Draft Review 2012 - Revisiting the 2012 AFL Draft

Give Sydney credit for this one but since coming into the side Timmy Membrey has kicked 20 goals in 7 games and is becoming a very important forward for the saints. Taken at pick 46 he's really starting to become comfortable and moving up the board

Credit to the Saints for chasing after him.

To give an idea of how effective he's been since he came into the side, he's kicked more goals than Rory Lobb, Darcy Moore and James Sicily from 5, 3 and 5 less games respectively.

He's kicked 4 less goals than Tom Hawkins from 4 less games.

And 3 less goals than Jeremy Cameron from 1 less game.

As far as I can tell, running, kicking and pressure acts are the three most important parts of your game plan. I'm reluctant to put Macrae up there with Viney, Hunter, Stringer, Wines until he adds that reliability by foot.

But Viney not having that reliability is ok?

Only because his inside game is so unique. If Macrae is going to star on a wing for a (hopefully) flag side that likes to hit balls into the 50 with either length or precision - he needs to improve that side of his game.

I repeat, i'm not saying he's not a bloody good player. I just think he could do more.

Membrey's well and truly on track for a 40 goal season and is actually a serious chance to nudge 50 if he keeps going at this rate, even though he missed the first 5 games.

Not only does he hit the scoreboard, but he also tends to be high up in our score involvements stat (eg. a couple of 12's so far from his 7 games), so he's a big part of both kicking goals and setting up shots at goal for others. His kicking is excellent not only for goal but also around the ground.

Nick Stevens (who coached him at Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup) said he should have gone top 10 in this draft and it's starting to look like he might have been pretty much on the money with that one.

I remember he was touted around the top 15 but I can't for the life of me remember what made him slide

Wasnt there doubts about his size. Not really big enough to be a key position, but too big and not agile enough for a small?

Either way he is coming along bloody nicely for the saints. Forward line is looking really promising

I thought he was gonna be another Jesse White. A trier but not much else.

Much better

I don't think Membrey will end up being a to 10 player in the draft, but you could see for all money that he was a talent and St Kilda's gamble is paying off big time. Bruce and Membrey are 40-50 goal a year forwards, and they paid nothing for both. An excellent acceleration of their rebuild.

Yeah he kicked more goals in his two years in the TAC Cup than any of Boyd, Patton, McCartin, or Daniher did in their respective two years there (and averaged more goals per game than Patton and Daniher), including 9 in a prelim (and 4 in the grannie, which he captained his team to), but the questionmarks were whether he'd be tall enough to play a similar role at AFL level (he played FF in the juniors), whether he'd be able to adapt to another role and also apparently on his endurance, so he slid a silly amount.

The thing about him is that he's just got very few weaknesses/deficiencies and, like McCartin, is just a "natural footballer", who knows when and where to go to get on the end of the footy, how to time his leads, etc and he's a very strong unit. I think working with Aaron Hamill would also be doing wonders for him, as we need him to play a somewhat similar role to the one Hamill (who played taller than his 184cm) played.

Something else Nick Stevens said about him in the juniors was that he was a better set shot for goal than Fev (who Stevens played with at Carlton), which didn't show up at all last year (when he missed a lot of very gettable goals), but it's starting to show out now, as he's rarely missing his set shots.

One game when he did miss a few though was against Essendon, when he kicked 3.3 (and gave another one off after a mark inside 50), so that could have easily been another 5 (or more) goal haul that day and had we not stopped to a walk well before the end of yesterday's game he could have kicked 6 or more, the way he was going.

I don't think he's a "flash-in-the-pan" type, either, as he was very consistent in the juniors, very consistent in the NEAFL in his two years at Sydney (100 goals over the two years) and played some very solid footy for us last year and some really strong footy in the VFL, so I think he's just doing what he was born to do, week after week, year after year.

This is the draft Freo shat the bed. So far removed from our stellar 2011 draft. Only player is Matt Taberner as our first round rookie draft selection looks like being best 22 in the next 5 years.
Yep freos 2012 draft reminded me of 2010 just a missed chance.

Josh simpson was our 1st pick thathad talent but he had off field problems.

Tanner Smith was our 2nd pick...Had a debut game as a defender in 2013 vs the hawks at tassie. then played his 2nd game vs port in 2015 when we rested our guys. Now theres hope for him as a forward.

Tabs is slowly getting there.

Looks like both WA teams had a shit 2012 draft. If it weren't for Wellingham finding form last year, our whole draft/trade that year would have been shambles. Hutchings and colledge is all what we have have from that draft. Hutchings is nothing more than depth and college will be delisted soon.

Love Garner but injuries have killed him so far. Jacobs probably the best tagger in the league.

Wood will be a monster with another 40-50 games under his belt. Hopefully it's with North.

Tell you what, this draft is coming out fairly well. Only 4 of the top 20 are struggling to impact or are gone, at least 17 other players having significant impacts from the ND (bloody hell Hunter in the 3rd) plus 9 rooks (Zac Williams bottom of the RD the standout).

Viney looking a gun for sure

Would love to see Wines in a well coached team

He was super impressive under Richardson and Walsh

Wines is now overrated. Other kids just needed their bodies to fill out.

Or maybe it's just poor coaching, but he has gone backwards since that final in Perth.

dont think Ollie has gone backwards, our whole team has had a bad year so it affects him, plus he's playing in a team which loses the hitouts due to not having a ruck-man. Im sure most midfielders would love to have maxy gawn tapping the ball to them.

In saying that in the draft Ollie was a ready made midfielder so was thought to have less of an upside/less room for improvement compared to macrae and others (from reading old phantom drafts at the time). Still happy we got him though but most likely is behind a few of the other mids in the draft.

1. Hogan
2. Stringer
3. Viney
4. Grundy
5. Daniher
6. Wines
7. Hunter
8. Macrea
9. Membry
10. Whitfield

I obviously included the 2012 mini-draft as well as everybody had the chance to participate
