AFLW 2024 - Round 9 - Indigenous Round - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
We are taking Smith back through the rookie draft, so they say. Do we have a rookie draft pick available next Wednesday after we take Smith ?
So pretty much what happened at St Kilda with Ross Lyon is happening again at Fremantle. The long-term future is being compromised in the hope that we can have short-term success.
Drafting a midfielder like Weller who can have an impact next year instead of drafting someone like Lever/ Goddard who will be there to take the reigns when Pav and McPharlin retire and be the cornerstone of our next era.
Relying on signing a free agent who comes out of contract next year and - going by the law of averages - is unlikely to exercise their free agency option to make this draft period a success is fool's hope.
And, as far as using the rookie draft as an avenue to address our KPP needs - The players are available in the rookie draft for a reason, they are about 1 in 50 chance of making it as A-grade players. If it was that easy to just draft an A-grade KPP in the rookie draft then every club would have that mindset.
The reality is that pretty much 9/10 elite KPP's come in the first round of the national draft.
Against who though? In the finals we struggled with Dawson and Silvagni but not necessarily with tall forwards. We will struggle with Dawson and Silvagni there if both MJ and Mcpharlin aren't there. I'd be more than willing to trade our first rounder (or another pick) for a key defender next year if the right player is available. (24-27 year old and not a spud) We need a leader back there in the post McPharlin and Johnson era.
Rance would be ideal as he'd cost nothing but there are other options. We need richmond to play terribly next year to get him though I reckon and even then we will be amongst most Victorian clubs and probably the Eagles in trying to get his signature.
I think the problem here in regards to this draft is the key defender there won't be ready to be the players we need them to be quickly enough. We didn't get the key defenders we needed in 2012 (except maybe Smith) and might need to pay a price for it next off season. The fact we were looking at someone as average as Shoenmakers says a lot about the position we are about to find ourselves in. It's not a disaster by any means but something has to be done in the next couple of off seasons imo.
Losing Walters (46 goals in 2013) for most of the season hurt a little in the goals department. When he was back we kicked 110, 106, 105 for the last three games (he kicked 1, 3, 3)
In the three games before that we kicked 79, 83, 60 - he gives our forward line unpredictability and would be part of having that extra 2 goals when tag teaming with Ballas
Hawthorn had the advantage of being one of the leading Victorian clubs in the league when they lured Gunston & Lake, as well as being situated in the sporting capital of Australia and arguably the most desirable state in the country for a footy player. Sydney had an extra 1M in their cap to lure high profile recruits in Tippett and Franklin, we have none of those things.
All the way along the company line has been "It's difficult to lure non-Western Australian players across to Fremantle, so we will have to grow our own". And yet after all this rhetoric we don't seem to be honouring these statements.
Obviously we see the need to add a high quality key defender to the list otherwise we wouldn't have chased Frawley so hard during the free agency period.
I just can't fathom how the club could pass up the opportunity to get a high quality KPP into the club with our first pick and "grow them". Hopefully they do have something like signing Rance as a free agent in the pipeline otherwise it could be the difference between us winning and losing games in a couple of years time.
As in Zac Clarke. LOL.For some unfathomable reason, at the beginning of the 3rd quarter in our final against Sydney Ross had moved Silvagni to Adam Goodes. That's when Buddy went a little crazy until Snos was put back on him. I hope Ross keeps his s*^t together if we make it to this years finals because that move and taking Zac off in the Grandy were mistakes that cost us at important times in my opinion. I have massive faith that if Silvagni can stay fit he will be permanent in our back line and do a great job.
He did play a really good game and Buddy's absence for half the game was why it wasn't a fundamental flogging. I staunchly believe he needs a long run of games and he'll become even better. He really is the forgotten man and in some ways, he's almost stupidly loyal to the Dockers – guy could go to 10 clubs and end up playing 80 odd more games, as an important player, before he retires.Silvagni did a fantastic job on Franklin in the final in Sydney this year. Although Franklin kicked 3 goals from memory two of those were kicked when Longmire moved him into the midfield because he was getting well held by Silvagni and having no influence on the game. Beating the highest paid player in the AFL in the biggest game of the season (to that point) gets the thumbs up from me for Silvagni as being a very capable backman.
I personally rate Sonny well above him for effort, intensity, and that sharpness with his skills, but you'd say Cyril is on par with Son Son and yet that bloke was cooked all year (including the Grand Final) and the Hawks were still head and shoulders above the rest (and ear-length above Sydney).Yep, Walters loss was huge this season. Forget the X-factor he is the W-factor, could of been the difference in a couple of those tight games i.e. Kangas, Geelong..

He's another people just find unfashionable because... he's... not young?
The weird thing with Fremantle is we have three or four players who, if any of them go, just peg us that one or two levels below and we can't recover. It's poor depth and patronisation of the wrong players (ie not enough Duffy, way too much Clarke). The Hawks could have Cyril out, they could have Hodge out, they lost probably the second best key forward in the comp... and they still pulled through.
Whilst guys like A Pearce and Tanner Smith(?) are certainly prospects to slip into our defence as Luke reaches the twilight of his career, Silvagni is the only option I would consider a ready replacement and I expect to see him with more opportunity over the coming season - with Luke perhaps being managed, to an extent. Silva will get his chance - Patience my dear Grasshopper !!He did play a really good game and Buddy's absence for half the game was why it wasn't a fundamental flogging. Watched the Peel vs East Perth opening game of the season last night. He was excellent again.Or tall. Or flashy. Or fast. Very, very competent one-on-one defender though, and has developed his ability to rebound over the last couple of years.
Club is very lucky to have him on the list, and for him to have stuck around.

Had it recorded on my PVR. Not sure why IView isn't available. That's very annoying for you.How did you watch it? Can't seem to find Peel games on ABC iView for some reason.
Looks like the wafl is going to channel seven next year. ABC might have wiped their archives .How did you watch it? Can't seem to find Peel games on ABC iView for some reason.
