It doesn't matter how much these feebs mess with the rules, LT's accidental slide in the wet when the ball changed direction will never be against the spirit of the game. Had the ball not changed direction, Lindsay may well have slid head first, with his head colliding with Rohan's planted foot, still breaking his leg but possibly cracking Lindsay's skull. Then we would have the absurd situation of Lindsay being reported for sliding and causing serious injury under some duty of care bullcrap (Adrian Anderson's moronic clarification does not specify feet first), and Rohan being reported for making high contact. Both would be reckless and high impact.

Speaking of rules, what happened to the rule about runners getting in the way?

Every time I watch a bit of footy on TV there's some runner scurrying out of the way or ducking while a pass clears his head by inches. Last year the umpires would charge in and pay a free or give someone 50 metres as soon as the runner got anywhere near the play.

This year - nada.

MRP softens on sliding

THE MATCH Review Panel will no longer lay rough conduct charges for players sliding into contests in the manner that has seen Greg Broughton and Lindsay Thomas cited in recent weeks.

Fremantle's Broughton last week successfully challenged a rough conduct offence after he clashed with Gold Coast's David Swallow. Two weeks earlier, Thomas was charged with a similar offence that left Swan Gary Rohan with a broken leg. He also challenged successfully.

Match review panel chairman Mark Fraser said the Thomas and Broughton tribunal findings had changed the MRP's view of what constitutes rough conduct.

"Obviously the tribunal decisions with the two incidents will change our thinking a little bit because the tribunal didn't believe that was rough conduct," Fraser told AFL.com.au.

"Every case is different and we've had previous cases this year with people sliding in that have been cited and have gone to the tribunal and been found guilty. We just take every case on its merits and decide whether it's rough conduct or not."

But he said that if the Thomas or Broughton cases had emerged from now onwards, they would not have been cited.

"In the current climate similar incidents probably would not be referred," he said.
