You have left out a load of players who will likely be there in 3 years time.

Hopper, Taranto, Miller, Balta, just from the established players, and every chance Lefau is still there if his knees hold up. There are 3 x A & B Graders there.

And then you have partially answered your own question. We will have so much cap space it is almost certain we pick up 2-3 mature A or B grade recruits in trades or as Free Agents. After 2 more drafts we should be a very attractive club for players wanting to come to us. Even if that process is delayed beyond 2-3 years, it will only likely allow us to boost our player stocks further through the draft/
mentioned the 25 to 28 year olds and the vets aged 29 plus a page or two back.
It was listed in response to the comment of there will be plenty of core listed players there in three years time.
I simply pointed out that is not going to be the case and backed it up with players ages in three years time and what quality we may have.

I then listed what 22 - 24 year olds we have which is what you have replied to.

The original comment i replied to was, In three years time as our 2024 draftees start to become genuine full time AFL pro's we will still have A LOT of our core OLDER players there to hold it all together.
I simply pointed out we have few and even fewer are likely to be there in three years time simply thru age and quality.

It's appalling that we have built an amazing young list so quickly. It'll all be a disaster

What amazing young list. So far the 18 juniors that is 18 -21 year olds we have are either living off potential tags or have not even played. We wont know what we have until they play and play for a few years at least.

The 10 juniors we had before the last crop came on board have managed 117 games for a whopping average of 11.7 games between them.
Are these 10 juniors potentially as good as most other teams juniors? well i damn well hope so but last year before the draft our juniors were being hailed as one of the worst junior lists in the comp. One haul of 8 is not enough.
A lot of catching up is still needed given we will have failures among those newbies.

Might be wise to allow them to play before we start calling them amazing. For sure with the picks we had its likely we will find a few gooduns, or will we? How many will fail what percentage do we work off. Then there is the problem of getting them collectively to 50 80 100 games.

The kids will either thrive or fail give them time to do either. We will most likely know what we actually have at the end of this year from the 2021 class.
Five top 30 picks not that 5 picks was enough and we still dont know what we have for various reasons.Acouple have serious injury concerns and the others are probably not as far advanced as we hoped.

Our woes are not kids. We have just began a rebuild it will take as long as it takes. Longer than most think imo.
I can confidently say we have only just began a rebuild because that usually means heavy participation in nd for a sustained period.
From 2020 to 2023 we used just 11 nd picks over those four years and half of them came in just one draft. Hardly rebuild mode more like a club very happy with it its lot or in this case list in life.
I believe the average number taken each year per club is around 8. May be wrong on that one.

Our woes begin with the 22- 24 year olds only blinkered supporters would argue that group is not lacking quality players.
Are the likes of Mansell and Ross, the best of that group going to drag us to another flag. Those two at least have become regular players.

It flow's into the 25 to 28 yr olds our mature group or players in their prime, because atm there is just 6 players in this group. Miller Lefau and Young fall into this category. In three years time of the other three only Balta will still be in his prime with Hopper 31 and Taranto 30.

It ends with the seven vets 29 plus year olds we have who mostly remain in our best players and make up the bulk of the core players we have and they will not be here much longer. There is every chance all six will be gone in three years time.
All are at least already 30 bar Short who offers nothing to a young side imo. You would not get good odds on four of them being there next year given injuries form yet alone age.

I suppose we are talking about the quality of the list from the age 22 thru 28 and
Imho there is just three players who are currently B grade or better atm. That may change but you can only call it as it is now.

We've just taken 12 x top 30 picks in the last 4 drafts.

1 Lalor
7 Smillie
9 Gibcus
13 Faull
14 Hotton
17 Brown
21 Trainor
23 Armstrong
28 Sonsie, Sims
29 Banks
30 Clarke

Those top 30 picks averaged around pick 18.

Let's have a look at the drafts in which we recruited the key players in our dynasty team(2006-11):

2 Cotchin
3 Martin

6 Conca
8 Vickery
13 Riewoldt
15 B Ellis
18 Rance

19 Griffiths
26 Edwards, Post, Elton
30 Batchelor

That took 6 drafts. Those 12 top 30 picks averaged at pick 16.

That earlier team took until 2012 to start winning roughly half their games, and in 2013 they had a 15 win season.

Counting from 2021 when the current rebuild actually started, and we followed the earlier teams schedule, we are competitive in 2027, finals 2028, flag 2032.

Of course so many things are different. But many of those are in our favour.

1. Free Agency*
2. Cap trading*
3. Future trading*
4. Experience of having built a recent dynasty team
5. Multiple flag winning players to guide our younger guys as they start out

*Of course these first 3 points can also help our rivals, but we appear very well positioned in relation to these.

During the earlier 6 year period we also picked up Astbury, Grigg, Houli, Grimes. But during the last 4 years we have Mansell, Blight, Bauer, Trezise, Gray, Green, Smith, Campbell, McAulliffe, Fawcett, Alger with 3rd round or rookie picks, and it would be a surprise if a good handful of those are not still around and well established by 2027. Then there are the two likely early first round picks next year.

If our selections and development are decent, and with fair luck with injuries etc, we should be expecting to rise within 3-4 seasons.

Can we get this thread back onto #16 Josh Smillie !!

Why are we reading pages and pages of waffle about what the team could look like in 5 years time
im sure there would be another place that crap can be posted
There is No Smillie news. Posters are padding until we have preseason games.

They might need to be managed that is all. Lalor has a really big body to carry around, needs to be handled with kid gloves for a season or two. They did it with McAuliffe last year, and plenty of new kids get stress related injuries.

Smillie is big but not overly muscled so will come up against seasoned 90kg mids who will try to physically intimidate him and then run him into the ground. Centre square mid is not an easy gig for an 18 year old.

I have no problem starting them as long as they have shown on the track and preseason that they deserve it, but letting them play VFL at the same time will aid their development just as much, and build their bodies as well.

Sorry … when I say ‘never leave the team’ … I accept they may be rested etc… but I don’t think either will ever play VFL.

Just talk about how much he has grown and beefed up
Had kind of noodly arms for a bloke his size looking bigger and more defined now. Scary that he’ll get substantially stronger with more time in the gym. Was ragdolling campaigners at training from day one.
