Na Cryptor, you're one of my favourite posters because you think laterally. All I'm doing is saying "hey this is the type we should go for, these are the reasons why".. I have said for a while now I think we will aim at soldiers rather than stars, guys that can play a role and could be gettable ala Lycett who is 3 deep and is obviously a top calibre ruck/forward.
I agree with you that Lycett is a good type. But I also agree with Abasi (I preferred Echols) that we're not going to get a player we "need" from a club that is contending. At least not at a cost that made him an attractive prospect to begin with. I think we'd find West Coast would sooner trade him to Essendon for less than what we might offer.

Out of interest, why are you so keen on soldiers? Aside from picking up depth cheap where it's available (which is always good management), surely that thinking is more 2011 than 2015.

We need quality FAs on back-ended contracts that mature after our stars retire, and youth with upside. Hawks won't overcommit on an FA, so we don't need to worry about that.

If we get the right mid, there should be another year at the top in this group. If we keep relying on our old guys supported by soldiers, we slide.

228 pages now of who and how but this May be the year we just hit the draft . Not the year for it considering the depth of the draft but our cap and bargaining power with picks and tradable players just can't see us being to active . Hope I'm wrong as inside mids I feel are a necessity with our ageing midfield

There's been a lot of talk about us going hard for future draft pick trades based on the expectation/assumption we are after a "big fish". That sounds logical but I wonder if we could seek to acquire future picks rather than trade them away, given the general view that this year's draft is shallow but next year's is expected to be much stronger. Having said that, I don't know who we'd trade to garner future picks but we tend not to let sentiment stand in the way of a deal that is good for the club. We have admirable depth but they need games to continue their development so I wonder if we'll see a fan favourite moved on (with their consent).

I've always thought that we play the trade table like the stock market by buying value and selling players at the top of their game but with not much upside or not many top years left. For that reason I think we're more likely to go for a young player with potential rather than pay too much for a Treloar. I don't have any bright ideas as to who we'd go for as I'm afraid I'm a bit one-eyed and don't watch opposition players much.

I'm not nessecarily saying I want a soldier, I just think the club will go down the path of some young untapped talent, not the big names that we'd all love.

Oh shite just got on here to post almost the same thing in regards to future picks and I also feel the the big fish this year is just Terry Wallace scuttlebutt and we are more likely to offload someone of currency but surplus to our needs, in order to to make a strong play on next years draft. I am also on the side of those expecting a slide next year in terms of ladder position, so combined with future picks and an improved position in the draft order the Hawks could stock up on draft talent rather than pay overs and muck up our cap and player payment structure.
Who is of currency and surplus to our needs I'd leave that to you guys.

Because your so awesome , work for your self ,have a hot missus, drive expensive cars, think I've read sorrento mentioned somewhere, yadda yadda yadda.
So of course you would be able to throw the boots on for the hawkers.
We should just have a thread just on how amazing you are!!

2 + 2 = 5 (aka Agent Smith putting the jigsaw puzzle together).

Consider this:
  • Carlisle quits Essendon, but doesn't name a club, which suggests the club of his choice may still be playing finals
  • Hawthorn won't sign Lake before the end of the year
  • Carlisle may be suspended by WADA so whoever picks him up may not have him available for a while
  • Hawthorn needs another tall back on top of Frawley and is hedging its bets
Conclusion: Dangerfield is coming to Hawthorn, baby!

My thinking also.

What was the story with Nathan Carroll? We weren't into him surely? I remember Clarko was desperate to get Thornton which in hindsight is even crazier than it sounded at the time.

Thornton played in the Deer Park GF last year, was probably earning more there than he was the last year he was at Carlton...
