There is also a small chance that Cockatoo will go to Geelong, which would then mean Durdin would likely get to us.

"In what would be something of a surprise, Nakia Cockatoo has also been linked to the Cats' pick 10, while Kyle Langford continues to be talked about as the Crows' pick 14. That could see the versatile Jayden Laverde get through to Essendon's pick 17."

13. FREMANTLE

Jake Lever (Calder Cannons)

H: 193cm W: 84kg

Key defender

The Dockers desperately need a key defender and Lever is seen as a more accomplished prospect despite rupturing an ACL. Was seen as a certain top-five pick pre-injury.

The twist: The Dockers want a big backman and have long been fans of Hugh Goddard, but late mail suggested Lever had pipped him.

14. ADELAIDE

Hugh Goddard (Geelong Falcons)

H: 196cm W: 94kg

Key defender/forward

The Crows traded backwards from pick 10 to 14 but will still get the key defender they want. Goddard is a Ben Reid-style swingman with a strong intercept marking and rebound game.

The twist: The Crows want a backman but have also tracked Jayden Laverde and forward Kyle Langford closely.

Just had a look on the draft machine. Serious talent there on display. It would have to be an exceptional player to make a go at AFL with a height of only 167cm these days. Barry Cable and the Krakouer brothers were this height but that was 20 years ago.

If you think his draft footage is good, take a look at his highlights package from the under 18's championships earlier this year: 27 disposals, eight tackles, three goals and 11 score involvements - best on ground by a mile. The kid is a freak, see for yourself!

As for those people worried about his height - this kid developed his jaw-dropping, one-touch, corner-of-the-eye passing skills because he had to - if he didn't get rid of the ball quickly and to advantage, he'd be flattened. He's been playing against bigger, faster, stronger, heavier players his whole life, how will AFL be any different?

Count the number of (potential) goal assists he pulls out of nowhere in the above video... ('cause I lost count) ...then look really hard at his disposals - almost none of them are ineffective, nearly all of them advances the ball, effects the play and creates opportunities.

This guy may be small, but he's no seagull - frankly I rate him as being the most potentially damaging mid in the Draft. If he is still there at our last pick IMO we must grab him.

I must admit that was an awesome highlights package. Could be a good value late pick.

7 GWS: CALEB MARCHBANK

(Murray Bushrangers, 7/12/96, 193cm, 85kg)

As a defender, Marchbank reads the play well and attacks the ball. As a forward, he can do the same things.

The rationale: If the Giants need one thing, it's more depth in their key defensive stocks. Marchbank would offer that, and is a versatile player who could also swing forward.

The complication: See the names above - it could be Hugh Goddard instead of Marchbank taken here, with Jordan De Goey and Peter Wright still in the mix.

8 GOLD COAST: PETER WRIGHT

(Calder Cannons, 8/9/96, 203cm, 100kg)

A 203-centimetre forward, who can cover the ground and also jump into the ruck.

The rationale: He's way too good to pass up. The Suns have a number of tall forward/rucks, but they're not exactly easy to find.

The complication: Smart midfielder Liam Duggan is very much in the mix here and if both are gone the club could look at whoever has slipped through. Jarrod Pickett is a chance if still available.

9 COLLINGWOOD: DARCY MOORE

(Oakleigh Chargers, 25/1/96, 199cm, 91kg)

Athletic, competitive key-position prospect with long arms, quick feet and an ability to play at either end.

The rationale: The son of Peter Moore cost pick 9, but might have gone around 5-9 in an open draft given the Western Bulldogs offered pick 5 for him in father-son bidding. It was a fair price to pay.

The complication: None. He's into his first pre-season already.

10 GEELONG: SAM DURDIN

(West Adelaide, 6/6/96, 197cm, 87kg)

Versatile tall player who has spent time in the ruck, in defence and in attack. Highly competitive, and reads the play well.

The rationale: The Cats have long been fans, and could do with adding another young developing tall to their back-line group. Durdin could play there, and might also end up in the forward line or doing a bit of both.

The complication: Peter Wright, if available, may come in ahead of Durdin, with Jordan De Goey and Hugh Goddard other possibilities.

