It's interesting with English. When Cal Twomey had his podcast where he anonymously interviewed a few club recruiters a lot of them had him in their top handful of players, with some even rating him number one.

On the other hand it could be a bit like a Brodie Grundy like situation where a club would have to have ruck as a top priority and also be willing to take the risk of taking one in the first round, which heavily narrows down the suitors and makes a slide more likely. If we look at the first round, even though we have pick 18 there are actually only 11 clubs who have selections before us which could make it more likely that he could get to us. Just taking a look at those clubs I reckon there's probably only a couple who would might take him, with Freo the most obvious.

Also presumably you probably wouldn't be popping over to Perth for a chat if you thought you were no chance of getting the bloke

I'm hoping we don't take Venables or Rotham. Neither excite me much in a draft where there is a fair bit to be excited about. I'll also be disappointed if we go for Long at 26. That's a big reach IMO. If we get him at 50 I'm fine with it.

Does your man think he will be available at pick 18, seems to have
a lot of interest.
He said he had to cover bases because our pick is low, we don't know who will be picked in front but he did say he's a good prospect. He's got his list and he'll just take whoever he rates highest when it's our turn out of who's left.

The Freo pick and the Sydney pick are the picks which have the
potential to be a bit funky inside the top ten, the others have a
more predictable feel to them in the type of player they will try
and target.

Has the birdie spoken to any WAFL gorillas this year? Any insights into what we're after or what we think we need?

Interested to know if he rates Marshall if he fell to 18. Did he say anything about the kpp's in this draft?
Didn't ask.

Just had a look at English on YouTube. Looks a gun to me. Not many 205cm players have his athleticism and ability to kick the ball as well as him. He looks like a 6'9" midfielder.

I'd be happy to punt on him at 18 if he slips.

I don't see his potential being lived out as a ruckman. If you can have a bloke who's 205cm playing off CHB, or ruck-roving like Mark Blicavs, he's going to have a far larger impact than should he be simply playing ruck/forward. Watching his games in the Champs, his marking in the defensive half is superb, and if that can be paired with a good defensive mindset, he could be an incredibly damaging defender, impossible to beat in the air. At 18, I think everyone would be happy to take a punt on him, but it's still unlikely he slips that far.

Didn't someone say we had talked with Draper?

SAM Draper may look like a ruckman but he has only been playing Aussie rules for eight months.

The 203cm, 105kg big man was a soccer centre-back until last year, lining up for South Adelaide in the Premier League reserves and under-18s.

But Draper switched codes over summer and played three trial games with Reynella Wineflies in February.

South Adelaide asked him to join its SANFL ranks two months later.

The Reynella East College student capped his rapid rise by testing for AFL clubs at the state screening at Wayville last Saturday.

“All my friends at school play footy and I’ve always wanted to play,” Draper, of Old Reynella, said. “I kind of knew how to kick and watched a few games, played at lunchtime and played a couple of knockout school games.

“It was a bit hard at first because I knew the basis of what I was doing right ... but I didn’t know where to go around the ground when I was rucking or where to lead to up forward.

“I started off a bit shaky but the second half of the season, it all just started clicking.”

Draper was born in SA but spent six years of his childhood living in Brede, an English village of about 1700 people, in East Sussex, near Hastings.

He started playing soccer there for Westfield, originally as a goalkeeper.

“I played soccer all my life until this year,” he said.

“But as I got older I realised I was not the right sort of size for soccer.”

Draper is the second-tallest player at the Panthers, behind Peter Steffe (206cm).

In 2014, Draper grew about 12cm.

“I’ve always been pretty tall and one of the tallest in my class at school.”

Draper has spoken to a few AFL clubs ahead of the November 25 national draft.

The right-footer credits his older brother Glenn, who plays football for Reynella, and South under-18 coach Tony Bamford for helping him progress so quickly.

“It’s all been pretty crazy,” he said.

“If you told me last year I’d be doing all this, I wouldn’t believe you.

“(Getting drafted) would be the best thing ever.

“It’d be unreal.”

What would you say distinguishes him for Cordy (Ayce) who was also lauded as having similar attributes?

I'm really not interested in using a first rounder at this stage of our list on an underweight ruckman who will take 6 years to mature.

This is ready to strike now (again).

I'm not sure because I didn't see much of Ayce as a kid.

Having said that, it wasn't football talent that stopped

From what I've seen/heard, they're not really similar at all; they're both athletic but Ayce never had the ball-winning or ground-level prowess that English does, although was a significantly better mark/forward as a junior.

His agility testing was the worst out of anyone at the combine apparently and it may decrease with added weight (see Ayce Cordy). I can't see him working out well as a defender.

His agility is fine. He might have tested poorly, but he moves very well for a ruckman around the ground, not quick but very good at ground level. If you're looking at Cordys, English's agility looks far better than Zaine's, and we see him as a defender.

Can definitely see why we'd be keen on English, seems like the exact type of ruck Bevo would love. Basically a 205cm midfielder who probably isn't even done growing, the guy is an absolute freak. Of course there'd be people on here doing their nut when he's not dominating at AFL level immediately but he's a unique prospect and I'd be delighted to get him at 18.

Don't doubt the bolded bit, like you said he moves well for a ruckman and is very good at ground level. I have nothing against taking English as a ruckman to make things clear. As a key back, I don't think he has the change of direction and he needs to take a few good steps to get going. I think he'll get done on the lead pretty easily.

In regards to Zaine, I've lost the combine testing results from his year to back it up, but I'm near certain he tested better then English. And from just rechecking the vision of them both, I can't agree with what you said. It's not a strength of Zaine's, but it's also nowhere near as bad as what you seem to be making it out to be.

Do we take tim English if he's there at 18 ?

Now I've asked this before and agree that ruckman are no value for 1st round, and I typically don't rate having to many on the list any way.

I was thinking about it today, we do have a very deep list ATM ! the last couple of years we have drafted the likes of Williams Webb Dale lynch smith Collins with Daniel McLean dunkley and cordy already premiership players.

If we were ever going to take a risk, it would be this year.

We have Roughead and Campbell who are both mid 20s and Boyd who will continue to play his ruck/forward role, drafting English gives him time to develop. We can give him 4-5 years no problem, time to work on his forward craft as well.

I'm not say that we should do this, by all means if there is a better option at picking up a 200+ gamer then do it.

What ever happens I hope we get the best combo we can with 18 and 26
seems Del has been listening :)
