Once again I couldn't give a crap what stats. You reckon he will be in the team, that's your opinion. But if you're judging who to pick in defence on number of kicks then everyone has become to engulfed in the world of dreamteam and supercoach points.
If we use stats as a guide then Joel Bowden would be first picked in the backline.

I understand what he's getting at though.

25 Nathan Bock touches are better than 100 Joel Bowden touches for starters and secondly with the run he generates from the backline combined with his strength and awareness he's the complete Key Defender. There's not a backman in the competition I'd pick ahead of him right now if I had a choice. In my mind if Bock plays the next 10 weeks in the same vein of form there's no way he can be kept out of the AA CHB position.

Anyway it's a good thread and you'll never please all of the people so keep up the good work.

I agree, that Bock will overtake the others on current form. He is definitely the best CHB when playing. He has proved that over the past two years. I'm only questioning his selection in the team if it was done now. The way I rank players depends on how many games they play. If it was 1 or 2 maybe but Bock has missed 4 so he is behind 2 or 3 others at the moment. But over the past 4-5 weeks he has closed the gap.

Jackson has been a standout for the Tiges this year, no doubt. But to say that based on the 1st 12 rounds that he is more deserving of an AA spot ahead of Marc Murphy is pure nonsense.

Mark Murphy 2009
Average Disposals 25.3
Average Marks: 4.7
Average Tackles 4.5
Average Contested possesions: 8.25
Average Clearances 3.8
Average Inside 50: 4.3
Goals: 16 (average 1.3)
As well as at least 3-4 BOG (or close to BOG) performances.

The only area that Jackson is ahead is tackles (by 0.5%)

Murphy has been one of the AFL's top 10 damaging offensive mids this year and his seasons form should not be compared to a negating tagger type mid IMO.

Crap, my bad. I was thinking of Robert Murphy.

Im moritified and bewildered so few have Shannon Hurn on a HBF. Hes by far and away the best HBF in the league. Id have him wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ahead of Cox, LeCras as Eagle most likely to be in the AA team. He beats his opponent every week, is probably in the top 5 kicks in the AFL. VERY strong overhead and his pre draft weakness his pace is no longer a problem as evidenced by his job on Nahas last week

The smallest bloke in the league, in his first season isn't that significant.
I'd have Cox, LeCras and Selwood before Hurn from an Eagles point of view. Drummond, Goddard and Enright definitely ahead of Hurn. I moved Davey into the defence category because he has played off the HB line a lot this season, so he would be ahead as well. Hurn would be be in a group with guys like Duffield and Salopek. He has been good but not standout AA material.

I meant more the fact he outpaced Nahas a few times which is quite a feat. That little bugger is fast.

As far as defending goes, quite a few teams have ended up tagging him with a defensive forward. He kept Betts quiet, Stokes and Ebert too but mostly alot of teams have played him close attention and have tagged him in recent games. Collingwood and Geelong put defensive forwards on him in recent games.

Id rather Hurn then 5 Adam Selwoods to be honest. Hes far and away had a better year than him. Id have Hurn leading our best and fairest so far. Definetly had a better year then Enright. That I can guarantee

No, Enright has been better than Hurn.

You can not be serious. Hurn is ok but there are plenty better.

As for beating his opponent every week... Rhan Hooper gave him a bath.

Umm what. Rhan Hoopers opponent was David Wirrpanda. Voss even mentioned in his press conference after the game a direct game plan was to give the ball to Wirras opponent in Hooper to make him more accountable. Hurn played on him in the last 10 minuted. I remember being extrememly angry at the time that it took so long for Wirra to move Hurn back onto Hooper and left Wirra on him for so long.

Hurns only had about 15 goals kicked on him all year and kicked 3 himself according to what they were saying on the radio after the Richmond game

Just thought I'd post up my squad:

Craig Bolton (Sydney)
Aaron Davey (Melbourne)
Josh Drummond (Brisbane)

Brad Sewell (Hawthorn)

Mids (16):
Gary Ablett (Geelong)
Simon Black (Brisbane)
Matthew Boyd (Bulldogs)
Dean Cox (West Coast)
Nick Dal Santo (St Kilda)
Lenny Hayes (St Kilda)
Chris Judd (Carlton)
Hamish McIntosh (North Melbourne)
Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn)
Leigh Montagna (St Kilda)
Marc Murphy (Carlton)
Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood)
Aaron Sandilands (Fremantle)
Joel Selwood (Geelong)
Dane Swan (Collingwood)
Jobe Watson (Essendon)

Forwards (12):
Jason Akermanis (Bulldogs)
Jonathan Brown (Brisbane)
Paul Chapman (Geelong)
Leon Davis (Collingwood)
Brendan Fevola (Carlton)
Daniel Giansiracusa (Bulldogs)
Adam Goodes (Sydney)
Shaun Higgins (Bulldogs)
Steve Johnson (Geelong)
Mark LeCras (West Coast)
Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda)
Cyril Rioli (Hawthorn)

Really struggled with forwards, was reluctant to include guys like Fev or Buddy who are near the top of the coleman but I haven't rated their form that highly (ended up with fev anyway due to lack of stand outs). Also wasn't sure about guys like Cyril and Gia but again no one else really stood out except maybe Porps.

