Not sure it's impossible to find players to delist

You would think that this bunch would need to make an impact this year:

Merrett
Staker
Maguire
Paine
Maguone
Golby
Lester
Bourke (Rookie)

I would have to agree with you here on your list. Merrett and Lester would be fairly safe but can understand why.

Would be nice to have a few years with minimal turnover of players for once. Can't remember the last time that happened. It will be nice when we have to start making tough choices about players rather than identifying 6-10 who could be cut. Think we're still a season or two off having some really hard decisions still though.

Can't disagree with a lot of the list above. West may be one who could be looking over his shoulder come the end of the year. Much depends on how Archie is looking come years end I guess.

I know the lions are casting the net pretty far with a couple of kids playing college basketball on the radar too.

The one I know of is 6'8" (playing guard!) who played as a key forward growing up.

Fair enough on the list. Half of them will more likely retire though. Anyone have any info on Mosely? Is he the bloke from Nudgee College?

Some transferable skills on show here.

Young Josh Schache seems a promising tall contested key forward with a good kick for goal. His dad Laurence only played 29 games for us however.

Just to keep everyone up to date but we also have a prospective father/son in Daniel Rendell, Matt Rendell's boy. If anyone has any info on him that would be great?

Just looked at this list and this would be my guess:

Merrett - Another 2 year contract if he gets back to some Full Back Form
Staker - Either curtains or a 1 year
Maguire - A 1 year contract again for insurance. More so if he doesnt play much this year, as his body should hold up better
Paine - Eh...He'd have to break into the side and show something big.
Golby - Re-rookie maybe?
Lester - Should be safe
Bourke (Rookie) - Cant see him getting in over the likes of Dizzy, Clarke and now Harris as well.

Thinking of popping down to watch/photograph the Oakleigh Chargers v Northern Knights clash tomorrow. Any particular players of interest for anyone?

Nick O'Kearney plays for the Cannons doesn't he? If so I think he is definately one to watch.

So irratating, why can't we get a Callum Mills or Heeney.
Because Sydney invest more money and quality people into their academy. They have guys like Tom Harley, Paul Roo's (Pre coaching) and ex star Sydney players being involved in the academy. It explains why they are producing top a grade talents like Mills and Heeney.

If it was as simple and an exact science as throwing money, resources and coaches at the development of these kids then everyone would be doing it and top end talent would rolling off the production line but it's not as simple as that. I think you'll find in Heeney and Mills that they have been top end talent in what ever they would have played as kids.

The FA academies in England are a good example, if it was about money and resources Man United, Man City and Chelsea would have a lot more success bringing through academy players then what they do - but it is Southampton that arguably has the most successful academy players.

That is very true. This is a part of an article about Heeney a month ago

"Isaac's a little bit different, everything he touched he did really well at," Adam said.

"In his soccer he scored 68 goals in 12 games, when they were really young. But then he picked up a cricket bat and played an age above himself in division one up here in Newcastle and his batting average was 216.

"He also played rugby league for the school in a couple of carnivals and they went to Sydney and won some tournament down there with the school and he scored five tries in the final.

"When I say he wouldn't be playing Aussie rules if it wasn't for the academy, he might have been playing another sport."

If it was not for the academy there is no doubt he would be playing a different sport.

Knightmare has posted his views for this years draft crop. One of the more astute draftee observers and gives a fairly good account and also does make changes as the year rolls on. Interesting to see where he rates Keays and possibly a tad lazy with the Lions just taking Academy players. Quite complimentary with where we will finish though!

So is it this year or next year or not sure yet when that dodgy new points for academy/fs bids is due to come in?
We should find out soon. The AFL has gone to clubs and received their feedback and will be delivering their findings.

The way I understand it, and I very may well be wrong, but we would receive a 25% discount on academy kids with the points system.
If this is the only incentive that we receive, then surely other clubs will have to help out financially instead of us completely funding the academy. We can't poor millions into developing these kids of X amount of years and receive 25% off. Its just crazy. If they are going to go down this path, the way the academies are funded are surely going to have to change.

So if came in as mooted Knightmare would have to re do his list based on what draft picks we had left after compensating for whatever positional adjustments were involved ... sounds like fun all around ...

The Lion's have asked for a 40% discount.
