2012 Trade Period - Your clubs performance

Geelong and Collingwood were the standouts for me. Also think Hawthorn and West Coast were proactive with their window open, with West Coast especially fulfilling their needs. Essendon did okay too.

Broughton was also a decent pick up for Gold Coast.

Go on, tell me how 13 other clubs had better trade & FA periods than Essendon.
I guess it's a win if Monfries was worth less than Koby Stevens. o_O
I'd give Carlton an NA - Didn't participate apart from aiding Russel find a new home

Personally I don't mind Carlton remaining quiet this year.

New coaches often give the list a year before making huge changes. Also getting players to come over seemed to cost relatively high in terms of picks/contracts.

Overall I think it's a bit shallow assessing the trade period without taking into account the drafts.
This.

List spots are tight with Carlton to take just one player in the rookie draft.

There was nothing out there that really interested us with GC wanting a compensation pick for Caddy.

We weren't going to overpay for Lynch by getting in a bidding war with Collingwood. We need to get games into Casboult, Rowe, Mitchell and McCarthy next year.

We're not going to chase list cloggers and average players like Richmond who still finished below us last year.

Pretty happy with the last 3 years overall, Richmond have gradually managed to fill some gaps without giving up a whole lot.

2012
Out: Graham, Pick 50, Pick 74
In: Chaplin, Knights, Edwards, Pick 40

2011
Out: Morton, Pick 14, End of 1st Rd Comp Pick, Pick 37
In: Maric, Morris, Pick 15, Pick 26, Pick 32, Pick 79

2010
Out: Tambling, Collins
In: Grigg, Houli, End of 1st Rd Comp Pick (traded in 2011 for pick 26 [2011] and 32 [2012]), Pick 47

If 2012 turns out as well as 2010 & 2011 then it's a big success. Hard to say right now - this time last year most Richmond supporters were complaining about giving up pick 37 for Maric.

I'm unhappy about Rivers.

I'm delighted to get rid of the soft head brigade: Morton, Moloney, Gysberts.

Martin was exposed horrendously against Fremantle when Jamar went down and I won't miss him.

As long as Dawes plays his role I'll be content. I'm not expecting much from Byrnes, Rodan and Pedo to be honest.

Cause it can sit in the bank for 2 more years. When a club is trying to reduce the number of players they have the last thing they really need is another pick that year.

In 2 years that pick might be a late first round pick depending on where Geelong end up, the draft might also be a lot weaker a few years from now. The only reason they wanted that pick is because they believe Geelong is going to fall to pieces within 3 years.

I'm sure it's been discussed elsewhere at length but Melbourne got shafted with FA compensation.
Byrnes is worth nothing really so Moloney and Rivers for a 3rd Round Pick? End of 1st round IMO.

I think our compo was so low because of the short contract length of J Riv and Beamer at their new clubs. I was expecting a 2nd round pick though. That definitely would have made our trade period look a lot better.

I will be surprised to be honest i dont think it will get that messy a Fine is the most probable cause.

.... and then into the pre-season draft? Will be very interesting to see what picks clubs would be willing to use on him. Doubt he would get down to Sydney's first pick anyway. I also doubt that he'll be able to nominate his salary.

I guess it's a win if Monfries was worth less than Koby Stevens.

Monfries was a free agent robinson.
HE went for pick 48 as a deal with port so that wouldnt affect there compo for pearce and chaplin.
Should have gone for free instead we got pick 48.
Another win.

WEST COAST
In:
Sharrod Wellingham (Collingwood), Jamie Cripps (St Kilda), Cale Morton (Melbourne), draft selections 46 and 62
Out:
Quinten Lynch (Collingwood), Koby Stevens (Western Bulldogs), Lewis Stevenson (Port Adelaide), draft selections 18, 41, 44

Traded out 18 + Stevens + Stevenson + 44 for

Wellingham + Cripps + Morton + 46

Very happy with that. Covers the loss of Stevens and Swift with better quality and more pace.:thumbsu:

Two of these players have dreamt about playing for the Eagles since childhood.:)

IN: Lake, Anderson, 29, Spangher
OUT: Gilham, 21, 41

Solid in's and didn't have to give up much. Our free agency would of been better if we had of gotten a second rounder for Young and then a third rounder for Murphy, but it's out of our control.

B+

Got Wellingham at a good price who will add the right mix of attributes and experience to the midfield with good scope to improve
Got Cripps for not much who is a talented and versatile young player
Got Morton for essentially nothing, who has talent, but some critical deficiencies

Lost Stevens who I rate as a good prospect and didn't get much in return (not complaining as it was fair value)
Lost Lynch, which can be covered OK as we have plenty of marking forwards
Lost Stevenson who is a solid depth player, but again we have a plethora of rebounding defenders.

Those actually are some very good moves when you break it down like that. Improved the list each year whilst retaining good draft selections. :thumbsu:

On the last point, I assume you meant Wellingham and Cripps? I'd suggest Morton as a youngster would have been an Eagles fan aswell.

Wowee, a confident mob you guys are. You guys got a pass mark at best. Spangher has become a spud since he left WC (not that he was much better here). Lake will break, and then 2 players decided to ditch the 'family' club.

As far as West Coast, I'll give us a good C+. Nothing great, nothing bad. Another solid performance by the most professional club in the league.

Lucky you clarified yourself over Spangher! Kidding yourself if you think your final statement is the truth.

People just focus on the bodies traded, just because we didn't trade in anyone doesn't make the trade period a failure, we maintained our premiership squad and top line young up and coming players, traded out a considerable amount of fringe list cloggers, retained our first round pick and improve our position in ND with increased 2nd round picks.

All in all whilst not a sensation but certainly not a D failure in the scheme of things and our list and salary cap management team for the future.

Clubs like Hawthorn, Geelong, Collinwood & to a lesser extent West Coast have really improved their list this trade period. I think they deserve an A.

Sydney hasn't improved but if they land Tippet in the draft it will be huge.

However you fail to understand the quality of some of the highly rated youngsters who are still on the list outside of the top 22 at end of season, Mitchell and Rohan both top 10 draft picks. Not only this they have retained there first round draft pick and improved their 2nd round picks in the ND.

Trade period is about improving your list with a view to the both your current premiership and the future and this is exactly what Sydney has done by trading and delisting list cloggers as well as significantly improved its salary cap position which can be used to ensure it secures the cream of its young brigade and secure the services of Tippett or any other high profile FA target next year.

I really like Richmond's drafting result. Added to the number of afl standard players without losing anything, and improved our draft standing from 53 to 43. Now has what 4 picks in the top 50, only GWS (who already had a ton of early picks and used the mini-draft to crowbar picks from teams) have more picks in the top 50.

In essence, Richmond improved their depth and elder players AND managed to keep onto its picks and try and further pick some talent. Bloody hell Richmond, why didn't you do this whole fund the footballing department and hire proper staff thing before? I'd give it a solid B+

Hawthorn has me jealous of their late snatching of Anderson though.

Richmond were very targeted, with Chaplin a smart signing. Knights hasn't done li anything since '09, but he's a risk worth taking.

I really like what the Hawks, Eagles and Pies did, while anytime you get big fish for free it's fantastic. Melbourne were horrible.

But I was thinking, Sydney's weakest spot is a tall target up forward and you still lack one plus it looks like you have lost lpaenty of depth in the backline with Spangher and Heath gone. I mean Reid is okay but he is not that monster, intimidating forward that all big clubs have like Cloke, Tippett (I know you chased him) and Franklin. I still feel that if you got a monster forward you would be formidable in 2013 and because you failed to get Tippett (though not entirely your fault) I gave you a D.
