Who do you see as a full-on tagger in Rd 1, if not T-Hunt?
Not arguing, just asking.

Bartel or Kelly in that line up. I think they are better match ups for Mitchell who doesn't offer a lot of outside run.

ITs tough all right. The MC have their work cut out for them.

Got to say Dan, that given he gets back to 100%, Menzel's name should be black. The kids a star!

There's always a fine line. Rivers & Varcoe only just made lock status, Menzel only just missed out. I'd have him as a lock by the end of the year (if he remains fit) but rd 1 is his first official AFL games since two knee reco's. I therefore have him only tentatively in the team. Good chance to be the sub I reckon.

Yeah, possible, but I think Kelly might stick closer to Sewell, and would prefer Bartel floating across half back.

Overall, though, I think I'm pretty much in agreement with everything you say about the line-ups.

Injuries and suspensions always excepted.

i think if we are to win the premiership we need to play menzel from day 1 and get him as much game time as possible and fit and firing come middle of the year end part

hopefully he gets a full pre season and can come good round 1 regardless!

I did have him in the team starting on the field, just that it wasn't a certainty.

From footscores report we know the surgery went well. So he'll be right to do most fitness stuff now but he'll likely not do competitive stuff til after Christmas. At 8 months general public are generally cleared to play anything. At 7 months a professional footballer should be ready (it'll be 7 months first week of Jan).

There's 22 games of football to play before finals, plenty of time to get his touch back. If I was the strength and conditioning coach i'd be pushing a slow approach which allowed him to get a bit more leg strengthening work in. Premiership aren't won in April, we need him firing for Sep/Oct.

Haven't seen Caddy play to be honest but obviously hear good things. Lets not count McIntosh as a sure thing yet...Needs to get on the park. Pick up I'm most excited with is Rivers, a great defender who's been playing with minimal support for the last 10 years, he'll slot in nicely for us and can play anywhere in the back 6.

So for me

B Mackie Lonergan J.Hunt
HB Enright Taylor Rivers
C Corey J.Selwood Duncan
HF S.Johnson Hawkins Menzel
F Varcoe Podsiadly Stokes
IR West Bartel Kelly
Int Vardy Chapman Christensen Stringer

Next: T. Hunt, Horlin-Smith, Murdoch

It's not a certainty but I'd expect McIntosh to be a lot better off with injuries now. The achilles problem is sorted and he was carrying the PCL injury for a few years. Getting a LARS PCL will stabilize the knee more and make him a lot less injury prone. Wouldn't be suprised if he doesn't sustain a significant injury at all next season. He will definitely be ready for rd 1. Rehab for the surgery he's had is around 3- months so he's another who will be cleared to do everything after Christmas.

As long as he can do an Ottens and make sure he's fit and the business end of the season I don't really care how many games he plays. :thumbsu:

Really tight for spots now that Hmac and Rivers have joined.

B: Enright, Taylor, Rivers
HB: Guthrie, Lonergan, Mackie
C: Duncan, Christensen, Bartel
HF: Varcoe, Vardy, Johnson
F: Chapman, Hawkins, Menzel
R: McIntosh, Selwood, Kelly

I/C + Emerg + Other chances: Caddy, T.Hunt, Pods, West, J.Hunt, Smedts, Stokes, Corey, GHS, Stringer, Murdoch, Motlop, Kersten, Brown, + pick 15.

Obviously Pods could easily line up at CHF instead of Vardy. I'd also say West and T.Hunt are almost certain to play from that long list of possibilities, due to their second ruck and tagging roles respectively. Other than that I really don't know. It's really tough trying to work out what would be best for 2013 (and the future).

Pretty good problem to have though.

Just demonstrates our extraordinary depth. The list management at this club has been top notch. The staggering of the retirements has been well done - even at the end of 2013 we now look reasonably well placed to cover the likes of Chapman and Corey assuming they both retire.

You would assume that, injuries permitting, that we will see a lot of player rotation in and out of the side during the year. Scott will be eager to get games into GHS, Smedts, Kersten, Murdoch and Guthrie. It will be interesting to see whether J.Corey is surpassed by the likes of Caddy or GHS at some stage during the year. Similarly Vardy with Pods. Now that we have McIntosh there is going to be fierce competition for the ruck spots as well. I can see Stokes being pushed out by the likes of Smedts, Motlop or Menzel. Hopefully both Varcoe and Menzel can have injury free years and add a bit of x-factor to a team that looked very one-paced and predictable in 2012.

