I guess what shits me is that as a purist it turns matches into
Shootouts. I genuinely enjoyed watching england and New Zealand because the styles were contrasting but there were still ebbs and flows and changing tempos to the game. Even the australia Pakistan series was like that too and to Australia’s credit they were good enough to seize the moments and win the series.

This match it’s like both teams have looked at the pitch and gone ‘it’s gonna spin’ and from the moment the 5th wicket fell in Sri lanka’s first innings it’s like every batsman as admitted it’s too much of a challenge to bother trying to build an innings
That decision has most definitely backfired for the Sri Lankans.

I agree with the purism sentiment too, games like this are fine in isolation, but there hasn't been any real contest between bat and ball. The best kinds of tests are the ones that go down to the wire in the fifth day, and every inch has to be earned.

Green and Ussie didn't build meaningful innings?

Both were meaningful innings but Usman’s was the closest one to being ‘built.’ Green is a class player but again his innings galloped along as though his plan was simply to be aggressive.

You can’t bag guys for doing it and succeeding - it’s a lot better than the alternative - but same as Dickwella in the first innings it wasn’t a nuanced knock where he’s had to come up with multiple methods and manoeuvred his way through the innings. It’s not a shot at australia they’ve done it better than Sri Lanka have. It seems to be a trend in the cricket I’ve watched when the conditions are very spin friendly.
