Haha, although I celebrate the trophies we won in a very competitive SANFL back in the day, I don't really use them as direct pissing contests unless its regarding overall success of the club in the long run. In terms of overall success, we have 3 wooden spoons alongside the premiership cups, but in terms of AFL, we have 1 trophy alongside 0 wooden spoons. I think thats the most appropriate way for me to put it :p
I don't understand how the vics can count their VFL flags yet don't rate the SANFL, we used to stitch them up in the State of Origin with half a team of these so called amateur players and the other half were either captains or premiership players in their VFL sides. The SANFL was a top line comp until all of our stars were poached and we entered a franchise and then Port joined

88' State of Origin where "amateur" Martin Leslie had Brereton running scared with claret streaming from him. Macca ran rings around Greg Williams. Kernahan, Bradley, Platten they were in the best players in the country

Carlton, Saints, Dogs or Collingwood.

This post is an Abomination...

You've named four teams, but not Melbourne.

I know teams' personnel and fortunes can change year to year, but you can't ignore the fact that Collingwood won more games last year than melb has won in the last three seasons COMBINED...

Edit: possibly a bit harsh. If you include essendon, this thread has melb as fifth favourite...despite betting markets having them clear second shortest @ $3.5

How often do teams win back to back wooden spoons? It's only happened 3 times in the past 18 years.

Although the Saints do have a knack for it, they've gone back to back 11 times since 1897.

Rest assured, the order of the teams was in order of most likely to least likely.

Carlton's list absolutely stinks. One of the few teams to get worse over the trade period than improve. Who's going to kick your goals next year with Garlett and Waite gone?

Melbourne will likely be in the bottom half of the ladder next year, but what's the point of including your own team when every single poster has their own obvious bias? It's like the "who will make finals in 2015" thread where everyone finds a way to justify their own team making the top 8.

Melbourne. Haven't really improved their list IMO.
Hope I'm proved wrong, would like to us and them finish above Carlton.
Obviously biased but disagree. We will add Hogan and Garlett to our forward line, Frost and Lamumba to our backline (I don't consider Frawley a loss for our backline considering Roos swung him forward, and Clark never even played so he's hardly a loss), plus Newton to our midfield.

The midfield probably needed more talent added over the trade period than just Newton, but overall our list is going in the right direction and is vastly improved from 2014. Our main problem last year was scoring pressure.

Plus the injection of highly touted draftees Petracca/Brayshaw as developing players under McCartney and Goodwin.

Why are Carlton suddenly spoon contenders when they were very close to beating some pretty good teams, and with a bit of luck, would have had 4-5 more wins last year?

Where is St. Kilda's sudden improvement going to come from? Carlton is going to have to play significantly worse to even have a chance of getting it. They had some injury concerns last year too, so far touch wood the list isn't too affected by injury. A full pre-season for most of the players, uninterrupted, is going to help a lot. Especially with Kruezer back in the side.

If Carlton win the spoon this year, I'll eat Andrew Walker's hat.
Because not many of your kids have shown potential to be future stars bar Menzel and half of your senior players that you're heavily reliant on are unfortunately injury prone. If you guys have a dream injury run then you'll be say 10th-13th, but that will be off the back of the 24yo+ types. Judd's your only true damaging forward of centre type midfielder, will Thomas ever get back to his high flying Collingwood days?

The 1st 13-15 guys picked in the team are solid Judd, Gibbs, Murphy, Kreuzer, Jamison, Henderson, Casboult, Simpson, Walker, Everitt, Thomas, Yarran, Menzel, Curnow is a solid tagger and I guess Bell tries hard and Docherty is improving but needs better disposal, but as I said injuries may happen and it will be unlikely that group will play together every week, after that it's the list cloggers or unproven kids filling up the rest of the team. Imo Carrazzo is finished as well, I wonder why Cachia was cut instead.

