Been staying away from all the draft stuff this year, so apologies if this question has been answered numerous times, but is there someone we've been heavily linked to as of yet? The past 2 years it was pretty much a foregone conclusion weeks before the draft took place that we would be taking Vlastuin and C.Ellis.

Been heavily linked to Jacob Weitering.................. in two years time when he wants to leave Carlton. They will take pick 18 for him we hope ;)

Brett Anderson has Gresham ranked the 5th best non-academy player in the draft. Interesting the discrepancy in opinion between he and Quayle on a few players, they're normally pretty similar.

I know Brett is very very strong on Gresham- This year is funny, everyone rates players differently. Should make for an interesting draft night!

Ya know what add Harley Balic too.. He is a smooth mover and could end up Pendlebury-like. Ready to go most likely and even though I didn't want him a few weeks ago I've really warmed to the idea.

I should stop posting..... haha.
It looks like we're gonna get a good player regardless.

My preferences in order, not considering that there might be a slider:

Oliver > Balic > Burton > Collins > Clarke > Gresham > Ah Chee > Mathieson

Won't end up like Pendlebury, he'll never be 1/2 the player Pendles is.

An article on Jacob Weitering, ill-advised comments. Probably has to do with meeting SOS and Bolton.

Jacob Weitering would be best served worrying about his own AFL future than passing judgement on some of its stars, says Andrew Gaze. The projected number one pick in the upcoming national draft has already met with Carlton coach Brendon Bolton and list manager Stephen Silvagni at his home last month for over an hour. In a recent interview he revealed he was not one to be into the party life usually accustomed with a footballer, and was not shy in pointing out a few examples. “I’m not the party type, that’s for Dustin Martin and Dane Swan to do in Las Vegas, I’m sure they’re enjoying themselves, but that’s not me,” Weitering told the Herald Sun.

Gaze believes he should keep such words to himself given he has done absolutely nothing in the league and does not have anything in the bank to be firing any shots at quality players. “There’s an inference there about Martin and Swan who are bona fide stars and have arrived and in the top echelon of players,” said Gaze on SEN radio.

“If you’re not an AFL player don’t be passing judgement, don’t even make a comment like that. “Okay, you do your thing but don’t be making comments about what the superstars of the game do, just leave that alone and worry about yourself. “I just caution him to leave that alone.”

The key defender has already been likened to the great Silvagni and will arrive at the club with significant expectations from supporters. “I don’t know the man and at 18 years of age it’s fantastic that he’s got the world ahead of him,” added Gaze. “It’s all great, Weitering says he’s itching to join an AFL club but I reckon when you’re talking about superstars of the game don’t present it in a way to say you think they are not necessarily 100 per cent committed.”

i think you blokes are being very harsh on JW, He's one of the nicest blokes in this draft pool. I'd be very happy to have him at our club (won't be happening).

Bishop Do you think we are a chance to go for Collins?

I think so, going to be interesting. The only person who I can rule out us picking is Clayton Oliver, as he'll be gone by Carlton's Pick8.

So were still a chance at Weitering then

Can I ask why you believe this ? Believe that testing of next years top age midfielders shows , at this stage , they are below par . I do acknowledge this can change in a hurry but just wondering.
The word midfielders has "" around it if you didn't notice indicating that this is a common thought from those who have more draft knowledge than myself. I never said I believed it. It's just the general perception out there.
A question for you. What is this testing you speak of?

Testing such as sprint , agility , leap , kicking , etc .

We say we need x-factor but the only likely choice is Ah Chee and I am still not keen on him. We have X factor with Deledio, Edwards and Lennon, Yarran will bring more, and I like to think playing one or all of Vlastuin, Townsend and Moore inside will bring some x-factor back into the games of Cotchin and Dusty.

So, Clarke would fill needs nicely. Big enough to play inside, but knows how to find the ball outside, is a natural leader and is a fantastic gut runner. A great fit for Richmond and will be a great player at AFL level.

Clarke moves like Ben Cousins[/QUOTE]
The likeness to Cousins struck me too when I first saw his highlights. Think it's the way he balances his body.

Never seen so many Phantom drafts and articles this far out from draft having such a common top 10-15 with most having us taking Ah Chee

I actually just think that most people have no idea who we are taking so jump on the first guess thrown around. For years now we have kept our draft selections pretty close to our chest - especially our later choices. I wouldn't be surprized if we take Ah-Chee but we don't have many obvious holes on our list other than possibly a small forward so this is why people have jumped on Ah-Chee for us.

Who says we can't? Who says the internal development over a myriad of players (certainly there are enough young players on our list for such improvement) can push us into a top 4 position. After a poor start we were a kick from finishing top 4. Hawthorn and Sydney lost key players and Fremantle are aging. Furthermore a 'doozy' can be attained in one off season. Development occurs over a longer period of time.

History will tell you that you don't win a premiership unless you're top 4. Id say that seeking a top 4 berth as a precursor for a premiership is exactly putting the horse before the cart.

Elton is taller and bigger. Also Collins has only played at under 18 level where he would be more dominant purely because he's physically more developed. Also kicking is a skill as opposed to a physical attribute (being picky I know).

All the attributes that are on Collins as a young defender are almost exactly the same as Rance in his draft year. If my memory serves he was rated the best key back in his draft class and it still took him a few years to develop.

Its all speculative obviously, but we are talking about a rookie being able to stop a players better than a 10+ year veteran. I personally don't see that happening. I don't see it happening for a few years to be honest. Again not saying it cant or wont, just dont think it will.

IMO I think a replacement for Chaplain is better found from either within the club (Astbury or Elton) or from a trade/ free agency signing of an experienced player.

Other argument I would make re Chaplain is that I believe that the backline/ forward line/ midfield whatever is bigger than the sum of its parts. Chaplain in isolation is a poor defender. But his ability to communicate and provide at least some body to body contact allows Rance to do what he does. Rance himself has said that. He has said the same thing about Grimes and Vlastuin and has more than once credited his personal success to the help of others.

Could Collins come in and pick up the nuances of being able to match a Hawkins or Cloke or Dixon or any other body to body from round 1? Could he pick up the speed of AFL football from round 1? Can he pick up the communication essentials of AFL football in such a fast pace environment from round 1? Does he have the skill level and understanding to deal with complex defensive structures from round 1?

Maybe he does. Maybe he doesn't. My opinion is that Id be happy to get him, but I wouldn't expect him to play - maybe not at all - year 1 (for us) and then it would take him a few years to develop the small aspect required to play impactful AFL football week after week in a key position post. If thats the case I think there are other avenues out there to satisfy a second tall defender IF it is deemed a requirement.

Imo it is very rare for a new defender to come in and immediately take a 1st or 2nd defender position and do it well, so I think this idea is naive at best.

Should be interesting to see the live picks change in real time with the bidding system in play on the same night.

Don't know about you but I'm not really too fussed about the testing. How do they compare as footballers?
IMO from what I have viewed , next years draft will have some excellent early picks but post 13-14 is shaping up no better if as good as this years .
Bookmark the initials L.P. , may take longer than next year and therefore make it to the 2017 draft as overage .
