Knocks on a player for their 'size' are always ridiculous. Small player skills are very transferable to the AFL, there are plenty of AFL players who use their small size to their advantage. If the player's size was an issue then they would be less likely to dominate in the TAC Cup where people are generally smaller and agile.

Actually yeah just watched Jade Gresham's draft trumps video on afl site.
If Oliver is gone I'm actually leaning towards him.
Could be both a super dangerous midfielder and small forward. Size might be a knock but he looks a great footballer.
Northern Knights boy too which we seem to like. I dont mind the look of him, seems super quick which is a bonus.

One things for sure it looks like we should get a ok kid at 12

So would everyone here walk away happy if we selected one of Oliver, Bonner, Gresham, Clarke, or Ah Chee?
Im not hugely keen on Ah Chee but any one of those would be very solid for us.
Mate to be totally honest im going to back in the recruting team who do this shit for a living. We can watch a highligh vid or two and think we legit know what these kids are going to be like. Last year most thought Ellis was a reach at 12 but from the little weve seen he looks like a quality addition.

Whilst i have to try and remind myself not to get too carried away with highlight vids I'll just be supporting whoever we select.

What are Clarkes contested possessions/clearance averages? Might justify the 'poor' kicking efficiency. Lets not forget that Cotchins kicking efficiency wouldn't be much better than that most of the time.
And thats just the set shots for goal.:p:D

Bonner's vid is easiest on the eye for mine, would choose him.

(for reference I wanted Dusty and Harper in their respective draft years- break the line and kick long)

Bonner is extremely outside. It would like having one of the lonie twins.

Fantastic kick but poor intercept Mark, can't win his own ball and poor defender.

He either has to develop a shiteload or you have to cover him defensively and also feed him the pill. Personally find his ability to win the ball disappointing for a kid of his size and athleticism

In terms of playing style he looks a lot like Kade Kolojashni, which from all reports FJ was very high on KK in his draft year. So you would think he might also be high on Bonner, but it appears that the lack of intercept marking and inability to win one on ones, has turned FJ off Bonner.

Some sobering insights there! You may well be right, does look very good bursting through the middle and kicking long, but those highlights are all I've seen.

I take it he wouldn't slide to our 2nd pick?

No way he slides, Burton will be top 30.

Wgat would be the risk ? If the injury was last year our medical staff would be all over it and would have intricate knowledge of his current condition.

If as you say he would be top 3 and we are confident with his injury concerns then its a no brainer

I just know how bad the injury was, clubs were so concerned at the combine they basically used Burton for over an hour examining him etc

I'm sure the medical staff would be all over it, but I'm just worried another bit of contact will really hurt him. No chance IMO he plays next year... Despite him back running but he hasn't had contact since the incident so I'm still worried.

Like I said medical staff would be all over it, but I just don't like the risk after such as bad injury.

The difference being for mine was KK already had a lot more to his game, a very good reader of the game so can intercept mark and while not a huge winner of the ball can easily win his own ball.

If you could instil some of those traits to Bonner i'd take him, but KK went at 5 for a reason whereas Bonner IMO will go at 20ish and probably to the Dogs.

Whats the go with Burton? Are teams hoping he develops into a mid or are they hoping for stringer/darling type?

I think Stringer/Darlin type, for me I don't think he can develop into a midfielder. His role is that athletic third tall (maybe a Gunston type?).

I do know however one interstate club who do believe he can move into the midfield in the future- But it has been hard to back that up due to his injury and not playing this year. So i'm sure a couple of clubs would feel he can move onto a wing/high half forward in the future.

Like I've said about, would easily have been top 3 in my mind for this years draft if he wasn't injured. He was really concerned with trying to rush back to play a game at the end of the season, which frustrated a few clubs because they didn't want him to rush back from the injury...

Gresham for me, love the way he plays and love the way he just runs through the middle and keeps linking up. He will be a very good mid.

Wouldn't mind Oliver need that big body mid that stands up in the heat of battle so when Cotchin, Lids and B. Ellis go missing we have someone to support Miles

On Burton, from a scout;

“Last year we spoke about him as the No. 1 draft pick, but now it might be a roll of the dice for clubs and which is prepared to call his name. He has an asterisk at the moment on our board."

Couldn't agree more ...we should be drafting a good FOOTBALLER all this crap about height and speed ...check out Sam Mitchell to see just how ridiculous this don't draft short people shit is

Still keen on Oliver + Collins, but am starting to warm to Gresham. Wouldn't be disappointed with Ah Chee.

Watching Bonner reminded me immediately of Trent McKenzie. Tall flanker with a long left boot.
I notice he didn't participate in any of the draft testing. Not sure what his running is like but for that type of outside plAyer you'd want it to be top class to consider him at 12.

I'm hoping for Burton with pick 12 and then a small forward at 50. Taking another mid with the later pick.
Burton will be a star and is determined to become a Midfielder

That is something that is unlikely to happen though. If the description of the injury is correct, he sustained a nasty tibial plateau fracture with some meniscal damage. Ryan claims that there was no ligamentous damage. So as long as the fractured bones were aligned well and the meniscal damage was minor, he should be fine with contact. The medicos should be all over his MRIs, CT scans and X-rays. They would know the risk pretty well.

Yep, if the club medico's feel confident that his knee will hold up i'd be happy for us to pull the trigger, his talent far exceeds pick 12.
