Its one thing to say the Hawks member numbers are juiced by current success and the Tassie arrangement, its another to say they are small though.

At worst, you could possibly argue at their low points they revert to being a mid sized club, but with kids now coming on from their golden era of the 80's, even this is a stretch.

No way in hades Hawks are a small club anymore, and to say so is laughable.

I agree. To be 100% honest, there is Collingwood & West Coast at the top of the pile. Then Essendon, Hawthorn, Carlton, Richmond, Adelaide & Geelong in the next tier of bigger clubs in no particular order. Each one of these clubs has had ups and downs, but never have they ever been small clubs.

Our memberships aren't juiced either, they just cost less than other clubs because to compensate for missing home games in Melbourne that are played in Tassie!

it would also be the 4 or 5 game tassie membership is priced to suit. but other vic clubs will have 3 game memberships also.

I don't mean juiced as in dodgy, but juiced as in there are factors boosting them above the norm (but for understandable reasons):

1) you are a flag favourite, and strangly enough that usually means you get your fence sitters to pay up. As such, I'd be expect you to be optimising your numbers right now (fence sitters signing up, and churn rate low). When you return to the pack, some comparative drop off would be expected.

2) The Tassie deal means you do get some people buying a membership to get access to seats. Reality is some of this will walk from the club when you return to 100% time in Melbourne. I'd expect you to retain some, but not most. This is not saying its a rort, or they are not real members, just that the incentive to reserve a seat with a membership is a strong pull, and without it many won't see the value.

These factors are not Hawks specific, but would be relevant to any club in the same situation. Unfortunately for you guys, the Tassie deal is a unique situation, so its easily misunderstood. FWIW I expect the Kangas to get a similar rise once they get some traction in Hobart.

Yep definitely. We have around 8 or 9k Tassie members I think?? So when you take that into account with our cheaper pricing structure for Melb based memberships, that's why our membership revenue is a little low for a such a large membership base.

There are still premium memberships. I had the 17 game Kennedy Club membership which I pay around $520 for, and recently got it upgraded to the 17 game Legends membership which is around $800 for the year. Though there are only a limited number of these, as they have absolute premium seating on level 2 at the G.

Most of the standard packages the club offers though are cheapish. Around $200 to $350 for 17 game members I think.

If we do return to Melbourne full-time, we will def lose some tassie members no doubt. Without the tassie members last year, we would have been on around 46k or so I think. If we do pull out of tassie, I would expect our Melbourne membership prices to rise again, as members will be getting more home games in Melbourne. So I don't think it should affect our bottom line.

In relation to members dropping off when on-field performances drop, you would expect a little bit of that. But hopefully it's not a drastic drop. I don't think it will be to severe, as the club seems to have really gotten its shite together recently re: marketing, and have really built a strong brand. Even when were shite in 2009 and 2010 we still had massive membership numbers. If we are shite for a decade then there will obviously be a drop-off, but I hope/think it won't be too much.

Your 'Adult 19-game. package is only $255, which is very cheap. Compare that to our 'Access 16 Game' package, which is $291, and the Pies list 'Adult Home and Away Game' package, which is access to all 17 games in Melbourne, at $330.

Certainly offers an explanation to the revenue figures.

Yeah $255 is cheap for 19 games. Usually it's been 16 or 17 game packages in years previous. We have a silver and gold package for 19 games with a reserved seat and it is $345 for silver and around $400 for gold. I suppose it's fair compensation for our members since we only get a small number of MCG home games. I mean, we have "replacement games", but they aren't the same if you know what I mean.

Def explains the membership revenue figures.

Legends sounds roughly (some bits better, some worse) like our 3121 membership, which this year is $925 for 15 games.

Yeah just had a look at that one. The only reason I upgraded to the Legends one for 2012 is that they had "ran out of level 2 allocated seating for the Kennedy Club membership". Meaning I would have to sit on level 1 in M51 or something. So being the sucker I am, I upgraded to the premium membership and forked out the extra $280 or so to get level 2 reserved seating  Ah well, at least it's going to a good cause ;)

I just get General Admission, freedom to sit where you want and easier to bring friends along. (Although Gabba GA is probably different to MCG)

75 thousand members....

Love the optimism and good on him for trying.

Ahh yes I remember. Well, you have to aim high. I remember when Kennett said he is aiming for 2 premierships in 5 years and 50k members. Well we have had 50k + members for a few years now. And we were a kick away from playing off for a 2nd premiership this year. I don't see an issue with having grand ambitions.
