe a White Hills and Marong entering the league. 8 Bendigo based clubs would work.

    Bendigo FL discussion 2024

With all the discussion about the ineptitude of the BFNL board what if their strategy is to allow Maryborough to fold and potentially have Castlemain leave? It seems to me that most of the grief / angst about the BFNL is from the Country Clubs - so if they go who is left is relatively happy...

    Bendigo FL discussion 2024

What if the league was 6 teams? 1. Sandhurst 2. Square 3. South 4. Eaglehawk 5. Stath 6. Flat 3 rounds through the year and would consolidate the best talent into the 6 teams? Would this work?

    Bendigo FL discussion 2024

If the AFL HQ took a step back and said their role was to grow all footy not simply create a program for the National Comp the they could consider 1. The dollars from the Pioneers (and all other TAC teams) could fund full scholarships to the top 5 players for each region to a Melbourne /...

    Bendigo FL discussion 2024

You can't compare Maryborough to Kyabrum, Rochy or Koroit as examples - these are all destination clubs that may have minor leagues around them but they are the go-to clubs for players, including local farmers as examples, who are the main stay of these clubs. Maryborough is not a destination...

I think Kavanagh played half-forward in 92 - at least in the finals. That team were scary good and scary..... played that finals series like they were possessed.

Harsh .... love the knowledge and references across Country Footy.... nothing else to say.

    Bendigo FL discussion 2023

While I agree with the view that playing 'major' league footy has changed Maryborough has seen at least 3 local players from Carisbrook and Natte go to play 'major' league footy in Ballarat. When Maryborough was strong these players would traditionally come in to play there.... not sure MCDFNL...

    Bendigo FL discussion 2023

The problem for Maryborough and Castlemaine (more in previous years) if they don't differentiate themselves from their local competing clubs they could become less relevant. At least playing in a league the next level up provides a standard jump if local players want it. Unfortunately, locals...

    Bendigo FL discussion 2023

Generally agree with the points, but the question remains How do you fix the competitive imbalance in the Bendigo league - Everyone posts (and generally agrees) that the top 4 for the next 20 years will be Sandhurst, Square, Strath and Eaglehawk (assuming Gisborne end up in Riddell league one day).
  13. T

    Bendigo FL discussion 2023

The starting point has to be an agreement that Bendigo, Loddon Valley, Heathcote and Maryborough / Castlemaine leagues are completely farked with their competition imbalances - something has to be done ..... Einstein's definition of insanity. 1. Create a new Bendigo / Ballarat Super League 2...

    Bendigo FL discussion 2023

I have posted this before but the long-term answer for the Bendigo League is to join with Ballarat League teams.. The new comp would be Sandhurst Seniors Golden Square Seniors Strathfieldsaye Seniors Eaglehawk Seniors South Bendigo Seniors Sebastopol Seniors North Ballarat Seniors Redan Seniors...

    Bendigo FL discussion 2023

Lots of comments about mergers which is IMO is way off the mark. Putting 2 fat ugly chicks / blokes together does not make a good looking person. 1. Castlemaine and Maryborough need a $200k a year salary cap "grant from AFL HQ" to stay in BFL. They then might be able to attract local and...

    Bendigo FL discussion 2022

Totally agree ... a great year of improvement and if everything, and I mean everything went right, they might sneak into 5th over the next few seasons. After that back to the bottom. Maine, Maryborough and Flat need to leave the comp. Where to, I am not sure. But the next 20 years looks bleak...

    Bendigo FL discussion 2022

So many great comments over the last 24 hours but I don't know why the blame is at AFL Vic and AFL CV. It is the leaders at clubland that are the problem, selfishly focused on their single team and not the health of the competition. No one blames Cricket Victoria for White Hills and Epson...

    Bendigo FL discussion 2022

It's not just about population growth but also socio-economic (aka Money). Strath is not only a growth area but an affluent area with lots of money and business/sponsorship connections. If it was just population growth Flat would be dominating the BFNL with growth in their area.

Ha Darryl Wilson has a great record but if you think he would be the difference you haven't been reading any of this thread. Has he ever coached a bottom of the ladder team....... a serious question.

    Bendigo FL discussion 2022

Agree Stax......The points system stops clubs "buying" one-off Premierships, but does nothing to create long term equalisation. From Albury to Strath to Kyabrum strong clubs have junior pathways that provide high quality 1 point players, and this combined with excellent club cultures results...

    Bendigo FL discussion 2022

We know the answer to this by looking at the National Comp. If it was just standard it would be reduced back to 8 teams. Most footy supporters loved the Melbourne and Bulldogs GF and that has only been achieved by the National Competition being the most constrained competition on the planet with...

    Bendigo FL discussion 2022

Bart, unfortunately, the problem with the league is systemic. If you look at the top 4 under 18 teams from this season being 1 Gisborne, 2 Strath, 3 Square and 4 Sandhurst they can afford to lose a lot of players every year and still be the dominant teams. This has been the case for over 10...

    2021 Bendigo Football League

Huge signing. It's not the players in the district league that will make the difference, but the A grade locals that return from higher leagues (or other Bendigo clubs). Two or three players equivalent to Henderson will then create momentum for other MCDFNL players to have a crack at Maine. A...

    2021 Bendigo Football League

Probably need a new thread on mergers but a few comments 1. There is no Bealiba in Natte- Bealiba - they used to play games and train at Bealiba in the 90s, but it is now all Natte - not a criticism, just the reality 2. Most mergers are in reality takeovers - few support 2 grounds for home games...

    2021 Bendigo Football League

Trent - It is only my opinion but I hate mergers, not because of the new team, but because small towns need football and netball teams. No football team for Dunolly, Talbot, Inglewood, Heathcote etc will kill the town. Again IMO there are potentially new players in these towns that would play if...

    2021 Bendigo Football League

GG - the issue I, and many others post about, is much more than Castlemaine. IMO it's Maryborough, Flat, Campbells Creek, Dunolly, Rovers, Bushy, Inglewood, Leithy, Heathcote and I could keep going with the Central Highland and the Ballarat league. Again IMO mergers of a few teams will not solve...

    2021 Bendigo Football League

Mergers never, ever, never work. From AFL to local footy I don't know one merger where both teams end up as equal partners. Why would Harcourt merge with anyone? Creek and Maine would be still a shite team. Dunolly and Talbot... are you serious. No more than 5 players from Rovers and Bushy...

    2021 Bendigo Football League

Hi RDFL, It all depends on which games you drank cans on the hill for and would you also do the same if you lived in Maryborough, the Maine of Flat. Attached are you teams results this year 1 Gisborne 13.13-91 v Strathfieldsaye 12.18-90 2 Golden Square 12.12-84 v Gisborne 10.12-72 3...

    2021 Bendigo Football League

Totally agree Bouncer. I love your comment that it's CV that needs an overhaul. If you compared CV to the QAFL teams in the QAFL travel from Plam beach to Noosa - 3 hours and over 250km - with more than 5 Divisions A combined Bendigo / Ballarat top tier of 10 or 12 teams then 4 or 5 Divisions...

    2021 Bendigo Football League

Lots of issues here. 1. The best sides in Bendigo are definitely better than the best sides in the the GV 2. GV is a more even comp - so why would any team leave it 3. The only future for then Bendigo comp is to merge with the Ballarat Comp. What a great comp it would be with the 5 best from...
