Strategic I agree, but I don't believe it's the dangling carrot scenario. If money is what drives him then he wouldn't have taken a huge pay cut to join us in the first place.
He knows he's old (in footy terms), that his body is susceptible to knee and calf problems and that the 2016 list has limited spots which he may not get one of depending on our other signings and recruit targets. He wants to get it locked up now so he doesn't end up being the one we need to let go to get our target/s.
Unfortunately for him the clubs knows all this too and while it would be great to sign him up now and reward a Norm Smith medalist for all his great work the reality of the situation is that the club knows if we want him we can get his signature on a contract when ever we want once the season is done. If we sign him now and then he does an ACL that's career over and then we've lost about $100k-150k out of our cap for 2016.
He'll quite likely get offered a contract if we don't get a Tarrant/Henderson (hopefully not...) in October.
I concur, the carrot for Lake isn't money, its playing well enough to get another contract, right now he's playing on edge because he wants to play that extra year. He's the exact type that needs to be on edge to play his best football....he isn't in demand due to his age, so Hawthorn can afford to push his buttons without any repercussions. ie; losing him to another club.
