Im not so sure its that clear cut - would the Dogs want Weitering or Oliver going into this years final series? IMO Weitering would add more value. This is not taking anything away from Oliver who is clearly one of the very best players in the comp and the best from this draft.
Everyone asked why Melbourne took Jackson at 3 when we had Gawn is the counter argument I guess

And I get your point with the Bulldogs but most times teams with the first few picks in the draft need a lot of talent all across the ground

Big win the Suns getting a priority pick. Not sure you would have over looked Anderson - especially if they went with your theory and hopefully Rawlings in on the same page with Horne!!

yeah we did get lucky with the Suns getting the priority pick

Imo Oliver is the best player in the league atm
He could very well have a premiership, brownlow and norm smith to go with his coaches award by the end of the year

No arguments from me whatsoever. Clarry's performance in the qualifying final against Brisbane further reinforces his status as the cream of this draft.

I am just bloody happy with Weitering, Harry and hopefully injury free from now on Charlie Curnow.

Some fans are never satisfied, I think it's fair to say Carlton have 2 of the top 3 players from this draft (Weitering and Harry), yet cannot acknowledge Clayton Oliver is and has been the best player from his draft class since day one.

Sheesh

He’s a freak but I don’t think you can be the best player in the comp without the ability to play forward.
Why is that?

You need to be able to hit the scoreboard regularly to be the best in the game?

Forwards the hardest position to impact games in. I can’t think of the last player considered best in the comp who wasn’t kicking at least a goal a game.

Would probably have Oliver top 3 this year though so he isn’t far off.

I don't necessarily agree but I can understand your point/thought pattern

Scoreboard impact is the biggest impact you can have on a game so that's fair

Things is Oliver does impact the scoreboard. Not always directly off his boot. He has kicked 10 goals but has also been inaccurate kicking 17 behinds.
However rates elite for score involvements, shots at goal and score launches. Comparing him to Bont or Petracca for goals for example is not fair. He doesn’t play forward as often as those two.

Would love to see a score assist stat made public

Not a huge fan of the score involvement and goal assist options we have atm. For mine the most important stats forward of the ball are Goals, score assists and inside 50 retention rates.

Are you this critical of someone like Merrett - who kicked 4 goals for the year? I don't think Oliver needs to kick more goals to be the best player in the comp.

He and the Bont in 2021 were the 2 best IMO. Splitting hairs to separate.

I don’t think there’s any suggestion Merrett is the best player in the comp.

If I am to nit pick Oliver’s game in comparison to guys who were previously number 1 players in the league:

- Poor around goals

- Is prone to hack kicks from stoppages at a rate you just don’t see from your peak Pendlebury, Ablett, Martins.

- Doesn’t have that ability to just destroy guys 1v1 like a peak Fyfe, Ablett, Martin.

It’s hard to value players as it isn’t obvious what stats drives winning especially when different teams succeed in different ways. AFL player ratings (excluding rucks their system over values effective HO imo) rateable isn’t a bad guide for who’s had the best season but I wouldn’t say best season equates to being the best player in the league.

They are fairly decent numbers for someone that doesn't play forward often. Not sure if it is accurate or not, but seem to have the impression that Oliver rests behind the ball more than pushing forward as well.

They are stats from AFL website. Yeah he doesn’t push forward a he’ll of a lot especially when he’s in beast mode in the midfield.

1) Oliver
2) Dunkley
3) McKay
4) Weitering
5) Hopper
6) Parish
7) Mills
8) Doedee
9) Himmelberg
10) Hipwood
11) Hardwick
12) Dawson
13) Keays
14) Burton
15) Phillips

If not for injury I think that Curnow would be top 5, and Gresham would be about 7/8th.

Dunkley way too high

Long term I could see him potentially getting to 3 or 4 but would be around 7-9 now

I think shut down KPDs who don’t offer much offensively are overrated but I’d have B.McKay in the top 15 especially if you’re including potential improvement. Himmelburg is also a lock for top 15.

Some absolute gems in the rookie draft as well (Papley, Tippa, Houston, Greenwood and Keath)

Didn't include rookies and somehow missed Himmelberg. I think I'd prefer the other McKay over Broad too.

Very strong draft all told.

Hipwood has kicked nearly double the goals of Himmelberg. Has way out performed him as a player so far
