I'll be in lovely Glenelg this weekend, soaking up some Adelaide sun....(I Hope). Still not sure if we will go to the game yet, but if not will be in one of the pubs watching the Hawks go around.

If we are serious about this year we will win the match, if we lose then its going to be another long season. BUT, having said that, I think we will see a very determined Hwks outfit this week and for the 2011 season. Its make or break now. Big Jeff is on his way out and if we have another 09, 10 season, then Jeff will go out swinging!

The Crows will come out firing, we have to match it and then in the third or early in the 4th, just start to pull away.

Its now or never, no more bs lame, soft excuses.

Tippet declared a non-starter. Bit surprised, would have thought Adelaide would leave that until much later to keep Hawkk guessing.

Still not sure if Hodge will play, even though he'd run through a brick wall to get on the field. If so, wouldn't mind seeing WhiteX move to the centre with maybe Shiels up forward.

Certainly not upset about Tippett not playing. He's a good, abeit sometimes variable, player who, when on song, can kick a handful of goals. Given their bye the week later, it makes sense for them to rest a player who may not quite be right I would think. You could argue the "push through this week then you have 2 weeks to recover" train of thought, but it's a long season so probably not worth the risk.

Re. Hodge, hinted that he could be the sub for the game. On the off chance the game is over early, I have no doubt they'd bring him off and rest him. But I wonder if, at some stage during the third quarter he can tell he's tiring and both teams are locked in battle, whether he'd be willing to sub himself off? (or whoever makes the call, whether they'd pull arguably our best player off)

HAWTHORN captain Luke Hodge says he might be the club's first substitute. Asked if he could play as a substitute, he said: "That could be a possibility."

He only played 53 mins in the practice match. It's clear that he won't be able to run out a full game. I'm guessing if there were no subs they would of deemed him as not match fit and omitted this week.

Remember the sub can only be used ONCE and only ONCE. This means you probably won't you use it unless it's necessary. Scenarios for using a sub in the most relevant order would be:

  1. - Player is injured and cannot take any further action in the game. Sub is used to replace injured player.
  2. - Players is injured but can continue playing. Sub may be used to as a precaution for injured player. This would still be firstly dependent on scoreline and how much more of an impact the injured player would have for the remainder of the game. Depending on injury substitute may be a better option but you wouldn't substitute in the first half of a game.
  3. - Substitute may be used late in the game for tactical reasons. Probably no later than half way through the last quarter but it may come down to coaching discretion to exact time. This is banking on the likely odds that one or two players won't get injured in the last quarter.

If you take in consideration the previous scenarios, the reason why an unfit Hodge would be used as a substitute are:

  • Would likely not be needed until late in a game.
  • Is the perfect substitute given he can play any position.
  • Could be used late in a game to swing the game in our favour.
  • Hodge could still be an influential captain in many ways, even as a substitute.
Of course there is another school of thought which would suggest Hodge plays the game, and if needed as a swingman to take the deficient position of the injured or substitute player would create. Substitute then is simply used to replace injured play with no loss to structure.

The only problem I see with that, is that Hodge won't be able to finish the game and will be using a high risk situation, on top of been forced into substitution.

In summary I would suggest using this as if we don't have a substitute. Hodge is sub and hopefully he won't be needed to come on the ground.

You are going to be in the same city as the Hawks and you are only considering going to the game.

Cmon man it should be a lock in!!

I really can't see Hodge start as the sub. I think he will start the game and then be subbed off after 3 quarters spending little to no time in the middle. I don't think coaches will be all that fazed about the risk of having to cope with an injury after substitution for less than a quarter. Especially when we have buddy who can move into the midfield to provide some extra run if needed.

The Better option would be to play him in the foward pocket the entire game. Even unfit he would be our best option for that position.

c'mon every supporter base has ferals.
Yes, but how many supporter bases scratch their own players cars just because they have Victorian numberplates?

Maybe you should ask Tony Hall about that one.

well I reckon adeliade away is the toughest trip for the hawks and if we win it we can very excited as last time we did we won the flag.

Aami is total squeeky bum time for me.

However gone are the big bodies in the midfield for the crows and although their kids are going ok I expect us to win this one.

Will be in Adelaide on an end-of-season cricket trip and have tickets to the game. Deal is that I keep the Hawthorn supporters amongst us from getting thrown out, and they keep me from getting thrown out for abusing Tambling. Kinda hoping Franklin lines up on him for the first bounce.

You will not survive this Ron -- you want me to notify your next of kin ?

The last time I went to AAMI in 08, when Hodgey kicked that winner, we were nearly in 3 punch ons, just walking into the ground. The game had not even started yet. And after the game, well, I tell ya, they are very sore losers over there.

And they get more heated when you ignore their bs!

We will decide when we get over there. Plus $29 for general admin.....bit steep!

You'll probably treat him no different than when he wore the black and gold I guess

I'd be surprised if Tambling plays to be honest.

Comment was tongue in cheek. I defended Tambling until last year; he was one of our better players in 2009 but couldn't adapt to a new role under Hardwick. It was just better for both parties that he start again somewhere else. If I'm tempted to yell out, it'll be jokes rather than abuse.

I won't be barracking for either side, but am keen to experience the famous local feralism. Plus Franklin is the best player in the game to watch.

Been to Aami before? I've been in the carpark and had second thoughts :D

Crows supporters aren't as bad as the Port ones.

Still feral. I reckon besides Brisbane and Sydney, the interstate clubs have worse supporters than Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, and other Melbourne clubs.

And you'd be right.

That's because there is no need for restraint. 43 000 crows supporters, all trying to show their maniacal hatred of the opposition, no matter who, can say what they like, when they like. The only time they're ever told to pull their head in is when they are bagging their own. Unlike a normal game, there aren't enough oppositon supporters around to get them to modify their own behaviour. And now it's generational. The 13 year old kid who saw games in 1991 is now 33 & has kids of his/her own so that behaviour is just passed on.

It used to be a hatred of anything Victorian, before 1/4 of the population aged between 18-35 went to live there. (Source: 2004 census)

BIG ask for the Hawks against Adelaide; at Aami, Saturday night, majority of the stadium behind the Crows.

My concern is mainly derived from those variables, however, having seen a lack of our game plan this pre-season it's hard to make a rational prediction for what to expect.
