Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Such a longer road back at his age, Father Time catches all of us. If this is the end of the road, He’s been a loyal servant, just keep your eyes on your fries 🍟 if you’re near him though.

No one who we have delisted in the past 2 seasons would be in the team right now.

If it's a long term thing and he can't make it back then we will have a spot in the mid season draft.

It's really not that big of a deal if retaining him for another year doesn't amount to anything.
What would that mean in terms of salary? He used to be on a pretty decent contract when we re-signed him in his early 20's. No idea now at 32 and injury prone

I reckon with these last couple of contracts, he'd be one of the lowest paid at the club.
Fingers crossed he gets on the park at some stage this year (though my optimism is fading fast), as a fit and firing Sam Reid is an absolute bonus to our team.

He’ll still be recovering from that well into his 40s and 50s

Sort of inevitable this might happen his body has been shot for the last two years but I can understand keeping him on as a rookie. Would be good cover for any of the three forwards and if Grundy went down McLean could go first ruck and Reid chop out.
Hopefully he does get a few VFL games under him so we do have some coverage going into finals.

Would you or anyone support giving him a contract for 2025?

Not 2025 ....his body really hasn't allowed him to play enough football over the last couple of years. Ladhams and Hamling can cover the back up ruck forward role and Buller has another year.
Definitely a horse favourite which probably got him the extension for this year.

If (and it's the world's biggest if) Reid can stay fit he would be a HUGE inclusion for our side.

I think we are forgetting just how good his form was in 2022 and he was close to best on against Collingwood in the first half of that prelim (I don't think it was a coincidence we fell to pieces when he went off).

His agile, a great second ruck, a great contested mark (that has improved with time) and a nightmare matchup for the opposition.

Now who makes way.... Jeez that's the hard discussion (Maybe McLean... But only if Reid is fit and in form).

Be a massive inclusion if plays anywhere near 22

This hurts me more than it hurts you, young Bonz.

Oh dear Bonz.......
I reckon I'm one of the biggest Sammy apologist on here and even I have conceded we won't be seeing him again.

Just be happy he’s on the verge of a return.

It’s obvious that MCLean, Amartey and McDonald are the ones to stay in the side. You don’t try to fix what’s not broken. But the also obvious inclusion and least impactful to the structure of the side if any of those three go down or get a suspension is Reid.

Just get behind him gaining some fitness in the twos. If required he is the obvious choice for those three players. The ideal
Situation is he’s not required but we need some insurance. It’s a positive not a reason to poo on him for his injury history.

He probably knows the writing is on the wall but he’s out there giving his all to get right for the side if required.

I wouldn't, was out all of last year and injured all this year. I'd just bank the salary money and use it elsewhere. We have other talls in the event we have injuries next year.

Exciting news that Sam is a test this week. Timing his run perfectly for another grand final appearance. Awesome !
Not sure if serious. Given his injury history and lack of match fitness, I'd be looking at other options for a GF, and I'd imagine Horse would be a little gun shy if faced with that proposition given what happened in 2022.

Noone makes way for Sam imo. He'd only come in if there were injuries to our key talls, and likely only for Amartey / McDonald. McLean definitely wouldn't make way given they're at the opposite ends of the durability spectrum. I'm not sure how Buller is tracking, but he's another potential inclusion. We also have Parker who could come into consideration if a tall went down. He can play tall in the forward line, so if we were to lose one of our key talls (Amartey / Mcdonald), we may look to replace them with Parker as he can take a mark, but can also provide defensive pressure. Ladhams would be the replacement for McLean you'd think.
