Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

Chad Warner
DOB: 19 May 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #39, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Willetton (WA)/Aquinas College (WA)/East Fremantle (WAFL)

warner has an uncanny 360-degree awareness, to the extent he can actually move backwards with the ball to give himself a moment's extra time and space while aware of opposition around him, and he seems to instinctively know which opponents he's quick enough to outrun ... all in those split seconds in congested play, which suggests he has a great footy brain
add that to his obvious skills, his toughness, his balance and his workrate!
his development has been remarkable

I think that is one of his strengths that confuses a lot of his opponents. Most midfielders will burrow or barge in to a pack to try to get the ball and hope their momentum propels them through, but many times Warner grabs the ball and steps out of the pack backwards in the way he entered. This leaves lots of opponents grasping at thin air as well as ensuring that he has a clear exit. He does it too many times for it to be an accident, although it is probably instinctive for him.

Still shaking my head at him being pick 39.
The way he has developed and is now playing, he'd be considered a great pick up if he'd have gone top 10.

IIRC at the time he was considered a fairly limited inside mid. Our guys saw stuff that others didn't. That's one of the things about drafting kids at 18. The change from there to 21 can be enormous. Sometimes it's very little. You can't know at the time, you can only use your experience and judgement.

Beatson said they didn't expect him to be as fast as he is. He had a growth spurt after we recruited him and he gained a lot of speed after he was drafted

I can't remember a Swan as exciting as Chad since Goodes

i understand that call, but ... gulden, mcdonald, blakey, mcinerney, et al (geez, i get excited watching the mccartin brothers in defence!) ...
give it time, this really could be a period we're all looking back on in years to come as a golden age for the club ... there will be premierships
i said it last year ... this is the most exciting swans group in a generation
but there's no doubt warner is the shining light at the moment

warner is an absolute jet. Damian Barrett came out and said hes a future brownlow winner. Hope he doesnt put the mozz on him.

Also agree that theres lots of exciting kids. Gulden could be the best of the lot and we havent seen enough of campbell. Campbell i think was a mid but in classic horse fashion, he wont actually play there. I sometimes wonder if Mills would have been a top echelon midfielder years ago if he wasnt used as a defender but maybe its his time in defense that makes him so good now. will never know.

I think we need to cool our jets on Campbell for a while. I agree that he is classy, however through juniors he never got as much of the ball as you would want. This usually transfers across to AFL where the same scenario often plays out, so to expect Campbell to be thrown into the mids and get high numbers may be a path to disappointment.
I think the coaching staff are trying to find the best position for a classy kick who doesn't historically get a lot of the ball, so we need to be patient until they find it.

give him time, he's up with the other young blokes ... might need to strengthen up a bit but is all class with the ball

mills still improving, don't worry about that
just turned 25, he's a key part of our engine room for another decade with a bit of luck
classic hard-nosed swans mid
the younger blokes, the excitement machines, will work around him and others ...
wouldn't surprise me if several other clubs asked to sit out the next five years or so, knowing we'll be racking up flag after flag in that period

Forget Buddy. Give his $ to Chad. We don't need Dusty either, we've got the next one.

Yeah, was literally coming to say this.

We have a player who could definitely be a Dusty like player on our list...

I know everyone is talking about his pace and burst, but his fend/push-offs to avoid being tackled are insane.

Remember hearing another player talk about him bench pressing 110kg, and you can see his strength getting away from the tackler.

Also, his tackle in the dying play of the game was IMMENSE.
