I like it - nothing wrong with a bit of arrogance.
Especially after you have been overlooked in the ND and especially if your going to be a forward pocket.

I think poltom is coming from the view that Ben Ross has broken the 'cliche talk' of how players respond and as you said zebra, has a point to prove but just for his own sake, I just think he'll learn to tame his lingo when he settles into the starting 22...the kid is excited. I don't a problem with that...could be our Aker...:p

According to today's AGE (can't find the online version of the article) there was a whole story behind us selecting Ben Ross.

We were initially going to rookie him, but then found out that Carlton, St Kilda and Hawthorn are looking at grabbing him in the PSD.

We then changed our plans and picked him with pick 3. As a result, Carlton chose Cloke with their last PSD pick, instead of selecting Cloke in the rookie draft as they planned to do.

Hawthorn was so shocked to see Ross drafted by us that they took a very long time to make their PSD selection, finally opting to redraft Thurgood.

Interesting information. It appears we've done well, and helped Cloke and Thurgood get on senior lists in the process.
Thurgood. Has anyone ever done less to be retained?

I mean, you get your face broken by hard man Matty LLOYDYYY!!!YYY!Y!Y!!!!! You'd book yourself into a home and stay there for a loooong time after that.

Same thing happened when we drafted Urquhart in the draft. The Hawks were apparently interested and I noticed they took a long time with their 24th pick.

On SEN, they mentioned the reason the Hawks took their maximum time limit with pick 24 was they were shocked Renouf slipped passed the 1st round. It was unexpected, and the Hawks recruitment had to brief Clarkson about Renouf. Gave the nod in the final few seconds.

Great choice in Gavin Urquhart he would of been the Hawks next pick if still available after Renouf.

As for Ben Ross, you've got a steal. Personally didn't like the re-appointment of Thurgood but next year he'll be on death row if he does not show any progress. Very promising a few years ago but stepping up into the AFL level he is easily exposed by his lack of weight and strength.

Not sure what happened to Thurgood, he played a really good game against us last year then just vanished. He really attacked the ball and ran off the half back line. He definitely needs to put on some more weight, didn't really notice him even in the Box Hill games I saw. Perhaps the de-listing will be the push he really needs.

Ben Ross - Represented Vic Country in last year's National Under-18 Championships and was taken at No 3 overall in the NAB AFL Draft. Dean Laidley believes the flashy, crumbing forward and grandson of former South Melbourne player Max Papley, has the ability to break into the club's senior line-up this year.

POWER DELIGHT IN DRAFT

Gippsland Power – Press Release
By Bryan Mitchell
12th December 2006
00113875-thumbnail.jpg

Today’s 2006 AFL Pre-Season/Rookie drafts saw Gippsland Power players figure prominently with Ben Ross being selected by the Kangaroos in the Pre-season draft and Ben Hughes (Kangaroos), Brent Macaffer (Collingwood) and Rob Eddy (St Kilda) gaining a chance of a coveted AFL career through the Rookie Draft process. The Power officials are delighted to have six players picked up in 2006 and relieved that four such quality players had their talents recognised despite missing out on the draft in November.
The Kangaroos “surprise” selection of Ben might have confused the experts in the media but all at the Power club knew that he should have been selected earlier. His unique blend of pace, skill and ability to read the play makes him a ready made AFL player. He was a match winner in the TAC Cup and can electrify matches when he takes his opponents on. He will be joined at the Kangaroos by Ben Hughes (Warragul) whose determination and self-discipline saw him go from being a spare parts player in 2005 to one of the lynch-pin players for the side in 2006. His commitment, strength and work ethic will ensure that he takes full advantage of his opportunities at the Kangaroos.

TAC Cup 2006 Round 4 Review and Round 5 Preview
http://taccup.footballvic.com.au/default.aspx?s=genericnewsdisplay&kw=55&aid=105954

This weekend the TAC Cup welcomes four interstate teams to the competition’s fixture for the first time this season.

Teams from Queensland, Northern Territory and NSW-ACT journey to Victoria to take on the state’s finest junior footballers, while competition leaders the Northern Knights travel across Bass Strait to tackle the Tassie Mariners.

The interstate teams each play three matches in the TAC Cup this season to prepare for national under-18 championships and to get a taste of the country’s elite junior football competition.

In round five action on Saturday, the Bendigo Pioneers will have their hands full against the slick Northern Territory side, Gippsland Power should be too good for the Western Jets, Oakleigh Chargers should get back on the winners list when they travel to Wangaratta to play the Murray Bushrangers, and the Calder Cannons host Queensland.

Last weekend, reigning premier Gippsland Power rediscovered its 2005 form with a 57-point win against the Calder Cannons.

Calder was above Gippsland on the ladder heading into round four with two impressive wins from three matches but the Power, helped by 34 possessions from prolific midfielder Ricky Delphine, put the game beyond doubt with seven goals to two in the final quarter.

