I am a massive fan of stokes but this is the best for the side . Its good to see his reaction to this if he is willing to front the media and show support for the boys in this one of his lowest moments in his carrer . I would have been very upset if Wojo was to miss out again .Can't wait till saturday common caterzzzzzzzz!!!!

Interesting though no Tom Gillies as an emergency? So if anyone in our backline goes down before then we will have troubles.

You can bring in new emergencies as long as you notify the opposition.

While I am happy for the Woj Boy I think he's very luck as his kicking efficiency is piss-poor at best. A high pressure GF will limit the amount of time he has to settle and kick.

I thought Stokes would get back in as he has done everything asked of him according to the coach in the later part of the season and he is a far more flexible player than the Woj Boy. Woj has only 1 trick - albeit a bloody good one - that is to break the lines - but it's no good half the time as he then sprays the kick. Stokes is a far more complete footballer.

But maybe the choice wasn't between Stokes and Woj but between Stokes and one of Byrnes and Varcoe? You couldn't leave them out after their 2 goal games last week - yet that's exactly what Stokes had in his last game - and he limited the effectiveness of his Bulldogs opponent.

I guess that groin injury came at the very worst time for Stokes - yet he could have played! It was his call to not play and now he gets left out of the GF!

Life totally sucks sometimes.

Don't worry mate, you summed it up in your last couple of paras. It's unfortunate but there was no other way to go given how they all performed last week in Stokes' absence.

Re: Grand Final Team

What are thoughts on this? good? bad?

I think it's a clear sign of where Ross Lyon's head is as.

Defensive.

Baker, McQualter, Jones and Dempster are all run-with, tagging type players. None of them will rack up huge possessions or be a huge offensive threat (though McQualter's kicked a few goals this year).

Personally I wouldn't like to see us carrying so many defensive players.

On Dempster specifically, he played rounds 15-22 before being dropped for the finals. In those eight games he averaged just 11 disposals.

I have no doubt they want him to stop either SJ or Chapman - problem is, they're two of the hardest forwards in the league to tag because they are so creative and the ball is down there so often. Personally I would have had them play more attacking players like Gilbert or Fisher on our guys because at least they could attempt to exploit us the other way.

I hope my words don't come back to haunt me, but I don't understand how Baker has kept his spot all year... averages 11 disposals and hasn't kicked a single goal. Saints fans reckon he'll line up on Byrnes or Varcoe which suits us to a tee - they will tear him up with pace. To be honest I can't see what sort of player Baker's best suited to - he's small, slow and won't hurt you offensively. I remember seeing Eddie Betts carve him up earlier this year.

McQualter has improved a great deal this year fpm. We cannot afford to let the guy snag a couple of goals on Saturday.

regards,

REB

I agree that he's a much improved player and a very accurate kick at goal.

But for a midfielder he averages very few possessions (14 this year) and will be assigned a run with task against, I think, Bartel.

This is in contrast to all of our midfielders bar Ling.

They are carrying quite a few defensive players in, i noticed the Saints were struggling with scoring against the Doggies and im thinking they will be trying desperately to keep us to a low score due to a lack of confidence in kicking a large one themselves.

That said,

Adelaide played a better player on Chapman then anyone of those listed in fpm84's post, Dempster is a strange inclusion indeed and i really can't see which player he can take that he can nullify? And all it takes is Chapman to kick 4 in a half and odds are its game over.

Id be worried if we were carrying that many defensive players, because if we clamp down on NDS and Hayes, that leaves them with almost zero midfield creativity.

Creativity is exactly the word to use for our team selection this week, we are not unlike yourselves, in that we have many players that can play different roles.

Also, I am curious why this sudden assumption that we are suddenly incapable of scoring. We kicked 9 last week because that was the required amount to win the game...

You've kicked 12 and 9 your last 2 games against defenses weaker than ours.
Do that on Saturday and you lose...simple as that.

We kicked 14 against your defence in round 14 :p

Seriously though, I am just saying that we are capable of kicking bigger scores, but the assumption out there is that we suddenly can't.

Looking forward to the game very much, I think it's only appropriate that both our teams battle it out as a fitting end to the year, it's going to be an absolute cracker. :thumbsu:

I'm really happy to see an unchanged Cats line up. I think the forward line functioned very well last Saturday and had great balance with Hawk/Ottens/Mooney working well with Chappy and SJ and with Travis and Byrnes adding some venom but not getting in the way of the big guns

Great decision by the Club. And it seems like it's been maturely handled by all concerned. Well done Stokes

The Demptser inclusion is unexpected. Lyon must be saying "it's going to be raining and hailing so we'll lock you down and win it 8 goals to 6 in a slug fest".

Early goals are going to be massive in this game

Ross Lyon loves defensive teams, last yr everyone bagged him cause he wasn't attacking enough, but coming from sydney he can see the value of defense cause of the apprenticeship he did under Paul Roo's. Mark Thompson knows this and will love to pick apart there zone and defensive structure. I think Zac Dawson is the weak link and we should be attacking through his player, he has looked a bit shaky, so we should try exploit this, if its hawkins on him all he needs to do is what he did against collingwood a couple of times and we will score, (Palm the ball to the runners). Also Saints love the loose man witch i dont think will worry us at all as we like to hit up a lead up forward in the square (loose man usually floats around the 50), and we will just kick over the top of him. so i think we will win by 26pts

I think Dempster will play back and go to Stevie J..

As good as the saints defense is at the zone and running off etc, there actually quite beatable one on one, which means if the cats can get it in clean and quickly you would back our forwards one on one...

I dont think St kilda had a match up for stevie J, Gilbert was probably the most likely, but he is better suited to a so - so player so he can run off and rebound. We saw Brad Johnson get the better off him a couple of times in the second hald last week..so I would think lyon wants dempster to sit on SJ all day.