I think Trent West would be a very nervous about holding his position in the team for next year. We can't play all three big fella's, so does he hold out Vardy?. The big O will be hoping Dawson Simpson asks for a trade or he is Gooooooone.

They didn't go through with the HMac deal for him to play reserves......He'll play first ruck, first game barring injury.

Correct. Same with Caddy too.

The real question with HMac will be will they try and play all three rucks, with Vardy effectively asapermanent fwd, at Pods expense? Or does one of West/Vardy sit out. It is a tricky one because Westcould do really well being freed up as a no2 ruck, but on the other hand the club really rateVardyand will probably want to develop him in the seniors when fit.

I guess they will rotate through the pre-season, then for the Hawthorn game pick the "form" player. Same applies for the midfield....so many options....

Good spot to be in during our "re-build" hey PO?

Since we're likely to only add one new player (an early draft pick) to our list in 2013 and considering Rivers, Caddy and McIntosh are certainties to play senior football, I wonder what the odds are for Kersten, Bews, Hamling and our draft pick to all crack the seniors, which would mean that our entire senior list by the end of 2013 had played at least one senior game. That would be pretty remarkable.

You're right MC....and whats more...I think its a big chance to happen. I thought Bews was very good in the VFL Gf and Kersten is a certainty to get game time. Hambling I havent seen, but he must have plenty to offer given his place in the draft.

Team in two years look good

B: T Hunt, Taylor, Rivers
HB: Guthrie, Lonergan, Mackie
C: Varcoe, Christensen, Murdoch
HF: Duncan, Vardy, Kersten
F: Motlop, Hawkins, Menzel
R: McIntosh, Selwood, Caddy

I/C: West, Kelly, Smedts, GHS, Stringer, + pick 15.

(Watch for a possible Simpson and Brown trade this year)
WOuld hate to loose Burbury or Walker!!!!

AFL
B: Enright Lonergan Rivers
HB: Mackie Taylor T.Hunt
C: Bartel Selwood Duncan
HF: Varcoe Vardy Johnson
F: Menzel Hawkins Chapman
FOLL: Macintosh Kelly Christensen
Inter: West Caddy Smedts Motlop

VFL
B: J.Hunt Bathie Guthrie
HB: Corey Brown Bews
C: Murdoch Stringer Horlin-Smith
HF: Stokes Walker Burbury
F: McCarthy Podsiadly Kersten
FOLL: Simpson Cowan Schroder
Inter (from): Stephensen Eardley Sherringham Hamling PICK 15 Blicavs

Josh Hunt is the ‘23rd’ man, it was between West, Chapman, Motlop, Smedts, T.Hunt and Caddy to miss!

My take on the draft is that we delist Gillies and Stephensen, retain all our rookies bar Simpkin and also keep Brown. With our second draft pick (Pick 73?) we redraft Orren Stephensen.

On paper that surely is the strongest VFL side we have ever had! Just look at the interchange...

Some people have criticized the way your Football Club have gone about the free agency/trade period by picking up two 28 year olds who by many people thought that those two players seemed to have passed their best.

Geelong saw this free agency/trade period to strengthen and improve their playing list and they did it beautifly. You identified a couple of slight weakness in your team, by recruiting a ruckman in McIntosh who at his best is close to an A grade ruckman, if not an A grade ruckman, who has shown in the past great athletisism and mobilty around the ground to compete against he best rucks in the comp. Also a gun defender in Rivers who when he is firing is in the top line of CHB in the comp. You've got Lonergan at FB and Taylor at CHB, this is where the recruitment of Rivers becomes a master stroke, he frees up Taylor to play more of an attacking role and at times also allows Rivers to play the third tall and leave his direct opponent and influence the contest down back against the opposition tall forwards. Having Lonergan, Taylor, Rivers and Mackie will now make it all the more difficult for the opposition to score against Geelong. It's a good backline formation to have.

Bloody well done on your smart recruiting! :thumbsu::)
