Absolute shitmen, slow as a wet week, yeah he's got a great football brain. Just a pity his body cannot match that.
List clogger, not suited to the modern game.

And that's the truth, wish I was wrong but I aint.
look out this board loves a plodder that tries hard and has "good footy IQ" but doesn’t actually excel at football

then they wonder why we aren’t successful lol

If he was as ‘slow’ as you all say he is he wouldn’t be told by AFL accredited professional coaches to use his speed.

I think you need to start putting disclaimers at the start of your posts to make sure people aren't confusing your opinion with the info you hear from the waterboys grandmas sisters boyfriends dog, because this is a poor take from you.

I thought the point of an online forum was to discuss this type of thing, yes at times it can controversial and that should also be encouraged. But abusing posters never ends well.

I would've thought the same would apply to abusing our own players (i.e. calling them 'shitmen')

This is fair enough…but why don’t you follow the same advice with respect to the players? The kid is 19 years old and he might or mightn’t make it. Either way, he’s achieved way or than you or I have at AFL level and deserves some respect.

But nah, a “shitmen”.

Anyone who thinks Mahoney and Weightman are playing the same role is certified football illiterate. Weightman would have been flat out leaving the 50 all night, while Mahoney was repeatedly working up to a half back flank and a wing. The fact is that he is not a small forward, he's not being asked to play that role, and judging him as though he is, is disingenuous and lazy

Fair points you have made, so where is his best position and what type of player is he?

I dont think he really needs a position per say just do what he is doing Noble is loving him. The time of players playing in their nominated position are well and truly over anyway. To answer your 2nd question a very handy player doing everything asked of him time and time again.

I think his best position is wing/HFF. That seems to be where he starts in games and that's where he does his best work. He's a linkman, he works hard to get to creative spots and he delivers inside 50

can we get a "Certified Football Illiterate" badge for you-know-who's profile?

Yeah I tend to agree, but Jesus he is slow. And that doesn't work well for his future. We've 6 best 22 out currently and should they have been available he wouldn't get a game.

He is playing a higher half forward role, does some defensive cover to the wings and gets involved across just forward of the wing to give some link play. Had some great positioning today around some contests. Conversely Weightman is a jumping jack who plays out of the square. Good lead, jump, straight kick.

Just because they are similar in height doesnt mean they are the same.

He'd still get a game. His nous and ability to hold the play up when seemingly beaten is something we lack. And is valuable. And some of his handballs tonight were sublime.

I don't understand how people think he's slow. Is it just because he's being compared to small forwards who are stereotypically quite fast paced and agile? Not being quite fast isn't the same as being slow.

Do people just mean "slow for his height"?

I have no qualms about his pace considering half his game is based around being on his hands and knees handballing out of the contest.

Lomas i too once wore the rose coloured glasses, I took them off and noticed we're 18th. Something has to give and yeah maybe he could fight it out with 7 others for the medical sub role.

And yes Mahony isn't our biggest concern, i do see that.

Like zurhaar he is building into the year. I couldn't see it at first but there is a bit to like.

Sticks tackles
Quick hands
Gets stuck in
Provides an option
Runs his arse off to get out the back on the break

When his fitness builds i definitely see him as a caleb daniel type that always wants the ball and doesn't shy away from it despite his physical limitations. Can't ask for much more than that when so many of our players don't seem to want the ball and the pressure involved with holding it.

I don't think that rose coloured glasses apply to Mahony. He isn't elite, but plays his role beyond his years.

I'm just sick of the double standard for a 19 year old. When Will Phillips, LDU, Tarryn, Curtis, even Larkey or Zurhaar have a bad game it's rightly pointed out that they're still young and improvement will come. Mahony never gets that same benefit of the doubt despite consistently playing his role and doing plenty of good things.
