Draft Review 2006 - Redo the 2006 Draft

Tippet above Gibbs, Riewoldt and others? Tippet is ridiculously overrated. No way the 7th best player in the draft.

1. Joel Selwood - I hate this campaigner but no doubt one of the best players in the league.

2. Travis Boak - Respect this campaigner and again an easy lock for 2nd.

3. Josh Kennedy - Shown more in his career to slightly edge out Gray.

4. Robbie Gray - Shot up the ranks through one season. I'd back him in to repeat it in 2015.

5. Eric Mackenzie - Has played defence in both good and bad WCE teams and has performed to an elite standard in both. Has performed A Grade longer than Gibbs to just edge him out.

6. Bryce Gibbs - Has always been a consistent player in a shit and mediocre team. Has only just turned 25 (bottom ager) and is hitting his straps.

7. Tom Hawkins - Don't rate the fat shit as much as others. Has played both main and 2nd forward in arguably the best AFL team in the modern era. Wouldn't have the hardest job in football.

8. Jack Riewoldt - Whinging gay campaigner but quality forward.

9. Todd Goldstein - One of the games premium rucks. But you wouldn't take him ahead of any of the previous 8.

10. James Frawley - Would walk away with a quality FB at pick 10 anyday. Should look 10 fold better at Hawthorn next year then the AFL graveyard Melshit.

I would take Goldstein before Gibbs. Goldy has made 2 AA squads and just finished 2nd in the B&F of a top 4 side. Which has to be rated higher than winning a B&F in a team that finished 13th.

Lonergan really shouldn't be considered. Including him is the equivalent of including a rookie promotion. He was drafted in 2002, suffered a career threatening injury in 2006 and was understandably retained as a rookie while he made his comeback.

In retrospect a great draft for the Tigers. Our first two picks in Jack Riewoldt and Shane Edwards were steals at where we got them and, while our late picks were all duds, we've managed to trade in Houli and Grigg (Pettard as well but he's not that great a steal). Port did really well with Robbie Gray at 55 and Westhoff at 71. Essendon had a shocker!

I'd argue mids are more valuable than the ruckman that feed it to them.

I.e Hawthorn who have flourished despite awful ruckman for the last decade

One example doesn't change that. Where would Freo be without Sandilands? Mumford at Sydney, Cox at West Coast etc

You simply cannot say Ruckman are more important than Midfielders and those examples prove it.

Freo havent won anything especially when Sandi was at his most dominant. They are in their best form now off the back of Fyfe, Neale, Hill, Mundy and Barlow despite Sandi being no where near his best.

Cox was feeding it down to Judd Cousins and Kerr when he won his premiership and Cox is hardly a ruckman anyway but more of a freak of nature - unlike Goldstein

Ruckman is one of the few positions that you do not need a superstar. It certainly helps, but a ruckman cannot be "franchise" player like a Key Forward or a Mid can be. The excellent ruckman these days are the ones that can move around the ground and get marks and play as a second midfielder where possible - see S.Martin, Cox, Kreuzer, Naitanui those types of mobile ruckman. Traditional ruckman like Goldstein and Jacobs are still very good ruckman who excel at ruckwork getting key marks on the wings and dropping forward where required but you cant say they are more important than midfielders.

It doesnt matter how good the tap is if the midfielder gets beaten at ground level it will get sharked by the other team.

I disagree. Think you're coming from a conclusion and then working backwards to justify it. Fact is there are always more midfielders in a team and less the specialised positions. Anyway, expect we're not going to agree so happy to leave it there.

I think the top end rucks can make a massive difference. Nic Nat v the dogs on the weekend. Goldy and Nic Nat v essendon.

Goldy is a star, no question about that, and yeah he has carried you to the finals, but that will be as far as he get's you. Top 8 is one thing, top 4 and a prelim/grandfinal on the back of a ruckman is another.

Great midfields can suceed without great ruckman, great ruckman cannot succeed without great midfields.

Look at the St Kilda grand final sides, the Sydney premeirs with Pyke as their ruckman, even Hawthords ruck stocks have been very average over this period.

2014 (Pyke v Hale) - Sandi (AA 4th) Martin (15th) Lobbe (5th) Mumford (16th) Goldy (6th)

The best ruckman who have won premierships have probably been Mumford in 2012 (subsequently had a very good Sydney Midfield to work with) and then back to Cox in the Eagles days maybe? (who also had an all time great midfield)
