2010 AFL Grand Final St Kilda vs Collingwood 25/9/2010

I wouldn't be so confident about next week. Collingwood players just played their first grand final and now have the experience we went into yesterdays game with. They also won't murder the ball like that again.

We won't have gardiner.
That's what I was thinking, one of our main advantages going into the game was grand final experience and underdog status.

Then again I would expect an even bigger game from Riewoldt next week.

Personally I am bitterly disappointed, to get literally as close as possible and not win I couldn't believe it. I guess if we can win next week I'll forget all about it but if not it will be even more disappointing than last year.

We may not have Gardiner, which would be a big blow with the form he is in but at least we won't be a man down for half the game like we were yesterday.

Assuming McEvoy will come in for him if he isn't fit for next week. Think Geary or Steven may be a chance to come in too for Eddy who I thought looked a bit out of his depth at times.

While Maxwell was lost for words at the end, and bless him for it since hearing him talk is tantamount to hearing fingernails on a chalkboard, I don't think he understood the flow of the game in his bitching for extra time considering we had the run of play from half time onwards and a fe wminutes more would have led to a more than likely St Kilda score (rushed or otherwise).

Would he then be thinking that extra time was a joke and it would take "that result" for the AFL to wake up and have a replay next week instead?

Should have stuck with his address to the boys in the rooms with "I dunno" as it might have made him look, dare I say, more intelligent.

As they say poor kicking is bad footy, and for all the things Collingwood did right in the match their achilles heel as always is their forwards can have a day when they can kick 4.21 or 21.4 and you dimply dunno what one it's going to be.

I'm not going to say we deserved it, because we didn't as we didn't win it, however, they left the door open and we graciously walked in and tried to rob the place. Sure it wasn't a 1970's esque comeback, but generally speaking, Aussies love an underdog and hey love a comeback by an underdog which we were in this match and by half time.

I also wouldn't say it's absolute hell for a Saints fan, a fair chunk of us have sat through '97, '09 and now '10 part 1, a fair chunk of us have watched and own the '66 game as well as subsequent finals series. It's inherently a 44 year wait, why would we be bothered that we may have to wait 7 more days?

I might be in the minority here, but in seeing the stats with 62 I50's to 35 and seeing a draw as a result, I am very happy to be coming back next week, and I am very happy for it to be called a draw this week.

I'm like Lenny in regaining my voice, I pretty much had to visit the can during every interval as I was riding every bump and shitting myself when the Pies went forward, but hell, nothing we can do about it, I'm happy to wait 7 more days to get the premiership instead of whinging about unchangeable elements.

/thread.

this sums it up for me.

we should have been 8 - 10 goals down at half time. the game should have been over then

they choked.
we drew that game.
they lost it.
plain and simple, they choked and let us in the door.
I think our club is in a better headspace than them.

shud probs be happy considering where we were at half time, but personally i am shattered. wud give anything for a comfortable win next week!

apart from McEvoy for Gardiner, will there be any other changes?

Jack Steven for McQualter ? I thought Eddy was harder at the ball and looked better than Mini yesterday

I doubt it. Mini had 10 tackles was great.
Only changes will be through injury.

Bit worried about next week. We have now lost our edge from last year's pain because now Collingwood also have it.
They have more room for improvement in their players and have more depth so could make changes that result in them being fresher.
We may have given away a few of our secrets.

The upside for me is that hopefully they will have lost a bit of confidence and will be under even more pressure under goal.
Also from the way both sides reacted after the loss I dont think Collingwood could come back and do what we did after half time.
We had 1 man short for a lot of the game and would have won from even more dominance in the last quarter stoppages if Gardiner was fit. Jolly did well.
Hopefully whilst other players may be worse off for fitness, people like Gram and Dal can recover better and lift their game. Although I don't see how they will be fitter next week after that match.

Huge effort by the boys especially playing 1 down after half time. I am feeling really good about next week. Collingwood are first half specialists. If we are ahead at half time we will run away with it. GO SAINTERS, this is our year! Lenny Hayes back to back norm smiths :thumbsu:

Like has already been said while Mini didn't get enough of it, he still had 10 tackles so he won't be dropped. I wouldn't be surprised to see McEvoy as the only in.

Not sure about that, Collingwood still haven't experienced the real heartache of a Grand Final loss, nor have our boys got that Premiership they're starving for. The experience may help them, but they weren't the ones struggling to settle early in the game, they arrived like they play Grand Finals every week.

But really i don't know what to think, you can mount arguments for both teams in a lot of topics. Going to be a really bizzarre week. If we can settle in earlier in the match, and actually bring our game before half time..

Props to Cougar for his pounce on Didak early in the 3rd i think. Was huge. That's why you never mess with a beast.

Anyone else worries about dal and grammy? Dal only played 70% of the game which is pretty down on his usual time and he was quiet... and gram looked like an injured player imo.. he was ordinary.... wonder how they will pull up...

