Good players don't blame injuries.

Mayne will have the same year his body is getting older and losing his best asset.

An in form Mayne is a great player and if he is fit and firing then it bodes well for us.

Weller has more upside than Mzunga.
Upside doesn't win premierships. Mzungu is more critical to the team right now, despite Wellers stellar cameo yesterday Mzungu was more integral. Weller is already a revelation, but in time will be more important than Mzungu in our best 22.

Now I've read all the posts and I'm amazed that not one word written about IBBO'S performance . The guy dominated every opponent ,took telling marks and generaled the backline just as Elvis did .
My take on the game is this ,we went in with a well balance team and some of the young guys got a taste of AFL reserves football .
So many have stated some nice things about Weller and in most part I agree . His marking is first rate as is his ability to get to contests .He did a great pass to Pavlich but on the members wing he took a screamer of a mark then hacked a short kick straight to a Richmond player .
Spurr captained the team and led by example all day . His kicking today was elite and his courage to come back on after the shoulder needed to be strapped awesome .It was interesting that Pav had a few words to say in the team huddle before the first bounce .
Collins was out of his depth today but you couldn't fault the effort .
So many on here have said some nice things about Tucker and I agree but he did take some time to settle . He was fed the ball quite a bit by our players during the third and last quarters which I found interesting . He is a good kick and he has a big tank .I can see that he is not overawed being out there with senior players and he likes to take the game on .The boy reminds me of Neales first game . He has confidence in his ability and believes he should be out there with the big boys .
Silvagni might has struggled with the windy conditions when the ball was inthe air but his kicking out of defense was first rate .Dawson is fit and firing . He has his closing speed back .
Hannath had a red hot go but Griffin and Sandi are well ahead of him rucking .He will need to make a bigger statement before he is a serious challenger .
Did anyone else notice that RTB was very vocal with the boys at the end of the first quarter .He had his serious face on and made quite a few points to a number of players .
The general skills of all players has improved .What we saw during Preseason with short quick kicks to players in space saw on display in this game . Players willing to block for his team mates was also on display .
The best action of the game though was when Richmond thought they could ruff up Fyfe and get away with it .;)

How can you say Mzungu is more critical to the team when even our own match comittee didn't think he was best 22 for most of last year?

Not really sure what 'upside doesn't win premierships" means. Are you saying experienced mature players do? Did we not try that last year?

Fwiw I would take Mzungu well ahead of De Boer and Suban.

Gu last pre season injured, thus affect his play.can't compare gu with Weller they offer different kind of skill set and match up.

When?

He played 11 games for us and the rest for Peel. Some weeks he didn't play any game becuase he was the teavelling emergency.
Pre season he injure after time trial, did not play a single Nab cup game. So not a good preparation for the whole season, thus affect his play whether for peel or freo he is not his usual self.

He injured himself in a nab challenge match.

Because Freo kept wining Ross made minimal changes. He said in s press conference that Muz got injured at the wrong time and wouldn't drop players from a wining team.

Thanks , getting old memory not that good.

Fair enough, but if I remember correctly Mzu played very well for Peel which was why we were all confused as to why he wasn't getting a game. So his injuries weren't hampering him too badly.

jedi mind tricks you're right. It was the match committee not wanting to make changes to a winning side why Mzu couldn't break in.

Thanks for your honest review!! Hard to get a real feel for all of what goes on when you watch on tv.

The other highlight for me from Weller's game is when he went in and rag dolled a Richmond player after they went after Son-son. May have been Marcon #44?

Showed he is much stronger and willing to stand up for his teammates.

Suban played a role all day making sure he had a strong physical presence (as usual) which was good too. The plus side was we didn't give away unnecessary free kicks either.

This is going to be what most clubs will do to Fyfe this year. They know he has a temper. They'll try to use it.

Good on Neale for sucking in half the Richmond side, too.
They also know he has a dodgy back. He'll be copping it the rest of his career.

The 1st point has been answered already.

The comment I made was in reply to someone stating the obvious - that a 20y/o has more upside than a 29y/o, and in case they were eluding to maybe selecting him over Mzungu on that basis wouldn't solve all our problems.

Is it likely we'll send our youth team down next week ?
WC did it today, aside from seeing how the kids go under pressure I'm not sure what it really achieves for the club....
I like the idea of key players rotating through and doing 'limited time' in NAB games, but not so sure about the tactic of WC today.
I don't think that's Ross's strategy - maybe I'm wrong ?!

Ross has said most of the senior players will head down to play.

Very short term (as long term he Is a mid) he is going to take DeBoers role.

See Weller and Langdon as apprentice to D.Pearce and maybe suban role. Since gu and deboer not a regular best 22 last season. It will take extra ordinary effort from the young kids to get in. Currently Weller play in place of bennell position in nab cup.

Maybe. Depends what the thinking is with Walters. He isn't looking like a permanent forward and Weller can slot in there with Bennell and Walters rotating midfield.
