So why have FA?

It was introduced as a result of the failure for Collingwood and St Kilda to come to an agreement to trade an out of contract Luke Ball in the 2009 trade period.. St Kilda wouldn't trade him out of spite. Why the had a grudge against him I have no idea but they took an contract offer off the table after the grand final and gave him limited game time during the year and especially in the finals (He had 22 disposals in 46% game time in the grand final). Collingwood offered a fair trade to St Kilda of pick 30 and a player for him, St Kilda said no, he went into the draft and was drafted at pick 30 and St Kilda got nothing.

So to answer why have FA? It stops a club from holding an out of contract player hostage especially in the case where they aren't willing to trade in a rational manner. St Kilda were willing to receive nothing in the off chance they could prevent him from going to his club of choice. This pissed off AFLPA of which Ball was very active in. He was on the AFLPA's board from 2007 and went on to be the president of AFLPA from 2012.

Legally (INAL) a club probably has no rights over an OOC player that would allow then to restrict the players choice of club and AFL would hate for it to be challenged in court as it could result in the end of the draft.

The last paragraph is the most relevant although i agree with your whole post. It was a concession to the aflpa to stop them challenging restraint of trade in court which would have ended trade and draft and had us have an nrl style transfer system.

who you taking at 1 Yoda?

tbh it really is a tough call

On one hand, we could use a running defender that will eventually double up as an inside midfielder.

We lost an abundance of talent and depth in our small defender stocks (Hibberd, Melksham, Dempsey, Morgan was an unsighted draftee) but have since replenished with the introduction of Matt Dea and Pops (thanks guys - he really is a champion bloke) but would still like to add more depth in this area. Kelly, Dea, Bags should be our starting smalls in the back 6 with Tippa, Gleeson and Conor McKenna upgraded as options.

On the other hand, how often does a goal kicking midfielder come about? Start him off a wing where we may need to replace Stanton soon anyways and then have the ability to push him through the midfield rotations properly.

In the same breath, a few of us won't be disappointed if a bid goes unmatched on Will Setterfield.

So why have FA?

Can you imagine a system where there was no draft or zones , a player just chooses there point of destination , where every player signs a 1 year contract and could just move to club of their choice from year to year? Of course not all players would sign a 1 year deal , they would want security but it would seem something like the ultimate destination for the system if we do not have some sort movement restrictions. How much is too much I wonder? How much freedom can the comp absorb? No draft. No restrictions. If some think FA is to liberal , I'd imagine a system like this would really throw them into a tailspin.
The current system is not perfect , there may not be a perfect template but the demands are moving and there current FA is probably just an attempt to meet current expectations.

Was surprised in today's Herald Sun that Kerr was around pick 37, and Brennan Cox wasn't even in the top 50.

Brennan Cox as a KPD with a late pick would be awesome, we can build a back six around him, Kolo and Gardner.

Might need to grab him at 38 if we want him.
Typical Pies think they are in the window...

We can leave him to our third pick no 42 as a minimum, the Pies won't use their 28 and first pick, and their next one is at pick 44, after our third pick 42.

44 and what ever is after that is going to be spent on their two father son picks.

I don't mind Begley.

Not a fan myself but I understand the appeal. I just think a bloke that is 96kg should have dominated the TAC Cup more than he did this year. He went goalless in 6 out of 14 games, and his kicking efficiency was only55%.

I know there's the argument that he pushed into the midfield, but the most possies he had in a game was 22. Think he might be a bust.

Their picks 44 51 etc will be chewed up matching bids on brown and daicos so they will probably have to take him at 28 if they want him (not that i expect him to). Its annoying that we have to deal with all this risk of it when stewart wants to play for geelong not some other club. The sooner they apply the bidding system to vfl players the better.
