Way too early for this sort of stuff, but I hope we keep the list turnover to a minimum. We can't afford to keep having a settling in period to start the season.

We're interested in Rance and Dangerfield? I'd imagine everyone who'll have much cap space next year is. Dangerfield is highly unlikely you'd imagine, and I feel Rance is a little overrated. The massive difference between his best and worst isn't what you'd want from an expensive key defender for mine. Someone is going to everpay for Suckling- I hope it isn't us. Dixon and Henderson are understandable, although you'd think there would be a few Victorian clubs happy to offer Henderson a reasonable deal if he wanted to leave Carlton. If we let Leuenberger go, we'd have to be careful what we do with our 2nd ruck situation. Martin's had a good run with injury recently, not sure I'd bet on that continuing. Dixon's a good ruckman, but you wouldn't want him anywhere near the gabba centre square.

When everyone starting singing Rance's praises last year I would have agreed, but it seems he has turned form into class by the way he is continuing this year. He seems to have sorted his attention span out and gained consistency. Sure he had some pretty poor performances before last season but there hasn't been much to fault over the last 18 months.

Plus if it's true that Leppa is responsible for his improvement he ought to be able to get the best out of him.

My only issue is the whole religious thing distracting him from footy and potentially pulling him away from footy.

Can the Lions really afford to be picky? The guy is the current AA centre half-back. I would have thought if the Lions were able to attain Rance then they do everything they can to get him. He's 25 and has over 100 games experience so it's a good investment. It would appear the Lions have almost given up on drafting and developing their own talent and will look to buy their talent from other clubs. Fair enough, have a look at Hawthorn's premiership teams over the last few years. Burgoyne, Hale, McEvoy and Lake. All key players that helped them win premierships and none of them started at Hawthorn. The process has already begun at Brisbane with Beams and Christensen heading north last year. Add Rance plus a KPF to the team and you suddenly have quality across the ground, similar to the way the Hawks recruited. The Hawks had their KPFs in Roughead and Buddy (at the time) so they went after quality players in the positions of ruck, midfield and key defender.

Brisbane's strength is their midfield with the likes of Hanley, Zorko, Rockliff and Rich all being of high quality. So in that sense, the team can actually afford to lose Aish and should do everything they can to fill the other holes when trading Aish at the end of the year (presuming he leaves). Land Rance and a KPF like Dixon and you're going to win a lot more games.

How do you reach this conclusion? Our entire backline is under 21, and probably half of our starting 22 we've drafted within the last 3 or so seasons.

We have a huge hole in the salary cap that we're obliged to fill. It either has to be a big FA or overpaying current players.

People forget we drafted Dawson, Andrews, Watts, McGrath, McGuiness and Clayton last year.

This is absolute bullshit given all our current KPP's are young draftees while several we developed are now with other clubs.

Look at who they are chasing. Supposedly Rance and Dixon are the top two targets. Do you think those two are going to be spending time in the NEAFL if they decide to move to Brisbane? The answer would be no. Those KPP draftees will be heading back to the NEAFL.

You can only play who you have.

And so how do you reason we've 'given up'? Every team in the AFL will be chasing free agents.

You guys picked up Ryder, Monfries and Polec. Have you given up developing ruck-forwards, small forwards and outside mids?

I actually said "almost given up". I know the writing is on the wall but if the Lions were determined to continue developing Aish then they wouldn't have put off contract talks to the end of the season after round 7. It seems to me they are prioritising landing a free agent or two over trying to retain their own players. I have no problem with that mentality and I used Hawthorn as an example of how it can be done successfully.

"Lions have almost given up on drafting and developing their own talent".

Our entire current backline is drafted and developed here.

Our entire current forward line is drafted and developed here.

Rance will likely take over from Merrett who will call it quits in the next couple of years.

Dixon will bump one KPF back to the NEAFL (assuming no injuries) but that's still assuming all of Close, Freeman and McStay end up making it, which history says is unlikely.

Four players in our team on Sunday had played for another team. Seven players from Port had played for another team. Please hop on your own board and tell them how you've given up drafting and developing your own talent.

Yet those so called KPP'ers beat your so called team

you sir are either an absolute muppet or having a trolll

they havent given up resigning him but obviously he doesnt want to do a deal before end of the season slash wants to leave, we've tabled ihm a very good offer and very generous too given his output so far in his career and he wont sign, why waste any more time?

So trying to bring in other players is "giving up" on developing talent. You're not exactly showing a lot of clear thought process here. Of course we're looking at some older more experienced KPP so we can continue to develop our younger KPP instead of throwing them to the slaughter each week.

For most KPP (especially those who aren't early first round draft picks) the traditional and by far more common method of development is to build up your strength and abilities in the seconds for a few years with a game or two here and there, not play every week from game one. We've been forced to play guys before they're ready and have been trying to correct this (lisle, paine, maguane, bids for tippet, buddy etc) for years now but we've been unable to get a good outcome. Recent names thrown around are just a continuation of trying to get us back towards normal, not giving up on development.

Don't kid yourself into thinking that anyone but Aish and Pickering are responsible for talks with Brisbane going nowhere. Even if it is true that talks are on hold (which I consider unlikely given the statement only a week ago on the opposite), you can't really blame brisbane for getting sick of talking to a brick wall over and over again. As for not developing him, he's a second year player who got dropped after a 6 posession game and other ordinary showings. TBH if we had kept playing him after those performances people probably would have been saying we're only playing him to try to keep him here, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Its not like he's been barred from playing, was sent back to the NEAFL to work on some areas aka "develop". Seriously some people seem to think that you're not developing if you're not playing seniors which is ridiculous. Just look at Robertson. Played a few good games last year but overall needed to work on a few areas of his game, which he did in the NEAFL. Has come back this year showing a lot of improvement aka signs of development.

Geez you post some crap sometimes but this really takes the cake. Might be worth concentrating on your own team for a while or go on continuing to bother the Gold Coast board with useless stadium progress updates.

This news article has you confused about whether it's an absolute, or whether it's rumoured that we are going after these players.

Even if we land both of them - most of our tall talent is still from a recent draft, or in fact, from Queensland. The Lions have actually gambled to develop young players from up here rather than have them Polec off back home.