Also Kosi and Blake rucked because we rolled the dice and said theres no tomorrrow.... how are they going to pull up after doing that for the first time all year...

Going to be tough on all the players having to back up from such an intense, physically draining game. Hopefully we can recover better than they do.

They had a few players struggling by the end too, Didak and Pendlebury looked to be struggling a bit with injury along with a couple of others.

I think our players looked to have a bit more petrol in the tank at the end than they did. Probably a shame it didn't go to extra time as I think we would have rolled over the top of them.

Who has more upside? We had Milne, Peake, Mini, Dal, Gram all well down... Peake and A Mac looked to be over awed by the situation......

But can we keep Didak, Pendlebury, Swan that quiet again? There 3 best players were well down but they were still dominating inside 50s. Our backline yesterday nearly deserved the Norm Smith as a collective group. Fish and Gwilty were amazing.......

Also Dawson was very good... got some good spoils and mopped up well... And didak started the game off really well until Zac laid a huge hit on him... Didak went quiet after that....

I believe we can do it, we have the belief and they will take a lot out of the way we fought back.. but shit Goddard and Hayes played like there was no tomorrow and came away with nothing.... Can they do it again?

OH my its going to be the longest week ever. I need a quick solution and banging my head against a wall isn't one of them

This is how I saw our players. Give or take 0.5.

Hayes – 9.5 – Nothing needs to be said. You won’t find a better individual effort than his last quarter.
Goddard – 9.5 – Everywhere for us. If we won from his mark/goal he would be in at least the top 3 best moments ever.
Fisher – 8.5 – Played 100% of the game and was a real general down back as he always is in big games. His marking overhead is as good as Maxwell and Lake.
Gwilt – 8.5 – Along with Fisher was awesome. Took his game to another level yesterday. Crucial with his big body and pace, bursting out of defence.
Montagna – 7.5 – 11 tackles and 4 Inside 50’s, was excellent in the clearances in that last quarter. Looked spent the whole game really gave it everything. Still some improvement in him though.
Schneider – 6.5 – great goal in the first quarter and his second half was great. Didnt get much of a chance in the 2nd quarter. Stood up in the tackle beautifully to get it to Gilbert for a goal in the 3rd quarter and showed real class and composure in the last. 1 tackle though would want more next time.
Jones 6.5 - Did everything he was asked. Executed his handballs well in defence, 9 tackles and stopped whoever he was on pretty well. Swan got some good clearances in the first quarter on him though.
Riewoldt – 6.5 – Didn’t quite perform as well as I had expected. High standards and was double teamed but needed to kick that goal in the 2nd half can’t remember when. Did some good 1 percenters though that set up goals and was very unlucky the ball held up for Maxwell to get the heroics rather than him.
Ray – 6.5 – Great job against Swan but really cost us with the 50 metre penalty. Was a disappointing act.
Koschitzke – 6 – His effort in the last quarter was amazing and was clearly gone. Kicked a fantastic goal and was more than serviceable.
Dal Santo – 6 – Also has high standards and definitely improvement to be made. 8 tackles is a great effort by him. Was poor in the first half but lifted after half time especially in the clearance work.
Dempster – 6 – Shut down whoever he was on. Did a great job on Didak especially but turned it over in the first quarter to cost us a goal and let Davis get the goal in the last to cost him some points for me.
Gilbert – 6 – Great move to put him forward the main reason would have been his tackling ability though and did only lay 1. Struggled with his disposal at times but made that 3rd quarter goal look easy. Expect more next time.
Blake – 6 - Probably got the wood over Brown keeping him goalless and having 3 times as many hitouts. 6-6.5
Baker – 5.5 – Did his role basically perfect. Was clearly instructed not to kick it and shut down whoever he was on. Pity he wasn’t on Davis when he kicked the goal.
Milne – 5.5 – So close to the fairytale. Got our first goal which was great and then his last quarter goal was exceptional. Wasn’t sighted for a lot of the match but you cant expect much more I’d basically give him 2 points for every goal. He just needed that last one to bounce for him.
Dawson – 5 – Did alright on Cloke but didnt have many successful 1 on 1 contests. Cloke could have made him pay more.
McQualter – 4.5 – Didnt really notice him but laid 10 tackles which is a great effort. Took a great mark in the first quarter. Hopefully can get a goal from him next time.
Peake – 4 – A player who might have done better than most people thought with a shut down role but his disposal wasn’t that good, missed Milne in the first quarter which got rebounded for a goal. 4 might be a bit harsh.
Gram – 4 – Safe to say he has some sort of an injury problem. Disposal wasn’t great and wasn’t seen for lots of the game. Perhaps they just gave him a shut down type role instead though and there were plenty of Pies players who didnt play well.
Eddy – 4 – Caught holding the ball, was frustrating but it was outside 50, wasn’t seen that far down after that. A few plays later he helped turn it over again which was very frustrating but did some alright things in the last quarter, putting his head over the ball and was unlucky to hit the post.
Gardiner – 2 – Obviously injury is the main reason but didn’t do anything before that and Jolly got the opening goal. 10 hitouts so I gave him 2.

