why don't you do the time trial course yourself and let us know your time. thanks really looking forward to the players times.I went out today and saw the time trial. Quite a lot of the boys sat it out including Nick Robertson and Paps. I timed them all and I'll put them up later (I left my laptop at work, so I might do it tomorrow rather than trying to use my phone). Tom Bell won in 10 flat. Bastinac was second and I think Robinson was third (it might have been Keays). Robinson started in the second group 40 seconds after the first, so I'm not sure until I have another look at my notes.
As a disclaimer, I'm not sure I'd use the times to compare them with other clubs. The course was 1 lap of the back oval and 1 lap of the main oval x 3. I thought it a bit "convenient" that it was EXACTLY one lap of each (ie didn't have to run an extra few metres/pull up a bit short on the last lap to get the exact distance or something like that). I've got a long run scheduled for Wednesday morning, so I might swing by ground and do a lap to measure it.

Hey guys i don't know where to post this but got some inside goss on this rueben williams fellow.
Stories from a guy I work with who goes way back with murray davis.
So apparently young rueben had an issue with his eyesight to the point he was only seeing about 70% all the way through his testing and training. This problem has only been corrected in the past month or so. It was only noticed when doing computer work when murray was working with him he asked if he could see. So rueben hasnt told anyone till recently out of fear he may not make it. Good news for us is contacts have sorted it out and is now seeing 100%. Make of it what you will. But sounds good to me.
Possibly. I myself am losing my eyesight (recently diagnosed kerotoconus) i can vouch for how 70% eyesight effects judgement of incoming pills and and general game play. Hope this sorts him out.Was on the back oval today. Looked like only running but only glanced over there a few times, may be adjusting to contacts?
Nice write up lookagooseGot down for a look today, first time in a couple of years. Got there 15 mins late so didn't realise there were 2 groups. Had 6 year old in toe so caught what i could. Bell came in at 10.01. Bastinac about 10.14ish, then Keays not far behind. Big gaps opened on final lap, Bell & Bastinac were together at around the 2km mark, and surprisingly most guys were reasonably close at that point, bar Mathieson, shows the merits of the extra km because the field was pretty spread on the run home.
Just came to mind Christensen was towards the front at 2km (6-10) but can't recall him finishing, hoping this happened when I was in kid distraction mode but also can't recall him in any drill thereafter. May have put him on ice but not sure why? They did split into 2 groups for full field drills so he may have been up the far end.
First drill was forward 50 entries targeting the corridor from the wing with overlap handball & delivering to leading target or taking a shot. Another was a defensive entry from the wing which needed to be turned over and sent back forward. There were a few more which I'm trying to recall the details of. It was raining so there were a few passages of a slippery pill but they did adjust & the skills were pretty clean through most drills bar a few "soapy moments" which did cause the verbal ire of a few players.
One thing I was happy to see is the whistle blow at the end of the drill & seeing the players sprint back to the huddle, last place doing push ups & the huddle counting. Not sure if it's already happened but good to see some good old fashioned training habits coming into play.
Josh Schache, not so much what I saw but what I heard. (Although what I saw was pretty impressive) Well they're hoping for 10 games next year but who knows? Massive wraps, main being his straight walk kicking for goal for a left footer. Most swing out to left but apparently Matthew Lloyd has worked with him a fair amount as junior. Body shape likened to Carey, low hips so helps below the knees. Has the attributes, if he can keep working hard will be a star. Kicking for goal is one of the most relaxed actions I've seen. J Brown like as in the leg never seems to straighten to get the distance.
Close is a hard trainer, can see why he got most professional, always 100%, just needs to tidy up skills a little. Seems the key forwards were encouraged to go back and kick for goal when full field drills ended (while another transition started). Mostly the boys ran the ball back after the forward 50 entry. Pretty sure Close, Schache, Freeman (?) & Walker the main culprits.
One small drill as I was leaving has me convinced Mcstay definitely training back, along with Merrett, Mayes, C Beams, Andrews, Harwood & a few others swapping roles, only small group of dozen or so.
Sure I've missed a fair bit. Any questions just shoot.

Some of those times a little surprising? So here's he results from the time trial. As I mentioned yesterday I wouldn't be 100% confident that it was EXACTLY 3km, but obviously it would have been pretty close. With that in mind, the results probably give a better indication of players fitness relative to each other, rather than to players from other clubs.
Overall less than half the list took part and as a couple of people have mentioned Christensen didn't finish (but he was going quite well for the first couple of km's - near Clayton and C Beams), so it probably leaves a few unanswered questions in terms of our fitness, but generally speaking outside the top few the times were a bit slower than I would have expected. Alas....
1. Bell 10:00
2. Bastinac 10:14
3. Keays 10:26
4. Close 10:35
5. Robinson 10:45
6. Clayton 10:46
7. C Beams 10:52
8. Lester 10:58
9. Andrews 11:00
10. Hipwood 11:05
11. Schache 11:07
12. Mayes 11:13
13. Taylor 11:16
14. Cutler 11:18
15. McStay 11:19
16. Rockliff 11:26
17. Green 11:27
18. Harwood 11:47
19. Clarke 12:04
20. Mathieson 12:05
21. Smith 12:12
I can certainly see why Mathieson didn't get drafted as a high as expected with those results, but you only have to look a few spots up the list to see Rockliff isn't exactly the greatest runner either and it doesn't stop him. I think if you're a smart player and natural footballer, you can overcome these limitations by knowing when and where to run to and when not to, go rather than running around like a headless chook tiring yourself out. And as someone said, in all the game play type drills he doesn't seem to struggle keeping up. And finally, he will obviously improve that result with another couple of years in the system, so while it may effect him a bit this year, I doubt it would be a long term issue.
Some of those times a little surprising?
Especially Mayes, Taylor and Cutler.
Surely not pushing as hard as they could?
If the players aren't pushing themselves as hard as they can then how can any real guide to a players fitness level really be established?
Pretty sure Damien Austin suggested using the 3k over the 2k gave a better indication of endurance.
If those times were to be legit ( I doubt they are) there is work to be done.

Can't find any info on those players' previous results, so it's very hard to say re: their results versus effort.
It just seems a little odd to me that the gap from the top couple to the middle is a tad over a minute! That's a long way on a run.Just having a quick look neither Mayes or Taylor ran the 3km at their Combine. Cutler did and ran a 11.00.
From this year Keays also ran a 10.09.
They were all pushing hard and the timing was accurate. But as I said yesterday, I'm a bit dubious on the length of the course as it was exactly 3 laps of each oval (surely they'd have to add or subtract a bit of distance on the last lap to get a precise 3km). I'm hoping to go down tomorrow and run it myself to measure it.Some of those times a little surprising?

Yeah, you're right. It was essentially a cross country course (minus the hills) and while it was not raining at the time it was damp under foot. Also joggers aren't great on grass for running as far as speed goes. So that would definitely impacted times a bit, but not drastically.I am no runner but would the wet weather have an impact? Heavier, sludgier ground and wet clothes would have an impact surely? Was it raining during the time trial? Was raining all day here in the city.