11 WEST COAST: LIAM DUGGAN

(Western Jets, 11/12/96, 183cm, 75kg)

Smart, trustworthy onballer with a nice left-foot kick. Clean on the outside and has improved his in-close play.

The rationale: He's too good to pass up on. Duggan might not have the express speed of other players, but he is smart, composed, has strong endurance and is good at pretty much everything. He's a safe bet and will add to the Eagles' midfield depth.

The complication: Jayden Laverde or Lachie Weller could also go here, with Nakia Cockatoo a much longer shot.

12 RICHMOND: COREY ELLIS

(Western Jets, 9/10/96, 184cm, 74kg)

Reliable, disciplined midfielder with possibly the most accurate kick in the draft.

The rationale: The Tigers want to keep adding to their midfield, and Ellis is one of the most efficient onballers in the draft. Never loses his cool, goes quietly about his business and gets the ball where it needs to go.

The complication: Liam Duggan and Lachie Weller have both been linked to the club. Jayden Laverde may be considered if available, and the same goes for Peter Wright.

13 FREMANTLE: JAKE LEVER

(Calder Cannons, 5/3/96, 193cm, 84kg)

A fiesty defender who hates being beaten, looks out for his teammates and reads the play well. A leader.

The rationale: The Dockers have been on the look-out for a key defender. Lever has missed the year because of a knee reconstruction, but is an aggressive, smart player who helps set up play down back.

The complication: Sam Durdin is likely to go here, if available, with Caleb Marchbank a huge chance too. Liam Duggan is a midfielder who the Dockers could grab, if he makes it this far. Is this too soon for Daniel McKenzie?

14 ADELAIDE: KYLE LANGFORD

(Northern Knights, 1/12/96, 190cm, 73kg)

A unique player in this group: a natural marking forward who can also go down back and move nicely through the midfield.

The rationale: The Crows are big fans of the versatile Langford, who has looked the goods in various parts of the ground this year. Can play as a marking forward, and could also develop into the sort of tall wingman everyone is after.

The complication: Brayden Maynard, Jake Lever, Caleb Marchbank, Sam Durdin and Jayden Laverde are other names to consider here.

15 GOLD COAST: NAKIA COCKATOO

(NT Thunder, 23/10/96, 186cm, 86kg)

Big, powerful midfielder with a huge burst off the mark.

The rationale: The Suns are in a good position to nab both Wright and a talented midfielder, given their well-laced picks. Cockatoo missed most of the year with a foot injury but is a dynamic midfielder. The club is looking to increase its midfield group and share the load, so he'd fit in nicely.

The complication: Kyle Langford, Jayden Laverde and Jarrod Garlett could also land here, if different things happen higher up the order.

16 NORTH MELBOURNE: DANIEL McKENZIE

(Oakleigh Chargers, 17/5/96, 183cm, 77kg)

Dynamic midfielder with good game sense, a big leap and plenty of speed and endurance.

The rationale: The Roos are big fans of McKenzie, and will know he is highly unlikely to be there at their next pick. That means picking him here.

The complication: Corey Ellis, Nakia Cockatoo, Caleb Marchbank, Lachie Weller and Jayden Laverde are others in the mix here.

17 ESSENDON: JAYDEN LAVERDE

(Western Jets, 12/4/96, 189cm, 80kg)

Smart, classy and versatile player who can do the unexpected.

The rationale: This is the point where Laverde becomes hard to resist, given his talent. He's a tall, versatile running player who can carry the ball. That's what the Bombers need.

The complication: Jarrod Garlett, Touk Miller, Tom Lamb are all players who could come into the mix here.

18 SYDNEY: ISAAC HEENEY

(Cardiff Hawks, 5/5/96, 186cm, 84kg)

Ferocious, forceful midfielder who runs well, marks overhead, loves a contest, leads by example and is simply very good in almost every imaginable area.

The rationale: That, at just pick 18 under academy rules, he is one of the biggest draft bargains in recent memory.

The complication: None. He's into his first pre-season and well settled, having spent the past few years in the Swans' academy program.

19 CARLTON: LACHIE WELLER

(Southport, 23/2/96, 182cm, 77kg)

Composed, classy midfielder who likes to move with the ball and can kick goals.

