Gees I hope Bruce McAvaney doesn't see that pic, he'll be crying himself to sleep with jealousy tonight.

Ross Lyon on 3AW 'We're learning lessons about what teams are throwing at us. There's no magic on the footy field, it's all explainable'

Explains a lot. Well played Mr Lyon.

I liked the bit where he told Matthew Lloyd "we had a chat in the box after the game about the rubbish your channel 9 football show said about us."

thought ross was having a go about the sunday footy show not Matthew lloyd per se. will have to relisten. had a relisten. I was right. he was having more of a go against nathan brown and his assumptions regarding footage of RTB after the game on the sunday footy show. actually lloyd questioned brown and his silly angle on the show at the time. was garbage on Brown's behalf but he is a halfwit

You don't learn much when you keep winning. You actually learn a lot from losing but we can't lose so what's the next best way to learn? Win ugly, win close, win under pressure.

Mark Thompson said when Hawthorn beat them in the 2008 Grand Final he regretted not manufacturing close game for his players and that flogging teams week in week out wasn't good leading up to the finals because they need to know what close games were like. Geelong lost 1 game for year in 2008 but lost the Grand Final.

I reckon it Was Nathan Brown on the Sunday Footy Show who brought up the crap about Lyon "berating" his crew, so I dunno what Lloyd was getting sensitive about. I guess he said Lyon was animated, which he poo-pooed

The interview's already on their site.

From his interview:
- Ballas is out for home & away season only (7 weeks)
- When asked about the state of the game, very carefully turned it into a go at the umps & rule interpretations
- Mentioned the supporting Fyfe stuff again
- Asked about people writing Freo off. Lots of Lyonisms & I learned nothing from his answer
- Would be happy if Lloyd got a senior coach role & is ready for it

So basically he was asked a lot of stupid questions, and he pretty much answered nothing. Gotta love his interviews

Why can't they ask questions like "what is Deboers role" and then follow up with "in light of the teams lack of scoring, is this role beneficial to the teams ongoing success?"
Journalists don't ask questions like that because nobody except the people on this forum are interested in obsessing over a fringe player.

To me it's not though. It's a wider commentary on Lyons tactics and coaching, as well as asking a question that (IMO) all Freo fans want the answer to. Journalists ask questions like they're throwing big slow punches and RTB just dodges them. We get so little info out of Lyon interviews because the questions are sweeping and not specific.

This year he's played 10 games, missed 5. Take a look. You really think our team's performance was significantly influenced by either his presence or his absence?
And even if I was forced evaluate his influence, I would have thought in the games against WB and Richmond - where he was out - we suffered for a lack of forward pressure.

Thanks. My point though is that I would like to hear a question like this ( maybe not specifically DeBoer) asked of Lyon and to hear his answer. Your thoughts are most welcome though.

There's no getting away from the fact that Lyon has a defensive mindset. It underpins his whole coaching philosophy. I think the issue does come up though in interviews. Remember when he mentioned at the beginning of last year that he wanted two more goals a game - then got asked about that every week for a year when he failed to achieve it? But on the whole being defensively minded is a philosophy that has worked for him.

If Lyon was asked an in depth question about what a player's specific role is, he'd give a deadpan answer. Coaches give away as little as possible. It's usually the case that when a player is playing well, they'll talk them down, and if he's playing poorly, they'll publicly talk them up.
