Draft Review 2012 - Revisiting the 2012 AFL Draft

I'm sure I'll get called bias for this, but Macrae behind Wines and the other mids is off the pace.

I think he's the best player from the draft after Hogan. He doesn't get the credit he deserves.
It's weird, he is rated highly by some (such as inside the club and the 'Triple M revised 2012 draft') but some others do not rate him at all. I think we will find him as one of the most underrated players in the comp for the next few years to come, which I'm fine with as long as he's ours :)

I don't see any club using a top 5 pick on a ruckman not named Max Gawn and don't understand why so many posters have Grundy so high.

The value of ruckman is at all time low. B grade ruck combinations of Roughead/Boyd and Hale/Mcevoy are proven to be good enough to win a premiership with.

Not to mention while being excellent at stoppages and around the ground for a ruckman. Grundy has shown to be very average as a forward and only middle of the road as a tap ruckman so far in his career.

He's definitely a very rounded player is Macrae. He can play both on the inside and outside quite well which is a plus. I find it quite interesting that some posters on here have questioned Macrae's kicking which could be why he's not rated as highly as some have. Whenever I've watched him, the precision of his kicking range long and short as well as his excellent vision have always stood out to me. Anyway, credit has to go to Simon Dalrymple and his recruiting staff for their drafting and recruitment over the past few years which has contributed to your Grand Final side, in particular this draft in getting Stringer, Macrae and Hunter as a F/S which has ultimately payed dividends.

Macrae pulls off some absolute ripping kicks. But every now and then he'll have a stinker, and given that he almost always takes the riskiest option his one stinker of a kick stands in people's minds more than the 10 lace out ones he did before that.

I think you summed him up well. Also a big game player, I thought he was the best mid in the granny after Kennedy.

Yeah I think some of the really good kicks like Macrae who have the confidence to take those risky options will from time to time pull off some average kicks in doing that but like you said I usually see him hit his targets more often than not.

This is an interesting one because there are probably about 5 or 6 players you could throw in a hat and pull out for the #1 spot.

1. Jack Viney
2. Jesse Hogan
3. Joe Daniher
4. Ollie Wines
5. Jaeger O'Meara
6. Brodie Grundy
7. Lachie Hunter
8. Jake Stringer
9. Dane Rampe
10. Brad Crouch
11. Jack Macrae
12. Lachie Whitfield
13. Tim Membrey
14. Zac Williams
15. Rory Atkins
16. Mason Wood

How is Jaegar 5? How do you have Hunter above Macrae? How is Jack Viney #1?

This list is just... so strange.

If Brad Crouch is better than Macrae I'm following the wrong sport..

Jaeger has missed two years of footy, but he was a genuine freak before. Couldn't drop him too much further. Viney was a bit generous I suppose, but I think he's an inside machine; he'd be my first taken in a redraft. Lachie's outside game is better than Macrae's, there are plenty of inside mids going around, there are few genuinely quality outsiders.

I suggest you watch Bulldog games a little more closely.

Ignoring the mini-draft and resetting the picks to where they were.
Daniher's F/S bid stays where it is. Viney's comes in with Melbourne's pick @ 14
1st round:
1 (GWS) - Brodie Grundy
2 (GCS) - Jack Martin
3 (MFC) - Jesse Hogan
4 (MFC) - Ollie Wines
5 (WB) - Jake Stringer
6 (WB) - Jack Macrae
7 (PA) - Zac Williams
8 (BL) - Dane Rampe
9 (RFC) - Lachie Whitfield
10 (EFC) - Joe Daniher (F/S bid)
11 (Carl) - Mason Wood
12 (GWS) - Martin Gleeson
13 (GCS) - Rory Atkins
14 (MFC) - Jack Viney (F/S bid)
15 (NMFC) - Nathan Hrovat
16 (Freo) - Lachie Plowman
17 (Geel) - Nick Vlaustin
18 (Coll) - James Stewart
19 (Coll) - Ben Kennedy
20 (Adel) - Sam Mayes
21 (Coll) - Kamdyn McIntosh
22 (Dogs) - Lachie Hunter (F/S bid)
23 (Syd) - Jackson Thurlow
24 (BL) - Harrison Marsh

On reflection -
Pies did very well. Grundy isn't the best player from this draft, but he isn't far from it, and to have that in a ruck is a good pick up.
What might have been for the Dees with Wines in that midfield.
A couple of rookie draft defenders in the top 10 for me.

Jaeger was the mini-draft prior with Brad Crouch. So need to swap those 2 out
Jack Martin & Hogan were in this one.

different drafts for one thing. jaeger's pre-injury is ahead of Macrae, but if you had the pick today, it would be lineball
Macrae may not be consistent, but he doesnt have the injury cloud over him. But Jaeger has a better ceiling imo.

Viney is a gun. if he wasn't a F/S, he'd be top 5.
2 KPF's in Hogan and Daniher and a high potential ruck in Grundy makes the choice difficult.
Always going to be a what if draft for Melbourne
2/3 top 5 kids ain't bad. but Viney, Hogan + Wines in one hit....

I think you may be the only one still not to get it.
O'Meara and Crouch went in the mini draft as underage. If not for that they would have been in the 2012 draft with everyone else born in 1994 and earlier.

Hogan and Martin were born in 1995, so were not draft eligible until 2013.

So averaging the following disposal counts
26+ in 2014 with 8 times 30 and above and only 3 times under 20
26+ in 2015 with 5 times 30 and above and 3 times under 20
27+ in 2016 with 8 times 30 and above (including 2 finals) with no games as low as 20.

What would you define as consistent and point me to which player has been this consistently good in their 2nd to 4th years of football.

Jack Martin way to high. Could continue his improve, but he has alot of work to catch up on the top 5.
I like Grundy, but I wouldn't have him in the top 3 though

They were a concessional pick only.
They were not draft age until the next year, so should be considered with 2013.
They were drafted in 2012, not 2013 and every team had access to them

Where's your list then, smart guy?
There would not be one single Bulldog follower who would rate Hunter ahead of Macrae on their output to date.

Hunter has had 1 good season, while Macrae has been very good for 3 seasons.
Does not take a very smart person to see that Macrae should be rated ahead of Hunter. However, we are happy to have both and Jake Stringer from the same draft.
