Because Matt De Boer is a defensive forward/midfielder and is only ever going to be average. Mark Whiley and Aaron Young are big bodied clearance machines that have shown potential to became great players. De Boer whilst a good player won't improve or become a 30 possesion plus guy. Aaron Young also has above average footskills for an inside mid.
Not sure when Whiley has proven over any extended period that he's a "clearance machine". His clearance numbers this year were based on two games, and he's never had clearance numbers like that in other games he's played. Very small sample size. I'd be getting him for his tagging and tackling ability more than anything else, hence the comparison to a better, more experienced, mature "sure thing" in that category in De Boer.
I have dobuts that Young can sustain similar production in a non-sub role too. If he's as good as you say, why would Port want to get rid of him?