Lose Hurn for god sake.

Wirra played on Rhan Hooper.

Hurn has come back well from his broken leg last year.

He would be leading our B&F this year easily.

heh maybe I am being influenced too much by his match vs Richmond (thought he was BOG) but I do think he's had an outstanding season. One of the most damaging kicks in the league and hasn't had many goals kicked on him whenever I've seen him.

who would you have instead?

Not easily. Selwood has been pretty consistent. Cox and LeCras have had their standout games. Glass had a good patch around the Hawthorn game but has been a bit inconsistent since.

Hurn isn't miles off. As I said before, on a HB flank, Drummond, Goddard, Enright and Davey are certainly ahead of him. Then their are guys like Salopek (faded a bit), Duffield (probably not defensive enough), R.Shaw (faded a bit) etc. He is probably in a group with all of them. C.Morton deserves a mention because I think he has been very good in an average side. Gilbee thereabouts, but nothing special. Newman, O'Brien, any of the other Geelong defenders. Even a few of Geelong's midfielders have spent a fair bit of time off the HB flank. Hurn isn't a standout, but apart from the first 4 players I mentioned, none of them have jumped out.

How I rate the midfielders at the moment (not including Goodes, Davis, Higgins, Goddard or Davey, because I might have them in the forward or defenders category).

1. Montagna
2. Ablett
3. Judd
4. Hayes
5. Dal Santo
6. Selwood
7. Sewell
8. Pendlebury
9. Boyd
10. Murphy
11. Mitchell
12. Watson
13. Bartel
14. Swan
15. Edwards
16. A.Selwood
17. S.Thompson
18. J.Bolton
19. Power
20. Kirk
21. Stanton
22. Jackson
23. Black
24. Winderlich
25. Sylvia

I'm probably forgetting someone, but they would all definitely be ahead of Picken. I'm sure there are others as well. I'm not trying to shoot you down by saying Picken is no chance, it's just that realistically he wont make it.
joel corey?

I have Corey in my team, but he's been below par this year.
Montagna is no.1# surely after his 30 + match winning game last Friday?

He will get in if he comes back this week. His form is so consistent I can garuntee it, almost.

Rischitelli was on Wirra in the second half.

Watch it again.

The commentators even made a point of Hurn and Hooper playing on each other when they kicked a goal each in the space of 2 minutes.

Regardless, Hurn is behind a few players in that spot, that is clear.

No crows? Guess I cant really put anyone in there either maybe except Edwards.

Sewell isn't a defender. He is good enough to be in the midfield squad. Maybe same can be said for Davey. Franklin, while no certainty for the team itself, is definitely in the squad. Would drop Gia for him. Not sold on Hurn, not sure who I would replace him with. From my club, would suggest Maxwell honestly.

that's the thing about the squad format though, back in the day you'd squeeze Voss on a HFF or Bucks in the back pocket because although they'd play there only 2-3 times a season, it was better to include them than someone who had a worse season but played the position full time.

Even now with the squads we still see it with Brent Harvey in the forwards despite being an almost full time mid. So I put Sewell in defenders because a) he can play HBF well and has in the past and b) he's having an AA standard season but is behind a fair few mids, it would be unfortunate if he missed out because of that. I'd rather have him in defenders, and a fringe mid like Watson or Pendles in the squad than a guy like Duffield.

As for Maxwell... yeah, nah. Been okay this season, had some good games and some poor ones but has not been a standout in the back half (you're the first guy I've heard mention him). Plus I think 4 squad members probably reflects the standard the Pies have been at this season.

Finally when I did the squad I was suprised I didn't find any room for players from either Adelaide team, because I rate them both, but none really deserve it. From the Crows Porplyzia, Bock, Thompson and Edwards were the ones I considered (in that order) and a strong finish to the season from any of them should see them in the squad (I'd expect the first two to make it, Thompson is a bit inconsistent and I'm not sure if Edwards has any improvement left)
