Big bodied mid more like big bodied half forward flanker
(sigh)how many flankers have we got on this ship?

Natural inside mid. Just needs to play there!
Exactly. He will be a very good player for you guys.
We had too many playing that role in the end, but I'm still p1$$ed with us for giving him away for zero return and not playing in that role before Hewett, Cerra and the like arrived. Just terrible foresight.

Nice to see a player in the midfield wear a tackle instead of avoid it, certainly helps the other midfielders find space
The point of difference

An EFC player Absorbing pressure…..It took me a while to understand what I was seeing….it’s been so long!
Setterfield and Perkins are both good at that.
They should fill the midfield gaps we've had for the past 6 years since Jobe left.

Give it half a season, but the addition of Setterfield and the transition of Perkins should set us up nicely.
Hopefully Tsatas gets back and gets to build momentum with the group as well.

On the basis of that half he’s our most important player by an almost unfathomable distance
3rd time is definitely looking the charm for him.

Half yes, half the other components of our midfield are so contact anaemic they will all get out of his way and let him do what he does best which is embrace contact and fight for the ball.

I was concerned this guy didn’t have what it takes because he hadn’t established himself at the two previous clubs but biggest worry was that he wasn’t going to be playing there (inside big bodied mid) after where he was put at his previous clubs and where we put guys like Hibberd. He doesn’t have to be Patrick Cripps or Jobe Watson but just play that role where he absorbs contact and stops other teams from walking it out of the middle.

In - setterfield. Has to play permanently on ball. If shiel and parish want to pick and choose when they put their body on the line, shoot them out of the rotation.
or a cannon.

still maintain there is room for one of them in our midfield. or neither.

Draper Merrett Hobbs
Martin Setterfield Tsatas
that would do me for a starting midfield.
rotate Perkins & Caldwell on the ball, Durham, Davey and Langford thru the wings.

Setterfield at the very least straightens the midfield out. Since we can't/won't recruit these types, the least we could do is pinch the depth from other clubs.

Its going back a bit, but i seem to recall he was 2nd or 3rd on my list for pick 1. i was happy to drop a bid and see what happens.
It wasn't so much that he was the best of the bunch, but with Merrett and Parish already in the side, he (and Taranto & Clug) were the perfect compliments to them.
Whilst i didn't mind McGrath as a defensive, tough running addition, hindsight shows he won't make it into the middle and adds to the logjam on the back flanks....albeit jumps ahead in the queue.

He has that tenacity to stand up in congestion and help create the space to feed the ball out to.
Perkins is similar but without the core midfield craft, which i hope he developes. Setter & Perkins in the middle could be quite the duo alongside Merrett/Hobbs.

Don't see Perkins as a mainstay mid at all. Doesn't get enough of it IMO

See him as a floating high forward, like Langers natural role.

Main Midfield rotations for mine: Hobbs, Caldwell, Parish, Setterfield, Merrett, Shiel & Tsatas(when ready)

Stop gap mids if needed (5 min max) Langford, Stringer, Perkins, McGrath, Tippa, Snelling

i imagine you're right. And i should reserve a little judgement on Parish and Shiel until i see what Scott can do with them.
But in my mind, for us to compete we need to change up the balance from ball hunting accumulators (Merrett, Parish, Shiel) to competitive types (Setterfield, Hobbs, ?).

Perkins is wait and see for me. He has some tools to be a midfielder, but not the core craft. That could be his point of difference if he learns some 101 basics. Perhaps not an elite mid, but someone who provides Xfactor, whilst Setters, Hobbs, Merrett do the core craft stuff.

I'd view Perkins as a bit of a 50/50 rotation. Not always on ball, but more on ball than he has been.

Stringer i don't believe we'll see doing more than 2-3 CBA cameo's anymore. TBH, it's getting to the point we can barely rely on him forward, let alone doing what he did in 2021. So Perkins needs to step in.

McGrath is a pass from me in the middle. He doesn't have the head for it.

I think you are right with Stringer. Perk could get into the role better and get more minutes but I think his goalkicking could be much more valuable, esp with Setterfield onboard, but yeah he has that x factor.

Out of Parish & Shiel, Shiel is the biggest worry for me. Still needs more consistency. Parish looked quite hungry in the GC game so hoping last week was the "don't get injured before round 1" week. Seems he wasn't alone accross the whole comp but thought he might have wanted to impress the new coach! Frustrating as his best is elite.

Mcgrath in emergency only.

It was an indictment on our midfield the Setterfield was best of the lot, but could be a massive addition imo.

Thought Merrett was fine, 7 clearances and 400m gained plus equal leading tackler.

Parish & Shiel were poor though. Setterfield definitely has a spot there to make his own.