Was going to do Collingwood but it is hard to judge. I would be biased to St Kilda because you don’t notice the opposition role players much.

Thought we did well in the first quarter to be 1 goal down. It felt at the game that they were dominating and to be 1 goal down after they had a couple of unlikely goals from Didak and Thomas was a good result. Second quarter was terrible. Absolutely smashed in everything, was unacceptable. If Cloke got 1 of his 2 last minute shots it would have been over. Third quarter was better. Got lucky again mainly from Thomas’ wild miss. Riewoldt missed one as well and it was classy play that got us back in it.
Last quarter was incredible. Gwilt and Fisher down back, Hayes in the middle and Goddard everywhere were just ridiculous. Should have had the win that was worth waiting 44 years for but in the end it was just 2 teams who don’t know how to win a Grand Final:eek:. Seems to be a good way of putting it. If there was going to be another GF draw it was always going to involve at least 1 of us.
Too hard to tell who is better off next week. Barring injury and suspension I think whoever wins next week is well deserved. The whole team including coaching and medical staff will play a bigger role than ever but whoever loses isn’t deserved of that either.
I feel like I am in purgatory. This week will be strange.

dal and gram looked injured and were.

grammy probs shouldnt have played. the extra week may help or hinder these two.
oh, and its ******* BS if the AFL do not award medals to everyone who was in both matches.
hear on abc its ONLY next weeks 22 that get medals.

thats crap.:thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

The game was a good reflection of the season.

Collingwood win their games early - and while we played well in the first quarter to stay close, they ran all over us in the second quarter and should have put us away.

St Kilda win their games late - we do not allow the opposition to run away and will use our superior fitness and attacking bursts to go for the kill when they start tiring. We should have won the game in the fourth quarter, but credit to Collingwood, they appeared very tired and it must have hurt losing the lead for the first time 5 minutes from time and yet they managed to dig really deep to rescue a draw.

absolutely amazing game! I haven't been that excited since our 2006 GF! (and of course our 05 GF...) I actually felt like I was a Saints supporter for this game lol! Best of luck next Saturday, you guys a full of heart and character and I love how you play for eachother! Pull an eagles and win after the yr after you lost - it's all the more satisfying!:thumbsu::):D

Clearly u guys deserved to win, cant believe goddard got pipped for the Norm Smith but hayes did play well. Do u guys go for another midfielder and keep blake and kosi in ruck or bring in mcevoy??
Do it for Australia, Go Saints!!

Gardi won't come up so macca will come in for him as a straight swap.

maybe a change with an armo?

I watched the last 10 minutes on 7/2 this morning and one thing that you don't notice on the TV is what the crowd did after the game. The siren went and everyone sort of looked around at each other and then, slowly, everyone rose to their feet and gave a standing ovation. It was quite awesome.

Some blokes behind us told us when there was 24 seconds to go, so we knew a bit before the siren sounded that it was going to be a draw. It was quite a revelation. Last year, I remember thinking "I'd rather lose than have to come back next week", but I was OK with a draw this time around. Better than a loss, and now all we need to do is pop out next week to pants the filth and hold the cup up.

I must say, this GF will get a bit lost in the mists of time because there's another game next week, but it doesn't deserve that fate. What an epic.

Two normies in one year for Lenny? Now, THAT would show the AA selectors.

Just listening to the replay on the ABC and the commentators were speaking afterwards and said that McEvoy may be no guarantee of coming in for next week since the combination of Kosi and Blake in the ruck seemed to work quite well. I guess by doing that we could bring in an extra runner for Gardiner.

Still think McEvoy for Gardiner will be the most likely change though. I think Lyon would want the security of a specialist ruckman. If Kosi got injured, which is always on the cards, it would leave us with just Blake in the ruck. Picking McEvoy also gives us the luxury of using Kosi more as a key forward.

like for like, with macca for gardi.

gardi may still yet come up but if he doesnt thats the change that i think ross will make.

Thought I might jump in here and share my two cents. What a cracking game ey!?

FWIW I was damn thankful the siren blew when it did. I felt the Saints were definitely on top and am considering it lucky we get a second crack.

I felt vindicated when I jumped on our website to read Maxies comments:

"I think we really dodged a bullet, and St Kilda probably played better than we did," Maxwell said at the Westpac Centre on Sunday morning.

"I'm just now grateful that we've got another opportunity to make amends.

What an exceptional performance (from both teams really). It was great to see you guys b@lls to the wall and see the maturity and strong bodies come through. Dare I say it, St Kilda earnt some serious respect from me this week (I'm not the biggest Saints fan, but that went a ways...)

I suspect that this week the winner will be whoever escapes injury and which ever team recovers better from this clash of the titans. Our conditioning staff are very good so I would suggest we will recover strongly. How does every one rate the Saints' ability to bounce back this week?