The rationale: The Blues are after some midfield run and polish. Weller would give them that, and come up with an incredibly professional attitude.

The complication: There are a number of others the club could consider here, who offer similar things. Touk Miller and Brayden Maynard are two, but might make it to pick 28. Same goes for Tom Lamb. Could the club grab 21-year-old West Australian onballer Blaine Boekhorst here? It's a chance. But expect Caleb Marchbank to go here if he's still on the board.

20 ESSENDON: JARROD GARLETT

(South Fremantle, 18/8/96, 180cm, 69kg)

Super-quick onballer, who also has the endurance to keep going. Determined, hard working and a confident player who takes the game on.

The rationale: The Bombers look reasonably well placed at either end of the ground, but could do with one more key forward. But they are huge fans of Garlett who, like Laverde, can move the ball.

The complication: Should Hugh Goddard or Jake Lever still be on the board, they would have to seriously consider picking either. Touk Miller, Tom Lamb, Connor Menadue are others in the mix and Lachie Weller is another big chance if available.

21 ST KILDA: HUGH GODDARD

(Geelong Falcons/Melbourne Grammar, 24/8/96, 196cm, 94kg)

Versatile tall who reads the play well at either end of the ground and could develop into a genuine swingman. Super professional.

The rationale: That, at this point in the draft, he's too good to leave there. The Saints are still looking for a bit of everything. Goddard - a cousin of former Saints star Brendon - is someone they could develop at either end of the ground.

The complication: The Saints also have pick 22. Tom Lamb, Touk Miller and Alex Neal-Bullen are other players who could come into their thinking. They'll snap Lachie Weller up if he's still there.

IN BOND WE TRUST

I will be gobsmacked if the slime take Duggan if Weller, Cockatoo or Laverde are still on the board. He just screams safe, vanilla, slow. Surely they have enough of this type? They are crying out for x-factor.

Sounds like the experts have us taking Lever.

Heard Mark Evans on SEN this morning talking about how the AFL has asked clubs to be a bit more discreet in regards to who they are taking prior to the draft to add to the intrigue of the day  (was asked about pick 1 but talked about the draft/clubs as a whole)

Is anyone concerned about Lever having already done an ACL?

His footage is awesome but that was a year ago. I can't see how we can possibly pick him up. One more ACL and could be career over. Seen we just offloaded Tanner with body issues because we couldn't wait for him to develop and now we could be picking up another.

If Emma Quale is right & Goddard slipped to our pick I couldn't see us passing him up.

One would assume the medical staff have done their due diligence. As one of the "experts" pointed out, Freo would have been watching this lad all year.
We took Apeness last year who had an ACL so we have form in this regard. If it was me though I would pass on him.

Incredible highlights package. The little bloke has cult hero written all over him

I'm not sure you guys realize how good Lever is, yes he's short for a new age key defender but with a wingspan of 205cm no doubt he'll grow another inch or two. He captained Vic metro as an underage player which is absurd, leadership beyond his years. Had a MRI showing the cartilage around his ACL is pristine. A few examples of ACLs prior to being drafted; Joel Selwood, Michael Apeness.

He's Michael Johnson creative coming out of the back line coupled with excellent 1 on 1 work. Darcy Moore (Collingwoods pick 9) thought Lever was playing in the TAC grand final cause he stood opposed to Moore and stared him down during the national anthem. Moore said he "thought snake was playing!". That's Luke Hodge like aura. He completed a triathlon a week or two ago. Kids a gun. If we draft him we'll have a great player.

No one doubts that he is a gun. But if we take him we will have two first round draft picks in two years who have had ACL injuries before being drafted. With our bad lucks with injuries and first round draft picks, it's risky. For us two take him I hope the club believes that he is a lot better than the other players still available. But it will depend how the draft pans out. It's quite likely that Durdin, Wright, Goddard and Marchbank could all be gone at that point.

Based on his highlights package if that was last year & there was no ACL there would be no way on earth we would get him with pick 13. I guess just cross our fingers and take the punt.

The more I see and read about Lever, he looks like an absolute steal at 13. They will have given him a thorough health check, so I wouldn't think there is any additional risk associated with the ACL.

We'd be very lucky to get him and he looks like he'd fit in beautifully in the purple.
