Hope we have him ready for the Collingwood praccy game. It's a shame about the interrupted preseason but I still reckon we'll all be running onto the MCG Round 22 against the Saints, if Ooze plays him CHB
What date that Feb 27 I think , month away should be fine , Fmd when I last pulled a hammy I missed a weekend of golf and I’m over 50 , that’s right one weekend , u read right

When i first saw this kid i thought he could be a generational player. Early last year i had him at #1..
A poor carnival and list needs had me revise and i had two in particular in front of him. Lalor and Draper.

I still think we have a generational player. Now get his freakin Hammy right tiges.

Well thats great if he plays golf

You guys are worried about a slight hammy in January with 40+ days remaining for round 1

anyway who cares if he doesnt play until round 5

Its only 2025

100%

unfortunately, oppo trolls won't see it like that if one of the other draftees gets selected and plays well really early on.

Sounds like you have the same physical attributes as an AFL footballer

Decent showing off half back. Definitely drafted to be an inside mid, but I don't mind the idea of giving him a bit more of an outside load and then slowly introducing the inside stuff

edit: A bit like the model for Daicos, Sheezel and Will Day

Agreed, he would make a great half back flanker

You’ve convinced me!

I theory this could work, but he has lost some weeks of footy so has gone behind the pack for opening rounds.

But a few things negate the idea. First half back at AFL requires very high levels of fitness. We don't need an interceptor, we have Broad and Vlastuin doing that and they are very good at it. No way Smillie could cover the ground that Broad does, nor work as hard defensively.

Also, Trainor was recruited for the exact position you are suggesting Smillie plays. He was the no.1 junior intercept and distributing defender in the country, so that would mean pushing Trainor back in the pecking order.

And, what of Smith, Trezise and Brown. All three have had ripping preseasons, are fast and have AFL quality attributes. All three need to be looked at. Brown is a cert, but both Smith and Trezise are hot on his heels and give us rebound and pace, particularly Smith.

I would love to see all three over Short at half back but that is unlikely given the preseason positioning.

Besides, Smillie should only be used sparingly in the middle when he finally gets going. So should Hopper and Prestia given their injury worries. Ross and Taranto can rotate forward, so there is scope for both he and Lalor to rotate through the middle.

Smillie is different to most other starting mids like Daicos and Sheezel that you mention, he is already a monster size and physically doesn't need to be protected, a bit like Ross when he first started, plenty big enough.

No problems with any of that and well reasoned.

but then the question still remains, if not HBF, what is his secondary position?

because he wont be playing 80% minutes in the middle straight off the bat.
