List Mgmt. 2016 AFL Draft

Thinking back to the Grand Final I can't really remember any of the players listed (Gaff isn't the physical type tbf and did play well) who gave even a yelp and showed a tiny bit of passion for the jumper. That's what SPP would provide IMO. Not to mention his raging bull style is exactly what we need.

I'm probably in the minority here but I don't really think that GF performance was down to lack of passion. I think we got mauled early by a well oiled machine. We conceded a few early goals and once our confidence was shot we were never going to catch up. I don't think the work rate was off. Some key moments that sum up that day were Hutchings being run down, Shuey's average kick into the fifty, Darling's drop. Alot of it was down to immense pressure, either physical or scoreboard. But that's getting off topic.

Well I don't think it's just down to physicality, but I agree with the notion that we need a physical type such as Sam.

Out of interest, as you're seemingly a fan of his, what does Gallucci provide that our existing players don't? To me, his kicking seems solid at best. Has some decent breakaway speed I suppose. Apart from that, he just strikes me as a solid prospect at best. Partington level.

SPP provides a lot that we don't have and for that he is worth reaching for. I hope we don't go the conservative route.

I don't think we should draft someone just because he's a supporter but.....

In a situation where its splitting hairs in differences between players the inherent flight risk of a Victorian boy compared to a local lad shouldn't be discounted out of hand

It's harder to keep a player from interstate and quite likely we need to pay a premium to encourage them to stay

The thing that's really sold me on SPP is hearing about how much he wants to make it as an AFL player, you know he's going to do everything asked of him and completely work his ass off for himself, his team mates, coaches and club. I just hope he some how slides to our 2nd if we pick up someone else at our first. We could do with another player with passion for the jumper because atm it seems to only be Shuey... And also because Gallucci is intimidated by SPP:D

Draft 2016 is expected to go down as a great draft year. We should be able to pick up 3 - 4 prospects that will play at the elite level. There are some informed pundits (possessing inside knowledge on who clubs have interviewed, where they rate players, etc) having us not needing to take Waterman until past pick 50 - that says it a lot. Like going to a great party as a 20 year old, all recruiters should go away on Friday believing their first 2 picks are good lookers and our last pick will not be someone with just a good personality (cue the likes of Banfield, Goddard, Cameron).

For all those posters who will want to melt Friday night, how about you set up a new thread and join stinger05 boycotting the team and limit yourself to only watching East Perth. (OK - getting English at 12 will test my limits but not even that would not get me close to sitting with stinger05 at Leederville Oval supporting East Perth).

Who really thought early in their careers that Kennedy and Mitchell (Sydney or ex Sydney variety) were slow and or vanilla? How many of the Doggies premiership players did people think were "vanilla" on draft day? The Doggies made us look slow in the 1st final because of their positioning at the contest plus they came with the right attitude. Much of the differentiation in players is their attitude and their football smarts. You cannot pick that up from a highlights reel.

Our picks will hopefully tell us three things.

1 - How the club rate the current crop of talent we have coming through the system (Sheed, Duggan, Lord Nelson, etc)
2 - How much longer some of the older/injured players (Priddis, Le Cras, Kennedy, NicNat, Lycett, etc) have and when we need to start replacing
3 - How Simpson expects the game to evolve in the future and what sort of players we will need to win

As much as I love it when players are immediately best 22, playing in 2017 will not be my benchmark of whether we win the 2016 draft.

Here are some questions you would do well to answer prior to melting at the sort of players we get
. When did we introduce a quarterback HBF
. When did we have a position called defensive forward
. How long have we had an empty half of the ground and how long before the AFL make more rule changes on 2 inside 50 each end
. Who amongst us had thought of the web prior to 2015
. Do you believe Simpson has the coaching ability to be creative and do we know what he has given to O'Brien as a shopping list

Looking forward to Friday. I trust the disastrous drafts are behind us and feeling good taking a good (and full) selection of picks into Friday.

I actually don't think its gone backwards , rather the kids around him have come on and got physically stronger, therefore tackling harder and quicker.

His ball drop and kicking posture is appalling ( he kicks hunched back like Cousins did early in the piece ) you are never going to get any distance or penetration when you do that.
He also never lifts his arms out when he kicks so his kicking action is very stifled.
Now that can be corrected as we did with Cousins.

Plus JG likes the dinky passes and therefore he only EVER raises his eyes when he is within striking distance of jailing a goal.
That screams two things to me:

1. selfish player
2. looking for the easy option.

Neither of theses traits please me.

That said I do admit his good is very good.
Gallucci got told to win more contested ball at the start of this year

Which i might add he showed he can do this and this excites me more than anything about his game he's now a genuine midfielder

Can play inside and outside (still hate these terms) good midfielders do both

His kicking dropped off for this reason but he has shown he can be a good duel sided kick in the past.

He also gets alot of penetration on his kicks when he's on the run have seen him kick a 60 meter goal on the burst and that was last year

My main concern about Gallucci is his attitude he seems to have attitude similar to Goddard of a perfectionist and a bit controlling etc

(Have seen this first hand)

Odds on we overlook Brodie and SPP for Gallucci (or similar lesser known Victorian). There will be a meltdown for about 2-3hrs then we will all convince ourselves that it was a good pick.
So, business as usual then?

Rawlings interview just then, they really dropped the ball by barely focusing on the draft at all.

· What are you after?

o After best talent. Character, ability/attributes. You go for best available, but later may be slightly on needs.

· Biggest hole in the list?

o Added to midfield last few years; redden, jetta, Mitchell. This off-season also added the Vardfather.

o So could be looking for a young tall (fairly sure he said this, small chance was just talking about vardy).

o Vardy will be fine to start preseason day 1.

· Petrie?

o He is in the draft.

o We decided not to add a ruck as a DFA.

o Still feel like we could do with another ruck on our list. Unsure what will be available at our picks in the ND, then could look to the rookie.

o Petrie is in the mix with some others as ruckman.

Steve Buttler is a flog wouldn't even know more than 5 players in the draft poor journalism. No questions at all about who they were looking at. Spent more time talking about his mate Petrie who cares. Its amazing the lack of knowledge the mainstream media has about the draft isnt that part of their job to be aware of what is likely to happen etc.

Trying to get my head around what tall we would be wanting. It could be a young KPP (Cox & Kerr may be around our 2nd pick) and if we go ruck, then would need to go for a Cameron type if we want him to play in 2017 - note Buckenara and others have Cameron inside the 3rd round. Alternatively a late Goddard pick. Goddard would be OK as a 5th in line (NicNat, Lycett, Giles, Vardy).
