The Rest who Knows?

Maybe Jackson Trengove for Rising Star
Bernie Vince for Brownlow
St Kilda for the flag
Riewoldt for the Coleman

The biggest issue I have with most of these lists is how little movement there is in them.

They will say things like "this team will improve a lot!" and move them a whole 1 spot up. Or this team "is on the slide" so they drop 1 spot.

What we do know is that (based on historical stats):

1) At least one new team will enter the top four.

2) At least two new teams will enter the top eight.

St Kilda
Geelong
Western Bulldogs
Collingwood
Adelaide
Lions
Carlton
Essendon
Hawthorn
Port Adelaide
West Coast
Sydney
Kangaroos
Fremantle
Richmond
Melbourne

Simply apply those two factors to the above end of the home and away season ladder.

I reckon the bookies have got it about right.
Geelong, St Kilda and the Bulldogs will be the contenders.
I do however believe that Hawthorn have a better chance than Adelaide.

For mine, a terrible prediction. Adelaide bottom eight , Geelong eighth and cats fans happy LOL. The Bombers will be happy to just make the eight again next year, let alone a GF.

i can not think of one reason why st kilda would finish top four and geelong would slip, given the saints are in a worse off position with the age of their players.

geelong have Tom hawkins, Harry taylor, Joel Selwood, travis varcoe to improve into their third and fourth years. st kilda as matthew lloyd pointed out, have no genuine tallent under the age of 24 who can improve.

2009 was st kildas year, everything was going right for them, injury wise, they had a game plan that was far more advanced then any other sides with the frontal pressure and the lions cage, just like geelong and hawthorn had in 07 and 08, this was st kildas best chance of a flag, and they blew it, i can not see them having the same run next season.

injuries will surely come into play, and their game plan will be scrutinized and picked apart over the pre season heavily.

they will be up their in the top four, but ones common sense would tell you that their is very little room left for improvement in this club considering its age and game style that jumped the competition this season will be less effective once analyzed.

If tom hawkins improves to a 50-65 goal kicker next season, and harry taylor takes his game to another level in his third year, i can not see geelong dropping off at all, only getting better.

Next year is going to be intriguing, there are I think at least 6 teams that could push as the premiership contender. My top 6 could all win the flag next year, plus in previous years there is usually a club outside the top 8 who becomes a contender.

1) Adelaide
2) Geelong
3) Bulldogs
4) Hawthorn
5) St. Kilda
6) Collingwood
7) West Coast
8) Carlton (if Fev is still playing for them. If not, will not make the 8)

9) Port Adelaide
10) Brisbane
11) Richmond
12) Essendon
13) North Melbourne
14) Sydney
15) Fremantle
16) Melbourne

selwood is your only certain young gun. hawkins did have a good finish but i'm not convinced he can kick 60 goals a year. varcoe although did have a good quarter in the gf, not impressed with him as all. not too many top quality kids at the cats, but you cant really expect that with the success over 3 years. i agree with you about the saints though. if they could not win it this year with everything going right, they will struggle to win it next year

Most of the Saints players still have at least another 4-7 good years in them. Goddard, Riewoldt, Montagna, Dal Santo, Fisher, Kosi, Ball, Gilbert, McQualter, Ray, Jones, Schneider, Gram, X Clarke, R Clarke and Dawson are all in an age bracket or 23-28. Hayes, Baker, King, Gardiner and Blake are the only ones over 28, Hayes seems to be getting better with age(2009 his best year). I admit we will have a problem in the rucks as I'm not sure how well King and/or Gardiner can go next year, but we have McEvoy coming through who has shown good signs - which leads me to my next point. We have a lot of young promising players coming through, Armitage, Steven, McEvoy as I mentioned, Heyne, Geary, Cahill and Lynch + Goddard, McQualter, Ray, Gilbert and Dawson are all aged 24 or less.

I can't see any reason why we won't make top 4! Of course teams will adapt to our gamestyle and general improvement from other clubs will make it more even then 2009, but we should still be good for top 4.

Besides, Geelong aint' exactly a young side. Milburn, Harely, Scarlett, Mooney, Ling, Ottens, Wonjcinski, Chapman, Corey, Enright, Hunt and Rooke will all be 28 or over during next season.

I'd say the Saints have a good 2-3 more years before their premiership window closes, where as the Cats have 1 maybe 2 more years. Of course I'm not going to bag the Cats as at least they've done something with their chance - winning 2 out of 3, it's up to the Saints to do soemthing with theirs!

Ball will be traded, Clarke is a spud and the GF showed how lazy and soft he is and lets be honest Schneider and Ray are not top shelf

Sydney, that's a big call

No Hall, Mick O, Jolly, Crouch, Leo Barry, it will be a real changing of the guard and unless they trade well IMO they will really struggle

Clarke's attack on the ball and intensity can't be questioned, it's his skills that let him down. Certainly not soft. I never Schneider and Ray were top shelf did I? I was implying that they're young and still have plenty of years left in them.

Sydney will not make top eight
Geelong wont be on top, Adelaide or St Kilda will
expect essendon to be top 8, very good youth coming through
Bulldogs will start to slip
Collingwood will fall dramatically
carlton to just miss the 8
brisbane will be good next year, but a ageing team could see them fall in a few years

Any theories/reasons behind these predictions? IMO unless Essendon improve dramtically on their defensive game I can't see them making the 8 next year. Only one change to the 8 next year - Bombers out; Hawks in. If it wasn't for Lloyd's shoulder the Dons probably would've missed the 8 this year and while I think they can improve their game next year it won't show on the ladder.
