This thread is struggling, let's get back to the task at hand.
Mitch Brown Sandy worth a 4th rounder? We were keen on him two drafts ago but nothing eventuated.
I've posted here many times that he was finished at AFL level, but his VFL form this year can't be ignored.

Also I see Matthew Young's son Alex has made All Australian, just our luck that Youngy played 97 games for us!
Has brown played better footy down back or forward. If we get him he has to play back. Won't bet into our forward line

I would be pretty happy to have ago at him but there are a few others keen as well. One of the older brigade that got the call up for the draft combine but I would prefer to rookie him more than take a place on the senior list.

He'd be a good fill in for our list at his age and size, adaptable, plays forward and back.

Isn't that Delaney's role? With him playing in the reserves is there really any point in getting another player like that? Is Brown really that much of an improvement on Delaney to be worth taking a list spot?

Lee has me scared re state and VFL players. Id prefer another Sinclair with a late pick / rookie. I think he gets another chance with a club tho

No doubt and Goddard certainly looked good didn't he? I just mean that opening the flood gates may not be the best way to develop the team. I understand you are suggesting we test new guys, and I agreed. Balance, as always, is the key!
We'd still have plenty of cover in Dempster and Gilbert though so don't think it would be opening the flood gates. I expect our midfield to improve a bit as well which would help.

EDIT: Forgot that we've got Delaney as well.

Hopper and Mills are top 5 players and Matt Kennedy is in the top 10 discussion. I'd really like to see every club be granted an Academy.
That would basically just see us in the zones days again...

Yep. How long before Collingwood start moving every half decent 16 year old into their 'academy area'? And as an added downside throwing cash at absolutely everything to try and buy success will actually work again for Carlton. I much prefer the current situation.

Academies are a terrible idea.

Yup agree. This is why I've been on the bandwagon to add either Aish / Weller (unlikely this year) + late first or 2 x mid-late first / early second.

Let's say for arguments sake:
1. Weitering
2. Schache
3. Hopper
4. Mills
5. Parish
6. Francis
7. Mathieson

I really like Lachie but give me one of Parish/Francis/Mathieson over Weller and Pick 18. We need to add best young kids we can with these high picks. Unless something extraordinary comes up during trade period we will just keep hitting the draft, as we should. We are still 3 years away from Top 4, we won't rush things now.
IF Weller wants to come home post 2016 then we pay a lesser price then.

No it wouldn't, not if it was handled accordingly and the open draft process was kept (though to a lesser extent). The gap between the u18s and the AFL is growing. The AFL has recognised this, but still more needs to be done, not to mention it'd help keep footballers in football and not in cricket/basketball. Go down to the Sandy Dragons and ask them what they thought of a kid called Tom Wilson.

Would be worse with the rich clubs having a free reign over the whole of Victoria
What might work is if you let all clubs have academies outside of afl heartlands. Chances are only the rich could afford it but if it works it spreads the good players from those areas more and increases participation

We'll agree to disagree. I think it's an awful idea.

Just on Delaney .why isn't he getting a game .?

Richo wants his key defenders to be able to hurt the opposition going the other way as well. The days of the dour key defender are dwindling away.

I dont understand how it could work if everyclub did.... afl have to fix this. What a joke imho

If we are a legit chance of getting Francis or Parish then I'd bank the pick and go to the draft. If not, I'd take Weller and a slider at 18 over Matho or any one other player in this draft.

We are still well short of quality and we'll need some luck and creative trading and drafting to position ourselves for top 4 in 3 years time IMO.

The Dogs were lucky with F/S's, GWS and GC with concessions and the big teams, well they just have more money to spend than us.

It's also just another example of the AFL eroding another pillar of community and grass roots football

Before too long they will canabilse everything that's the next level down. In before the state leagues are destroyed by a reserves comp that the clubs will demand

Does anyone actually give a shit about the game beyond their immediate interest?

You're severely under rating Mathieson.