Don't see the Eagles as that team. We could well end up crap this year, but to get the Spoon, i don't think so. One of our problems as a team is that we don't have many A graders (especially through the midfield), which may limit our ceiling, but also makes us fairly resilient to injuries as we don't rely on a couple of players to carry us.
Eagles will be fine, half of the injury-prone liabilities have retired now so they will have more blokes playing deep into the season and not off for surgery. Key position players are their strength obviously they just need a big bodied midfielder or two and a gun forward of centre type gut runner who hits the scoreboard and that would propel them to top 6.

All that said, we are still the most likely to get the spoon though, IMO. I think it might be a battle between us and WB. Carlton could finish anywhere between 18th and around 8th, I reckon and I fully expect Melbourne to improve this year and be out of the spoon "race" (unless whoever comes last has say 6 wins, then it could be really up for grabs). Their offseason list changes look to have strengthened their list considerably in both the short and long term and the big joker they have up their sleeve is Jesse Hogan, who has now had 3 AFL preseasons and already looked ready to play two years ago. He could explode from the get-go and have a 40+ goal season and make them a much better team just by himself.
Just back on the Dogs.

We won the VFL Flag last season, we beat Hawthorn's reserves that day the reigning VFL and AFL premiers, a lot of the boys who are still around and helped win that premiership will fight for their place in the starting 22, the likes of Jong, Darley, Campbell, Redpath, Honeychurch, Hunter, Talia, Roberts (played H and A season then had surgery, formed a great understanding with Talia). I'm not too bullish on Grants, Dicksons and A Cordys longevity but they have all shown in the past they can play forward and contribute.

Roberts, Talia and Redpath are into their 4th pre seasons and should be ready to help our KP depth, Hrovat (3 pre seasons) and Jong (4 ps) will step into the midfield full time and Shane Biggs after a few years at a strong Sydney team should improve our rebounding stocks.

While much will be expected of Boyd remember that Stringer and Crameri kicked 63 goals between them last year and most of them were kicked on the number 1 and 2 defenders. Boyd takes the number 1 defender but 1 of Crameri or Stringer will be good for 4 goals a game on a 3rd type.

I doubt Hogan will do a Jeremy Cameron but if he can notch up 1-1.5 a game that will be a solid effort.

Shocking back 6 and no key forward to speak of leaves the WB vulnerable. Given they've lost their best player and best young key forward.
Stringer and Crameri say hi.

VFL premiership key position defender Michael Talia will improve the back 6 after 4 AFL pre seasons, while VFL premiership key forward Jack Redpath will help take a big body away from Boyd, Stringer and Crameri.

Both struggle to have any impact at AFL level.

Your injury list last season was next to zero and your VFL team was loaded with senior players. Even your top ups had years of VFL experience and big bodies.

Your also expecting 80+ goals out of Cameri or Stringer this season which is just pie in the sky type stuff while Boyd will attract some attention I doubt he will be the sole focus with his poor showing to date.

Of all the players we lost, only Griffen was playing that day in queensland when we beat GC. Signs like that show we can still put in good performances no matter what team we put out there. Comfortable we're still ahead of St Kilda and probably Melbourne at this stage. With the potential to be further up.

I'd be very suprised if we won the spoon with teams like that still in the competition.
Griff didn't play that day, was a late out for JJ.

You hang shit on Liam Jones for years, now he is better than the #1 pick from a year ago? Your hate for the dogs is unmatched, can't win either way.

No he's better than Grant Redpath and Campbell as forwards and going into next season will more than likely be better than Boyd.

Us unfortunately. Pick 1 (and maybe 2?) will ease the pain though.

If you guys finished last and received a priority that would be a great result, You already have some great talent add 2 more and your future is there to develop.

May as well bottom out big time to reap the rewards, What's the point of winning 7 games next season?

Correct. As long as the kids are getting games into them and are developing it's a great result.

Fair enough but that's just optimism right now.
Garlett is a front runner.
Hogan (will be a gun) is unproven at afl level and unlikely to make a difference this year.
Lumumba can add some run.
Frost doesn't come close to covering the loss of Frawley.
Petracca and brayshaw can't be expected to do much this year.
Maybe in a couple of years I see your new players having an impact, but not this year.

I don't understand how you interstate flogs can't understand the Afl is a product of the VFL.
