2 Mistakes that cost Hawthorn

its the umpires fault. they did there best all game to hand it to hawthorn, but to geelongs credit they managed to overcome this obstacle

I was out and got home to see the last 7-8 minutes.

Hawks had it won and only needed a tiny bit of composure to score or keep the contest in their forward line.

they let the cat out of the bag, not sure if it was a choke - probably a lucky win to geelong

Nah Geelong were the better side for most of the game and would have been unlucky to lose it, if it wasn't for the umpires trying to even up the game by helping Hawthorn they wouldn't have got close.

Just watched the replay, the umpiring was better than i thought. All up i think there was about 5-6 bad errors against Geelong and 2-3 against Hawthorn.

Look forward to your posts about (a) the most obvious throw of all time which wasn't called, robbing the Cats of a shot on goal about 25 metres out directly in front (b) Mackie being pinged for jumping in the air and contesting the mark while facing the ball with no interference of any kind to a Hawks player (c) the free to the Hawks inside 50 for a push in the back by Lonergan in which he did no such thing (d) the amazing new rule where the Hawks can play on to advantage for a downfield free kick when play has stopped completely.

Or in your universe are dodgy calls only important in the last minute of the game?

Oh, and in the context of the game and the way the last quarter was umpired that was never holding the ball in a million years. If they called that they would also have had to call about 20 others by Cats and Hawks players alike.

And the holding the man decision when the ball was out of bounds

Can't blame sewell after riolis tackle not paid, would have went on instinct without the whistle.

Stop whining about that non free kick of Rioli's. What about Burgoyne's rugby pass 10 metres out from the cats goal? The umpires got you hawks back in the game. 26 frees to 14... What a joke.

Sewell playing on from the free kick that they got on the edge of the sqaure. Just had to hold it up and steady, take some time off the clock and pump it in long. 1 min left, they may well have held on if Sewell takes a breath

And Puopolo hacking the ball from mid air trying to kick an impossible goal. Just plain silly when he had time to grab it

amazing what pressure does to you, Sewell was so good all game, but one blunder can cost you

No...what cost you the game is that the umpires stopped handing you bogus free kicks in front of goal in the last five minutes. I can't believe the number of whinging whining hawk supporters carrying on about free kicks when hawthorn clearly got handed five goals by the men in green. They got the old Friday night evener upperer routine from the umps especially in the second quarter.

Amazing game though and glad to have watched it

The free kick was actually paid as well. Hate the whinging about free kicks.

There is no where in the rules that it says the free kicks to be even

you'll regret that comment in a year or two

just saying

NSIS o_O

in a year or two, even if he rises to Zac Dawson's level, the comment based on this game will remain unchanged.

These mistakes were disastrous and it's the sort of thing that has cost the hawks in recent cats games. But .... The game was lost when hawthorn were out-muscled early and rather than play their bold 40 meter passing game they resorted to trying to play safe with dinky chips which resulted in trouble seeing Geelong were always going to play a man on man game putting a heap of pressure on the ball carrier. Better to make this mistake now then fly into the finals and get a rude awakening.

What it has cost them is a top 2 position most likely. Adelaide will be hard to toss out for top2 as they should start clear favorites in all their remaining games while the other top 4 contenders are all playing each other mutliple times. Hawks will probably be 2 games behind Sydney after this round and 1 behind Collingwood so their destiny is in the hands of others. Even beating Syd on the SCG and winning all other games doesn't guarantee top 2 now. 1 more loss and top 2 almost certainly gone.

Hawks likey to be travelling in finals now. makes it much tougher. How do Hawks fans feel about this?

Winning the last four games should get them into top 2. If it's still not enough the upside is that they'll be with momentum going into the finals and shouldn't fear playing anyone, anywhere.

Let me tell you one thing, they showed plenty of resolve and character to come back from a 40+ pt deficit and take the lead. I'm happier knowing that now.

I wonder if Franklin had played and if the final passage of play was reversed and it was Hawthorn with the break away and Franklin on the lead, would he have gone for the mark like Hawkins did or would he have dived to ground hoping to draw a free kick?

All these little things which Hawthorn have done in previous matches. Sliding doors effect is strange to ponder at times

What difference does what happened earlier in the game make? the final few minutes did matter and missed HtB call cost us.
so let's not play a whole game the. From. Now on we will just play a few minutes and see who wins.

Shouldn't Hawkins have been called play on, thus meaning hawthorn win?

Not only did he have the ball at least 40 seconds, he ran off the line

Took the mark and the umpire and blew the whistle and acknowledged it with 23 secs left on the clock.

Umpire didn't blow the whistle and acknowledge the final siren until the ball was on Hawkins' boot.

So NO to both your questions.
