Because Matt De Boer is a defensive forward/midfielder and is only ever going to be average. Mark Whiley and Aaron Young are big bodied clearance machines that have shown potential to became great players. De Boer whilst a good player won't improve or become a 30 possesion plus guy. Aaron Young also has above average footskills for an inside mid.

Not sure when Whiley has proven over any extended period that he's a "clearance machine". His clearance numbers this year were based on two games, and he's never had clearance numbers like that in other games he's played. Very small sample size. I'd be getting him for his tagging and tackling ability more than anything else, hence the comparison to a better, more experienced, mature "sure thing" in that category in De Boer.

I have dobuts that Young can sustain similar production in a non-sub role too. If he's as good as you say, why would Port want to get rid of him?

I have to ask, considering you were the only one plumping for De Boer, when has he ever hurt an opponent with ball in hand? Guys like Moore, Young and Whiley haven't had an impact as yet, but they've received a tenth of the opportunities De Boer has.

If he was a decent field kick or could find the footy I could understand where you're coming from, but I just don't know what you see in him aside from a solid body...

It's not as much about him being able to hurt someone with ball in hand, it's about us having a solid, reliable, durable defensive presence through the midfield. De Boer doesn't have a whole lot of hurt factor offensively, but he gets a reasonable amount of ball considering his role (15-17 disposals per game), and isn't a poor user of the ball. Just because a guy primarily plays a defensive or tagging role, it doesn't necessarily mean he's some sort of turnover merchant.

Getting him wouldn't be a sexy or exciting move, but it'd open up space for guys like Pendlebury, Sidebottom and even Adams to do their thing even better, moreso than even a fit Macaffer could do.

It's a moot discussion considering he re-signed, but, IMO, under no circumstance is that the player we need to bring in right now.

Another gap filler is never the answer unless the question is how to become the next Richmond?... As hard as it may be to stomach we're rebuilding and De Boar types provide nothing in a rebuilding phase. In fairness Mitch Robinson has him covered which says a lot!

We had a guy doing that this year and his name was Maccaffer. And I think having a purely defensive player hurt us in the clearances and cut off our supply of uncontested possessions. De Boer isn't even a full time midfielder he spends most of his time as a defensive forward.

Think if we are going after midfielders we should get one that has played a few games.

Well we need Big Bodied Mids and he has the Chance.

His Father is our WA Recuriter

Well I haven't seen him play so I can't really comment on him. In the NEAFL grand final where I saw Tony Armstrong I didn't notice much (he might not have played)

If we're are going after a big bodied midfielder I'd rather get Aaron Young. He's shown what he can do at AFL level.

Not all needed a ruck, guys we missed out on Judd, Nick Stevens, Stevie J and Toney Lockett you would agree they are fair players

You do realise out of all those players you listed, only Judd chose another club over us. Stevens chose Collingwood but was prevented from joining us because his coach Mark Williams refused to deal with Collingwood, Stevie J was keen to make the move over but we knocked him back due to his medical(horrible decision)and as for Tony Lockett he wanted to play for us too, but the board voted against taking him going against the wishes of our Coach and President.

"The deal was “all but finalised”, according to McAlister, saying “Lockett told me in no uncertain terms that he would like to play with Collingwood ... and assured me ... he would give the Magpies value for money.”

Another secret meeting took place with a St Kilda official who suggested that the club knew Lockett was leaving and was prepared to make a deal.

McAlister later said: “(Leigh) Matthews desperately wanted Lockett. Ron Richards and Bob Rose also wanted Lockett and I believed if the coach wanted a particular player, it was my job as club president to try and fulfil that request.”

Sadly, for McAlister, when the matter went to the board, a group of them voted against the move.

McAlister was overruled, Lockett went to Sydney, and the rest is history".

I might be wrong but wasn't there circumstances that may have gone against us? I think Port wouldn't deal with us on Stevens, we actually decided against Stevie J based on where we thought his ankle was at and it suited Lockett to go to a non-traditional AFL state. Judd - well he missed out on the 2010 Premiership because he made a bad choice.