The Power’s Tristan Francis worked overtime, laying 11 tackles for the match, while Ben Ross, with 5 goals, and big man Lachlan Hansen, four goals, got the job done on the scoreboard.

Devils set the pace

THE Tasmanian Devils wrapped up preparations for their 2007 VFL campaign with a seven-point win over the toughest opposition the club has ever faced in a pre-season contest.

The Devils downed SANFL club West Adelaide 15.15 (105) to 14.14 (98) after fighting hard to stave off an 11th-hour surge by the Bloods.

The West Adelaide side had class and plenty of AFL experience. Their line-up included Luke Jericho (Adelaide), Jason Porplyzia (Port Adelaide), and former league players Mark Dragicevic (Richmond), Luke Donaldson (Western Bulldogs), Peter Walsh (Melbourne-Port Adelaide) and Damien Cupido (Brisbane-Essendon).

The Devils were rapt to beat a side of that calibre.

"There are some real positive signs there," said coach coach Daryn Cresswell.

"Our pre-season has been good -- we've played two, won two. That gives us a lot of confidence going forward."

The Devils' engineroom showed a pile of grunt, although it ran low on fuel late in the match.

That opened the door for a late charge by West Adelaide in the fourth quarter.

The Bloods surged from 26 points down to within one point by the 28-minute mark, then up stepped wingman Brody Johnson with a goal that secured the game and may have also secured his place in the opening round match against Bendigo in Melbourne in two weeks.

"We've been trying to implement this running game, and they're slowly getting hold of it," Creswell said.

"They were terrific in the first three quarters the way they ran and linked the ball up.

"But it's a style of game that's very tiring and in the last quarter we completely run out of legs."

Up forward, a fit and firing down Adam Derbyshire was a magnet for the ball charging out from full-forward.

He bagged a game-high five goals and could have done better. His tally included four behinds.

The Devils had five players from their AFL partner the Kangaroos.

The best were Cameron Thurley with 32 possessions and 11 marks, and blond bombshell Ben Ross, who kicked three goals and ran West Adelaide ragged.

The Devils have high expectations of young half-back Tim McMichael, who was terrific as a rebound defender, while Sam Carins kept Cupido to only a handful of grabs.

Brett Geappen (29 possessions) and Ken Hall (27) have two new partners in crime on the ball this season in Paul Koulourides (29) and pack-buster Brodie Moles (15).

Overheard the coaching group talking about this game at AAMI stadium yesterday. They were mainly talking about how good Gumbleton was, according to whoever they got their info from, but Don McDonald seemed extremely happy about Ben Ross, too.

Re: 37. Ben Ross

The issue could be the role he could bring to the seniors.

Even assuming LT can grab a HFF or midfield role, could we play both Ross and Campbell in the seniors?

I am assuming that Ross' BOG would not have been from a pocket so he obviously impressed up the ground

Re: 37. Ben Ross

Thanx for the article Micky11. JYD did mention that Ross is a livewire around goals (pre-seaon) so I think fringe guys like Harding & McConnell better make a hard fist of thier opportunities when they resume to hopefully get interest from another clubs (VFL more likely) or their careers are kaput. **toilet flushes**

I went to Tassie/Bendigo game and posted some comments on it in another thread. Agree that Gumbleton was impressive but so was Ben Ross. I include below my comments from that thread

Ben Ross. Blown away by this guy. Goal Hungry and a Ball Hog and i just loved it. Great to see a young bloke have the confidence/arrogance to think he can do everything. Quick. Reads the play well. Good evasion skills. Courage. Good overhead. Chased Hard. And everytime he got the ball his first, second and third thought was how do i kick a goal from here. Natural Football talent. Still small and kicking let him down a couple of times. May not play AFL this year but cant wait till he does.

Perhaps i was a little bit carried away but it was a great day at Windy Hill. I actually wouldnt have said he was tassies best player on the day but it was a great game from a player making his VFL senior debut.

He played a half foward/wing type role. Wasnt at the the feet of Derbyshire (their full foward) but pushed up the ground. Interesting to see whether he can play a midfield role as well but i would never play him too far from goals.

Re: 37. Ben Ross

Ben Ross copped an injury to shoulder/collarbone in during the Round 2 VFL game vs Geelong. Early reports have him out for 4-6 weeks.

Re: 37. Ben Ross

Ben Ross copped an injury to shoulder/collarbone in during the Round 2 VFL game vs Geelong. Early reports have him out for 4-6 weeks.

The shoulder injury wasn't as bad as initially reported, only missing 2 rounds of footy and returned to the VFL in the game against Frankston on the weekend.

While the Devils were soundly beaten, Ben Ross showed his class and was one of his sides shining lights kicking a couple of goals and one of the few decent players for Tassie on the day.

Class act, but due to his absence via injury, Leigh Adams has leap frogged him in the pecking order and will have to wait until later in the season to get his opportunity and a taste of senior AFL footy.
